AC4: First review

Yes! Can't wait -- it looks incredible.

I've found that I'm one of the biggest AC fans, but I don't really enjoy playing them that much. But I just absolutely love the art-design, some of the best character artists in the industry and some of the beauty they are able to achieve with their environments (and highly modular). Plus they are gods of animation/mocap.

You forgot the boring repetitive gameplay in AC1

the main assassinations themselves were great. it's too bad the requirements to progress the story were repetitive.

the Desmond sections in AC1 were pretty damn cool for the time. Gave me LOST vibes and this was when LOST was still on.

I'm going to remain a little reserved when it comes to the AC series because the last one was a huge disappointment for me like many others. Not buying this one for a while. Best one was AC II.

Definitely, in fact it remains one of my favourite single-player games of the generation. I'm trading in every Assassin's Creed except that one. Still have fond memories of the carnivale :)

I felt burned on AC3. I have a huge list of complaints about the game which aren't really relevant here. Honestly, I'm extremely excited about AC4. Edward looks to be a much more interesting character than Connor, the environments actually look interesting as well. I particularly liked that during one interview Ashraf Ismail said that one of the cities was directly inspired by the cities of ACII, which of course had the best cities to date. The slowing down of combat is good, the improvements to the already great naval system and the fixing of an over-complicated economy system are also welcome. It doesn't seem they've really address the fundamental flaws of the combat system, namely that it's far, far too easy to just massacre vast swathes of enemies and that it isn't even a very stealthy game. But I'm still very excited because, let's face it, you know what you're getting yourself into in terms of combat when you buy an AC game at this point, and you don't buy it for the combat, you buy it for the many other points about the games that are strong (bar AC3 which was a failure)

Hopefully it means researching, plotting and planning assassinations like in AC1. You don't need to do it 7 times like AC1, but would it have killed to include a few actual assassination plots in the last four games?

You're romanticizing the hell out of AC1. The 'plotting and planning' was going up to Malik to get another fetch quest and bring it back to him to 'unlock' the assassination.

The thing that frustrated me the most about Assassins Creed is that it encouraged stealth gameplay but none of the assassinations could actually be performed stealthily. You should have been able to steal guards uniforms or after clearing the rooftops of guards (again stealthily to avoid alarms) and then assassinate them from long distance. Or at least choose where and how to take out victims, not during the brief window the game gave you. There was not enough choice in how to go about the missions.

AssCreed was no Rainbow Six, but the investigation system did leave the matter of how best to use the information gained -- if at all -- to the player, which are elements Ubi abandoned with 2 as it moved the series towards a more traditional action-adventure experience. As I like to say, to this day I still most prefer the original game overall due it succeeding the most at making the player feel like an actual assassin (though I will echo the comments that 2 has the best locations of the series thus far, particularly Florence and Venice -- 3 takes the cake for the worst).

The GTA assassination missions did a better job of 'assassinating' people, and they didn't require patience that most gamers don't have.

That said, I'm not expecting it from AC4 because nothing about it looks like an Assassin game.

Well, there is nothing about the last five AC games (incl. ACIV) to make them look like an assassin games. Only first AC was about the assassins, about their order and stuff like that (not the best realisation of medieval-like Hitman game in my oppinion but still, a lot better than in other AC games), the rest of them is shitty Santa Barbara. The best words that can describe all of the problems which at least the last four AC games has is - creative impotence in terms of core gameplay, open world and all the stuff related to it.

The whole point of AC2 was inheriting the assassin mantra from your father. The whole point of Brotherhood was building the Assassins. If anything I'd say they did a better job of making it about 'the assassins' than AC1 where you were basically just a cog in the wheel until the end.

I can speak to the soundtrack, which is up on Amazon for $6, and it is absolutely amazing. It is right up there with ACII in terms of quality. It's a bit different of a sound, but it is just as good in it's own right.

I'm with you 100%. The idea of completing tasks to find out small stuff that'll help you with the actual assasination in combination with the completely free way of how to handle it was what made AC1 great to me, too. Abandoned the series after 30% of AC2, 'cause it was basically CoD in old ages.

I just hope crafting actually MEANS something. In ac3, it did jack squat, You could craft to...sell barrels...for money that you didnt need.

You could go the whole game with your blades, no reason to get new weapons.
