I have supped on fine thread tonight. Never shall I eat so well as during a console war. Thread is still delivering after almost 60 pages. Wish I had been here for early 360/PS3.

To be completely honest I like albert a lot. I think he is a good poster. I follow him on twitter. As far as microsoft's messaging has gone this year albert has been good while the rest of the company fell off a cliff.

That said... what he just posted is walking around the issue. Like I said a bunch of times... this rumor has been reaaaaaaaaaaal flimsy. After this I'm feeling pretty confident.

I agree with albert that the actual numbers don't mean shit. If they can make it 720p and upscale it and it looks as good as the ps4 version... who gives a shit. It will all be the same. But this thread isn't about that. This thread is about what the resolution is. If it's 720p it's 720p. It's not "really good looking 720p" because that's not something that exists. It's just the number. The number is all this thread is about.

He says he doesn't know - which is either a lie or he shouldn't be working in the xbox division. And then he strawmans down to other issues involved in how it looks.

The rumor wasn't "CoD looks way shittier on the xbox." It was merely about the resolution. All of that said, I'm certain talk of the resolution is under the NDA so albert couldn't talk about it - specifically- if he wanted to. But him saying he doesn't know what it is.... really?

Come on.

My major qualm with not knowing is that, as a major partner that's helping launch the platform, Microsoft should have the finger on the pulse of what exactly is going on with the dev process.

Either it's 720p, or they are oblivious to something that to me seems pretty damn important to keep tabs on.

Either way, it doesn't reflect well on the console IMO and its relationship with devs IMO.

I don't think Activision is going to jeopardize a few hundred-thousand CoD:G/XB1 Pre-orders by telling everyone that the XB1 version is inferior - not until after the orders start processing anyway...

Not too mention that switching from the XB1 version to the PS4 is impossible now since there are no more PS4 consoles left to Pre-Order. You got three options basically:

1. Stick with it, despite it's unconfirmed inferiority
2. Cancel it out right and don't look back
3. Cancel and just get the PC version

Activision will make sure it holds its cards close to it's vest if it's bluffing with 720p cards, to prevent Pre-Order cancellations. Because if it's not bluffing, the 1080p cards would already be on the table.

Question: Have the Next-Gen versions gone GOLD yet? If so, then what's the resolutions? Can't fiddle screen resolution after it's gold, can you?

You're assuming the average consumer actually cares about this. They don't. All they care about is that it's the new COD. It'll still break a Billion regardless of the resolution. This news is devastating only to console warriors.

I don't see how anyone could honestly say there is no visual difference between 720p and 1080p.

You have 1280x720 vs. 1920 x 1080

720p = 921,000 pixels
1080p = 2,000,000 pixels

You have 2x the amount of extra pixels on screen to produce a clearer, sharper, more detailed image and people really want to say there is no visual difference? WTF!

720p allows you the extra power because the GPU has 2x fewer pixels to render to on the screen. So really, if the PS4 is pushing 1080p in 90% of its launch titles, that is a 2x power difference right there compared to the torrent of 720p titles on the X1. God knows what type of AA and effects differences we will see between the X1 / PS4 as time goes along, but it is pretty telling that the best game graphically for the X1 is Ryse, which is generally void of anything outside of blood splatters and some sparks.

Has there been a generation yet where one system is so far ahead of the competitor consoles? Playstation vs. N64? PS2 vs. Xbox vs. Gamecube?

Maybe the best comparison would be Dreamcast vs. Competition ? I dunno ...

when cheapy d is on twitter in full defense force ,in that precise moment i realize the xbox one is 720p

always bet on cheapy d being wrong..you will never fail

I never knew that until I casually tuned in into one of his podcasts. OMG it was cringe worthy and shut it off mere seconds later.

Holy fuck the thread has over 222,000 views since 4 PM EST today.

In 7 hours we got 5 baseball stadiums full of viewers

Depends if that number is unique viewers or total number of views. It may only be 5,000 people hitting refresh over and over. I know most of us here have done just that.

What do you suggest he does? Honest question. It's easy for me to ridicule his crazy spin but I'm anonymous on the internet. Tomorrow I will wake up and go to work. Odd as it is this dude is at work. He says he's not but he knows he is. He can't hide behind a funny name and "secret sources" (get it? Meh.) we already know who he is. The shit is probably 720p and there's not much he can do. Probably can't even ignore it because, like I said he's at work. This is part of what he does. Wow, just realized how fucked up that job is! 8 years of this, my God lol.

Stop posting.

720p upscaled vs 1080p native should be pretty obvious on a large 1080p TV...?

If someone has seen both running, then it should be readily apparent if they are at different resolutions.

Yeah man it's more than twice the pixels. That's a huge gap. I sit about 8 feet from a 60" tv. Id love to be able to do a side by side

Ok, so it's 720p.

There's no way in hell that you saw it running and couldn't tell the resolution. And you know that seeing the game running vs watching videos online isn't in the same league.

The upscaler you put in is very good, I'm sure. Also, don't send anyone out to kill me. Thanks.

then again, people will judge the version based on a single number, so "who gives a shit" about the better-looking version is nowhere near out of the window. it is perfectly possible that some people out there are going to base their decisions on the difference of resolutions alone.

people like to blame the "messaging", or the pr a lot, which is unfair. pr can only do so much. how can anyone have sold a product with always-online and no-used games? how about being $100 more expensive yet having an inferior hardware spec?

pr didn't decide on those things. it's the business and technical divisions that did, so to blame a lot of what went wrong with the xbone to the "messaging" and pr is quite unfair, at least in EmptySpace's view.

We're weeks from release, I don't see the point in holding anything back at this stage. Better get the news out there and deal with any fallout.

When I see news like this all I can think is this is the first time in two gens I WON'T be buying an Xbox at launch, and as it gets closer not an ounce of doubt has grown.

I agree with everything you say. It's my job to cut through PR's bullshit.

And by my job I mean hobby. But I want it to be a job. I don't think I have many prospects at Microsoft though.

Was not expecting to see a thread blow up this much this late. Generally news comes early in the day. I knew something was up when Microsoft has not been pushing COD footage like crazy (like they normally do). Then there was IGN demoing the PS4 version for all their videos.... which was odd. Even if this is not true about 720p, I'm still curious why IGN/Microsoft are not pushing the Xbox One version.

No way. He's been accurate quite a bit. He came clean with his statement that it was kind of an iffy rumor. He correctly confirmed the Driveclub delay a few days ago.

I don't think it would do GAF or anyone justice if he was permabanned.

...besides. This thread has been one hell of a ride. I can't count the number of times I've laughed just reading this thread today.

I agree. I was not being serious. The dude brings the goods half the time.

I think mr mortimer should be banned for life if it isn't 720p.

Guys, give Albert a break. I mean what else is he supposed to say? I'm sure it will be good enough for many more casual gamers who don't scrutinize graphics so much.

You have my respect.

some nice stuff, then one mean thing.

Look, I get some people claim such amazing eyesight as to be able to instantly distinguish native vs. upscaled when you're in a room watching and enjoying a game demo, despite the fact that it requires normal people access to a direct feed screenshot with very particular sections zoomed up 8x to pixel count, while also making sure you're accounting for other intentional environmental effects that may blur or otherwise impact the image.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=680289&highlight=pixel+counting

But hey, if you're saying you can tell the difference with enough accuracy to make a public disclosure about it, just by watching someone play the game, then I say wow.

I've seen a bunch of other 3rd party games running at various times, and I can't tell you the *native* resolutions of those either.

So me, I'm not making that claim. I'm sorry if you think that's a job requirement.

I personally can't tell the difference between 720p/1080p unless I'm given a side by side comparison. Personally once a game is in front of me and running I can cope with any resolution. Bad or unstable framerates and tearing do bother me a lot though.

But this 1080p/720p revelation (if true) is going to do a lot for perception of the two machines in like for like comparisons.

The first year or two of performance comparisons (eg like digital foundry) are going to make for very interesting viewing.

I think this is about more than CoD though. It's our first real glimpse (if true) at One versus PS4 in regard to performance. Hence everybody going batshit insane.
