I cannot believe the number of people across the mainstream sites, forums, twitter and GAF that are arguing that the 720/1080 difference is marginal.

Put aside the fact that there is a difference, and it is noticeable.

Why are so many people ready to just take whatever Microsoft hands out? I mean, you're the consumer. You're paying $500+. You bought a 1080p screen to enjoy high definition. It's 2013, on the brink of 2014 - and Microsoft are trying to sell you a console that renders at a slightly higher resolution than the gen that started 8 years ago.

Grow a pair - voice some concerns, if for no other reason than to tell them that it's not good enough. Regardless of your thoughts on the end result of resolution differences - be pro-consumer and make them aware that releasing an underpowered console at a higher price deserves ridicule.

I think the problem is with you.

I watch low rez streams of TV shows on my HD TV and have, literally zero desire to find a higher rez stream. The quality doesn't bother me in the slightest.

On the other hand I have a few friends who won't watch something unless it is at least 720p. They'll wait or give it a miss completely.

You have to accept the fact that there is a significant chunk of people who really don't care.

I know I've read people say that the experience on XBL would be far better than on PSN because of dedicated servers, and for that reason they'd stick with the XB1 over PS4.

Dedicated servers were a GAME CHANGER in them console warzzz!!!

Until they weren't.

dear lord...in the past few days/week i've found out that a significant amount of people don't really know what "upscaling" means. hint: it doesn't mean up-res'ing.

Sry but your post read like a rebuttal to a statement made but that's obviously not the case. You set yourself up to win an argument that no one in this thread was making.

Wasn't my intent. I was simply pointing out one of the many glaring logical failures of the Xbox console warrior.

Chat transcript:

LH: Hey Albert, is snap working yet?
AP: Nope.
LH: Uh oh. How about game switching?
AP: That's still fucked.
LH: Oh. What about Game DVR?
AP: Dunno, I don't have a Live Gold sub.

lol, I was about to post something similar.

You have to accept the fact that there is a significant chunk of people who really don't care.

And those people won't be buying a $500 console at launch. People who don't care will still be happily playing games on their 360's and PS3's for the foreseeable future.

I LOL'd. There were actual tears.

Even Chris Charla (the Adam Boyes of MS) wanted to get in on this little chat.

@iocat
@majornelson @albertpenello And how freaking quiet it is!

Yep, just here to piss you off, Mobius.

You stated that people probably won't notice, echoing the other such nonsensical posts in this thread. And that somehow the argument is different when talking about upscaled vs native res. I am arguing that you, and other posters saying such things, are wrong. A difference exists. It is noticeable without using special equipment to anyone who cares to look. It matters. Especially to the consumers of these new devices. I'm not sure how you are defining the average consumer for these products. I would like clarification, because in my opinion you've made bad assumptions.

I am not applying all of the statements in my earlier post to you, only the resolution bit. Sorry if that's how you took it.

Feel free to carry on without arguing with me, if you don't like what I'm saying.

I am sure most gamers know what 720 and 1080 mean. But most probably couldn't really identify the differences. There are some serious people here that know what kind of AA is used just looking at cropped images.

TAJ

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
And games will be upscaled to 1080p. They probably won't notice that it isn't native resolution 1080p they will just notice it fills their entire 1080p screen.

I think this basic fact is something that people seem to keep forgetting. The discussion is not 720p versus 1080p. It is between 720p upscaled to 1080p versus 1080p native.

Which is the way literally everyone with a 1080p TV watches 720p. Jesus.

Then Major Nelson tweets :

"thanks Albert! That was amazing. I'm blown away. "

So my take of all this in the last couple days is both systems have rushed and problematic OSes. Given the complexity that game console OSes have on a shifting HW and compressed timeline it can make sense. However its sounding like between the two MS's Xbox is way farther behind and might not be able to catch up in time for launch.

I'd imagine the 180s have a decent amount to do with it, and the odd 3 OS deal. I hope the PS4's system is ok since its the system i have pre-ordered, but I'm still tentatively hopeful since they've been pretty cagey since the August press conference.

I do feel sorry for the poor SW developers across the board. The constant hours that will last up to and then beyond the launch.

I like how he doesn't even confirm they are working in the tweet. Just passively acknowledges their mere existence, while implying knowledge to these rumors.
