NPD Sales Results for September 2013 [Up2: Console positioning, 360 estimate]

3DS with no notable release this month outsold home consoles that had GTAV, did not expect that to be honest.

Obviously those AR Card games have been system sellers this whole time (come to think of it, I haven't even opened the AR Card pack yet).

Oh and you can count me in regarding people being personally invested in Sony
(nope, I don't have a PlayStation but you can bet I count on my Sony clock radio to wake me up every morning.)

The price cut was so pointless given SCEA didn't bother telling anyone about it. Of course that shouldn't be a surprise given they haven't run a single TV ad for the platform this entire year.

they might be saving it for the new colors. maybe.

Woah, Sony finally broke Microsoft's near 3 year streak.

Impressive stuff. Seems that GTA ad push worked out great for them, shame it came at the expense of Puppeteer. Yeah, I'm bitter that Sony sent that out to die...
Don't worry. Next month we can watch rain (digital anyway) and Beyond (which got marketing) not charting as well. Sony really had a bad year so far in terms of sales except for TLoU despite putting out more games than ever.

Nintendo is going to do exceedingly well this holiday season with 3DS and 2DS. They should be in pretty good shape.

Hopefully Wii U sales will continue to climb. They may dip a little this month but November and December will really be the months to watch out for. Hoping for some positive numbers.

Congratz to Sony and PS3 for finally breaking the 360s streak!
Hopefully Sony does big AAA hardware bundles from now on.

So a remake of Kingdom Hearts outsold a remake of Zelda. That's pretty damning for Nintendo.

As I said in the prediction thread, the PS3 outselling the 360 this month, even with the bundles, is terrible news for the Xbox brand going forward in the US. Looking at MS' bundle offerings for the holidays, it's sad that $199-$349 is STILL the price barrier of entry on an 8 year old piece of hardware. A PS4 is only $50 more than the best 360 bundle. That's nuts.

Great sales for Diablo 3 and GTA 5 of course. Surprised that 2k is behind Madden, but I imagine both will get a bump when the new consoles release, moreso on the 2k side.

Edit: And at least people are finally understanding that 3rd party games have always been the biggest system sellers for PS360.

Sony has realistic expectations for titles like Beyond and Puppeteer. They're not looking to move hundreds of thousands of consoles with those, or save the platform (as nintendo is trying to do with TW101).

These titles serve to broaden their catalogue of original IP, see what works and what doesn't, generate some buzz, but they're not system sellers.

Retail Zelda only had 2 days of tracking. The digital release was earlier, but that's not counted.

I made the same mistake, maybe it should be added to the OP so there aren't trolls when/if the specific number gets said. (not calling you a troll, again I made the same mistake).

4 days of sales for 2k14 vs a month for madden, not really surprising. not to mention nba season isn't even close to starting yet.

Given Heavy Rain's success, it's hard to know what to expect for Beyond.

Yay Wii U is at least at 90,000. Much, much bettet than the shithole it was in before.

Good to see 3DS' 5-month winning streak going.

Sony should shell out for AAA bundles more often.

Pleasantly surprised by the 200% increase for Wii U considering the price drop went into effect on the 20th. :D

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
I think one minor key for Wii U in November/December is getting the Wii off the damn shelf. I still maintain that had an impact during launch last year.

So, the Xbox 360 streak came to an end? How many months did it last, like 30 months? That is some streak :)

I was surprised that it survived the Wii U launch. I'd be willing to bet that PS3 and 360 will continue to dominate the Wii U this holiday season in addition to Xbox One and PS4 leaving it in the dust.

Problem here is that retailers have already taken the Wii U off the shelf to make room for the next gen consoles. I wish that was a joke, but it isn't.

It has yet to reach 4m with each title yet. Apologies if I'm wrong.

I don't see by being a launch title alone justifies it reaching 4m

It does, trust me - obviously the only way to prove it is to wait for the release. And now with WatchDogs and possibly Driveclub delayed, the chances of those numbers are even higher.

Wind Waker HD launched in NA on October 4th. It wasn't tracked in this NPD at all. Nothing. Zilch.

The 3DS keeping the lead was a bit of a surprise.

Given Heavy Rain's success, it's hard to know what to expect for Beyond.

Heavy rain exceeded EVERYONE'S expectations, but was a bit of a slow burner. No one had that title pegged at 3 million. you would have been laughed out of GAF for suggesting it.

Beyond likely has a higher target than HR, but nowhere near 3 million.

3DS winning is pretty amazing. Really surprised by that.

Also, shocked and extremely happy Kingdom Hearts was that high. Can't wait for 2.5.

32 months of first place console finishes is something I never, ever thought I'd see Microsoft be able to do.

Kudos to the 360 team.

Aren't most of the sales going to be in the first 48 hours + bundles?

NPD gave us a combined retail + bundle units for MGS 4 back in the day, maybe they'd drop a hint later on (or we wait on CS).

Most of the sales will likely be from the bundle. But the bundle includes a digital copy, while MGS4 was probably physical, so I'm not sure NPD would track that at all.

Systems launching in November are usually going to be too supply constrained to come in first against the kind of sales other consoles get during the holidays.

If PS3 wins October, it will be Playstation domination from then onwards with the PS4 rolling out.
I didn't see this coming, not at all, goddamn.

Price drop and Killzone gone. I guess Tearaway and Vita TV are the two remaining spots for the holdout Vita Turnaround True Believers to move the goalposts.

No.....

Again, Zelda launched this month. The Wii U Zelda BUNDLE launched last month. And that bundle included a digital copy of Zelda. The retail copy of Zelda didn't launch until Oct 4.

EDIT: Since NPD doesn't track digital sales, the digital September release doesn't matter. All that matters is the Oct 4th retail release.

I was surprised because of Nintendo's own projections for it. I assumed they'd hit those numbers. I don't believe the Wii U has ever been supply constrained.

Now that I think about it, Nintendo has to be ecstatic with 3DS right now. Looks like it's finally coming into its own and the next few months are going to be gigantic with Pokemon.
