Good news, my not getting a PS4 is not set in stone either.

If Sony had DLNA support on PS4, I'd be buying it ASAP and turning my PS3 off and putting it in a closet someplace. Without DLNA on PS4, I'm going to hold off until sometime next year on getting a PS4 to replace my PS3 for my media computer.

As I mentioned in another thread, I've got about a terabyte of DVD rips (I own and possess all of the physical discs tyvm) and 60 gigs of legal MP3s, and being able to access that media on the PS3 is a crucial function of the device for me. I'd love to be able to use a new swanky PS4 interface to access all of that stuff, but if I have to keep the PS3 around, I'll just stick with it for now.

I'm not going to be the guy to tell my 4 year old daughter that her favorite movies have gone away.

I'm not excusing Sony's behavior here. I think it's asinine not to have this stuff at launch. However Sony's support on PS3 was kind of shitty for this. My Boxee Box and Plex on Roku do a much much much better job at those than the PS3 did. You may want to look into those options if you can.

not even Sony support can answer this question...Do cross gen games have the same trophy lists? If i were to buy AC4 now on ps3 then upgrade it, would the trophies carry over the ps4 version...idk why absolutely nobody can answer this...seems pretty simple

I see Krauthammer spilled the beans to you. However, it is odd that they took such a firm stance in the FAQ.

If I were to make an educated guess... they probably don't want to promise anything until they can nail down exactly when they can implement the correct firmware for it.

I'd be very surprised not to see a U-turn on DLNA very soon considering it's trending on Twitter. A lot of people use it these days. Not so fussed about the MP3 thing. I'm happy with whatever games give me, audio-wise. And I have other, preferred methods for listening to music whilst gaming any way.

Fair enough. I'll keep my ear to the ground.

I'd hazard a guess at probably not. I mean, there are separate trophy lists on PS3 across regions for some games. For example, Demon's Souls.

About a week ago it was announced that the trophies don't migrate. They are separate.

Hm, I've heard of Plex. I do have a Roku 3, and I was given to understand that there was some Plex-y way that you could do a DLNA-like thing with it.

I'll investigate, thanks.

I can now imagine furious rubbing of whiteboards and changes to feature time lines ;)

I just get this nagging feeling that we are missing something regarding external media devices. It is clear that they cannot be used like what is intended with the XBONE in that you can store game data on it, but nexer in the FAQ does it mention not supporting other file types.

The only one omitted is music files. It is not directly addressed, but based on that alone I get the impression at least that pictures and video etc. can be uploaded or played from an external device.

Honestly, if support is coming later the should have clarified the possibility. Social media has taken the story and ran with it.

https://twitter.com/search?q=ps4 dlna&src=typd&f=realtime

While I think canceling preorders because of this is an overreaction there are a lot of people who may be a little more than upset that they can't count on the device as a media receptacle.

Interesting that they would word it like that on the blog. They didn't leave much leeway for interpretation.

I know what you mean, I rip every BD movie I buy to a home server and throw the disc in a closet, so it's a huge deal to me as well. I was going to keep my PS3 anyway, but I was definitely not happy about the situation.

Anyone that uses names instead of numbers as unique keys for database items has to be an amateur.

Yeah, this. By a strange coincidence, anyone that has to take their service down whenever they do a schema change also has to be an amateur.

would you happen to have a link to that? I asked sony support last week, then again this morning...they specifically said nothing has been announced then linked me to the ultimate faq for all info. Not saying your a liar, just want confirmation. I guess you really should never trust chat support people

My most hated feature is the MP3 playback... I hate Music Unlimited. I got to use it for a year for free and it fucking Sucks.

This is worthy for outrage. Blow up shu now.

I'm more worried about local MP3 support than DNLA.

For me I was concerned about DLNA but that's been eased a bit. I stream TV shows all the time to my PS3. In contrast I haven't used an MP3 on my system for probably three years now. I can understand people wanting the capability though so hopefully they correct it.

Based on what's been said, it looks like they wanted to ensure the bulk of the game-related OS features were running properly first. The media stuff is secondary but not forgotten.

Can anyone explain why a basic bluetooth headset won't work on PS4? That one is probably the most mind-boggling to me.

Yeah Plex on Roku is pretty damn good man. Plex will index your library and everything but you do need a server computer to do that and then you can stream to the Roku box. And it will add thumbnails for movies/tv shows and organize them much better.

They just added a way to do something similar to Chromecast, you can 'fling' YouTube videos from a computer directly to Roku if you have Plex launched there. Pretty awesome.

Ding Ding Ding! No developer will ever commit to anything until it is a definite. Otherwise you are commited and the community will clammer at you for it.

Sony please put mp3 support in firmware 1.60.

for the mother of god.. if this machine is to replace my ps3 but it cannot even perform basic functions like play mp3's then would you kindly get bent?

I know Sony peeps are reading this.

They couldn't say "maybe" or "in a future update" as people would just get pissed with with every OS update that it missed.

Yeah... they did that with in-game XMB iirc and people moaned every time it wasn't there.

I don't see what the big deal about MP3s is. That only impacts you if you want to listen to music on your PS4, right? I can't imagine many people would ever even try doing that.

No external hard drive is the big bummer to me. :-\

Well now people believe (maybe falsely) that is has no chance of ever coming.

Bad either way i guess.

Wait so you can't even plug an external hard drive in with your movies on it and watch from that? Or is that still possible and only streaming via DLNA is out?

davepoobond

you can't put a price on sparks
all of this is changeable or update-able if they choose to do it, so it doesn't seem like any of it is "out of the realm of potential possibility" that they allow some of the stuff they are saying no to at a later time.

nothing particularly game-breaking for me. I don't use a game console for anything other than gaming and netflix ::shrug::

Most of these changes are really trivial for me and does not affect me as a consumer but I can understand some not liking it. I fully support their decision to not upload any gameplay esp the one the developer and publisher finds spoilerish. I dont want the youtube feeds filled with the ending and spoilery parts.

Some of these omissions just seem bizarre. Was it a time issue or a money issue? I assume most stuff will get added through the constant stream of firmware updates Sony loves to pump out (in the background, thank god). This does scare me regarding the Xbox One, though...

About that...

Will users be able to connect an external hard drive to expand storage on PS4?
No, this feature is not supported on PS4.

That's not what it says though. It says you won't be able to connect an external hard drive to expand storage. Obviously you can connect an external hard drive and the PS4 can read it, because what do you think a USB stick is? How would you do USB firmware updates if it couldn't read data off of an external hard drive?

So, it's quite possible that you can connect an external hard drive to watch movies from. You just can't use it for game data

Mmm yeah. I wouldn't worry too much. Some of these overreactions are going to look hilarious in the near future.

You can't say something like this when the company puts out a FAQ with concrete "no's" for every other question. They didn't leave much room for assuming it'd ever change, so of course people are pissed.

Yeah... they did that with in-game XMB iirc and people moaned every time it wasn't there.

Isn't that practically what they did here? Granted, they are already announced features, but people are going to be just as eagerly awaiting these:

What PS4 software features have been announced, but won’t be available at launch in North America?

Below is an overview of certain features that have been announced that will not be available when PS4 launches in North America.

Share controller via the internet to assist a friend
Suspend/Resume mode
Wireless Stereo Headsets support
Wireless Stereo Headset
Pulse Wired Stereo Headset
Pulse Wireless Stereo Headset Elite Edition

Then for Sony's sake - why did they not just say "This feature will not be available at launch", instead of acting like it won't ever be there?

I do not understand any of these game companies sometimes... what goes on behind the scenes to make these decisions?
