That Double Fine charm is here. Spacebase DF 9 is more demanding than I thought. I died once, seeing them all go limp in space was disheartening. This is my first time at this kind of game. But I'm getting better. Need to start prioritising life support, then airlock room, then refinery for mining. Has anyone got a better plan?

Thats pretty much how it needs to be played atm. Just you wait until you get to the parts that are actually meant to kill you :p

The reason I wanted to revisit mini golf was that I've always been a fan of the original but the dated controls and graphics meant I hadn't wanted to play it a long time. I always liked the calming tranquil nature of the original and the by any means possible way of getting to the hole, this is something we've tried to capture in Vertiginous Golf.

We've currently completed only 9 holes but will continue to add more as the game grows and hopefully the community will get involved, with everything going according to plan we intend to have lots of courses of holes available to play with varying play/visual styles.

The game plays great as a 4 player local multiplayer party game, this is something we really would like to improve on, potentially adding online multiplayer should there eventually be enough players, in my humble opinion theres nothing worse than small indie games with empty rooms and lobbies,

When he says "the original", I assume he means Sierra's 3D Ultra Mini-Golf, right? Because, well, "calming" and "tranquil" aren't really words I'd associate with its courses, given how zany they all were.

Tetrobot and Co's real good you guys. It is fairly hardcore logic puzzler, even more so then Blocks that Matter but if you like the brain teasers then I would recommend it.
 
How is Double Fine INDIE?

Because they're not owned by another company. Of course, by this definition, Epic are indie too and this whole semantics debate starts where indie must be based on size of team, lack of publisher funding, small budget, etc.

I don't mind the difficulty at all, but I'm not particularly fond of tiresome menu navigation, micro-micro-management that's necessary to accomplish basic goals and so on. I'm totally fine with SRPG-like mechanics and streamlined games like Civ, FTL, Endless Space, Prison Architect and such.

Would I be able to enjoy this?

I'm a noob to these kind of games, but there are keyboard shortcuts for every action although I do think the menus look pretty nifty. You have to care about people's mood and their unmet needs, so like building bedrooms or a bar is good to keep them going.
 
If you enjoy challenging puzzles that don't hold your hand, I'd highly recommend LogiGun. It's really deserves more attention that it got and the thing is, the reviews it did get were excellent. It rated 9.1 on Desura too. I really enjoyed the game

Yes, LogiGun features a woman solving a series of increasingly difficult puzzles. Yes, you use a special gun (four, actually) to solve those puzzles. Yes, there's an AI presense that occasionally taunts you. But don't overlook LogiGun because it has some Portal inspirations. LogiGun has its own style and will test your brain with its own gauntlet of varied challenging puzzles.

LogiGun doesn't reveal its hand all at once. The tutorial rooms ease you in with some switches and pressure-activated buttons and blocks, introducing you to the guns you'll wield throughout the game. Your character has quite arsenal of puzzle solving tools: a wrist mounted electronic zapper, a grapple hook gun, a gun that creates a pair of platforms to jump on, a gravity gun that can attract or repel objects, and a flame-tipped crossbow that can activate switches and arc around corners. Certain factors limit your use of the tools and add complexity to the conundrums; for example, the platform gun can only be used while on solid ground, which forces you to preemptively think about their placement.

LogiGun takes these elements and tools and throws a wide range of puzzles your way, requiring you to use these guns' functions in inventive ways. Explosives, barriers that only allow certain objects to pass through, gas that restricts platforms, and more build upon the already complex challenges. Furthermore, the game only offers the slightest hints to guide you. Gamers who enjoy figuring out solutions for themselves without handholding will feel right at home with LogiGun.

There are some flaws. It can become cumbersome to switch between your various gadgets and the jumping is floaty, but thankfully the game's emphasis is on the puzzles, not difficult platforming. LogiGun's clean visuals round out the package, with smooth animations and atmospheric lighting that give the game a unique look.

LogiGun is a quality puzzle platformer that puts the emphasis on brain-teasing challenges.

Its not a particularly hard game atm, but that also comes from the fact that there isnt overly much to do yet. For the full price, I'd definitely recommend to wait, but if you can get it for cheaper it should be an interesting ride to see where they take it. You shouldnt expect a full game here already and if you are willing to start it up every month or so for shorter sessions to see the improvements, you should be able to enjoy it. And the menu navigation is as painless as it could possibly get for this kind of game. Prison architect is waaaay deeper and more intricate to play.

How far did you play it? If I am not mistaking it for a different game, I was underwhelmed by the actual puzzles which felt like I've already seen them a million times in other games.

Idk, maybe I've played less puzzle games than you. but I felt the game had nice variety the whole way through. Then again I really enjoy 2D puzzle platformers.

1) Not close to top 100. Visits to the page have died off. Though I'm neither surprised nor worried, it should pick up again once I launch a proper marketing campaign/Kickstarter.

When it comes out on PC in November, you have to check out Type:Rider. It's on IOS now, but there are some crashes and framerate issues. And I think it would control better with a keyboard

The actual platforming isn't anything special, but the level design and the way they create varied and inventive obstacles from typographical history and different fonts is so good. I'm up to Futura and so far the whole game has been an atmospheric visual treat

So I've come to learn that the best path to exposure for blogs is through Reddit. The articles that I don't share on Reddit might get views in the range from 10 to maybe 60+. An article link on Reddit...the article easily gets 100 or 200 views.

I never actually tried that. One very old story got picked up by reddit about Dark Souls on pc and how it was shit after we played a pre-release at gamescom a couple of years ago. They haaaated that story but it gave us loads of views.

In other news thanks to More_Badass for Shelter! I've got an interview coming about the trials and tribulations of greenlight (and missing it AGAIN today) and some stuff about Fakteur.

Also I picked up Spacebase - I really love how it's "simplified" compared to stuff like DF and Gnomoria - I simply couldn't wrap my head around that shit. Still feels a little thin, though given it's early access I'm not upset by that. I had one dude erupt, Alien style, before his parasite killed two of my crew while they were playing on their handheld games :( probably Vitas as well...

Also Rimworld looks INSANE - never heard of it until the greenlight today. Damn.

Thought I'd put Fakteur up now. Why not, only 20 to midnight after all. Might even post it on reddit! It's a bit stupid, but I didn't feel there would be enough to say in a traditional sense about the game.

Is this the thread for impressions? Is there going to be an |OT| or is this it?

I'm really liking it, even though I'm new to these kind of games. The menus are slick, and I like just using the keyboard shortcuts. I realised you have to keep rooms separate, as beds can only be in a designated residence area. Also, don't put doors near airlock rooms because for some reason then workers don't get back to mining.

The Double Fine charm is here in the writing and character interactions.

The Spaceface is a brilliant idea.

Amazing GIF's as always and watching it gives me the urge to buy the game right now, too bad I'm a bit short on money and knowing my tastes I think it's better to wait at least a beta version.
 
Another game I've only played for a few minutes but can already recommend: Valdis Story Abyssal City

Lovely graphics, tons of choice and customization in the combat, challenging gameplay. It's really good

I'll 2nd this. The gameplay isn't really anything special although it does keep altering the rules enough to keep it engaging throughout. But the fantastical dreamscape letter worlds you roll through are very imaginative and well worth experiencing.

I'm about halfway through that book but I quit midstage so I can't remember the exact number of levels, I think I was on this space invader bit just before I stopped playing last. Fun though, the only low point was that bloody level with the minecart and gun combo. Glad that was a one off.

On review scores and ratings:
As a gamer, I share the same inclinations as others, that need to race to the bottom of a review of that highly anticipated game from your favorite site and check the score. I'm proud when a game gets the score it deserves and frustrated when a reviewer doesn't see the inherent greatness and rates a game poorly.

But now as a reviewer, I'm found that I can't and won't score a game. Over these few months and in hindsight of other occurrences in the gaming hemisphere, I've come to the conclusion that applying a score, a rating, just does a disservice to the product. A game isn't a singular entity, but myriad variables working in sync to deliver an experience. How can a single number or ranking possibly represent the entire spectrum of that experience, from the wonderful highs to its frustrating lows and every aspect in between? Truth is, it can't

When I first started this blog, I considered scoring these games. But I found that once you start down that path, you're no longer considering the game in terms of the experience, but within those self-imposed boundaries. What separates a 7 from an 8, or 9 from 10, or the 9.5 from a 9.75?

Consider games like Alpha Protocol or Fallout New Vegas, both which were riddled with technical issues upon release. In that decisive moment, how do you weigh the pros and the cons?
