Here is how replacing your HDD on PS4 works (ComputerBild)

HDD the same size as in PS3, right? 2.5" SATA? Thinking of bunging a huge HDD in on day one

Same width as the PS3, but the PS3 can only take 9.5mm drives. The PS4 would appear to take 12.5mm drives so you can drop a 2TB drive in if you want.

It says MAXIMUM of 12.5mm. That doesn't at all imply that ONLY 12.5mm fits. In almost everywhere that 12.5mm is allowed, 9.5mm still works fine.

Any smaller drive will fit in any bigger drive slot as the connector and screws are always at the same place. The maximum drive height for the PS4 seems to be 12,5mm.

They just updated with HDD info... anyone can translate?

This is google's

As there are more questions about the hard drive was, here are a few details: The PS4 a HGST (Western Digtal) inserted 2.5-inch drive with 500 gigabytes of memory and 5,400 rpm. Important info for all hobbyists: It will only plates with a maximum height of 12.5 millimeters in the case.

Is this a confirmation of 12,5mm and thus 3TB drives?

No. This is for 2.5" 12.5mm drives, they come in smaller storage sizes. 1.5TB is already very expensive, and 2TB [which are 12.5mm in height] are REALLY pricey [more than console].

1,5 TB is very affordable even at a standard 9,5mm height. The HGST Travelstar 5K1500 is available at around $120.

1.5TB drives aren't really expensive here (59€/TB vs. 55€/TB for 1TB drives).

If you're ordering for launch, it's probably safer to just go with a standard 9,5mm 1,5TB drive - who knows whether the final unit will have enough space for bigger drives (although it seems likely to be the same) as 2TB isn't yet available in that format anyway.

ok then, "breathing space" - I'm just saying I wouldn't assume 12.5mm is ok, it might get overheated and shorten the life of the HDD

I really doubt those 3mm of empty space would make any temp difference at all. They also wouldn't put a 12.5mm bracket in there if these drives would cause problems.

sorry, I assumed the translation meant the gap was 12.5mm rather than bracket "maximum height of 12.5mm in the case" but you're probably right

That is where you add more GDDR5 memory via a empty expansion slot!. ;)

Can't wait to finally see inside the main box :) I imagine they're having problems cracking the inter-dimensional barrier though around the main hardware; I've seen sci-fi movies, & folding space is the only logical explanation for the size of the thing.

I'm starting to have doubts about whether they'll really disassemble the console :/

That would be the best security screw ever if it didn't have the phillips driver bits in the middle of it. Triwing can be fudged sloppily, but the PS screw would be impenetrable.
