DS4 thumb sticks might have a problem?

This would have made the PS3's early situation so much worse.

Some men just want to see the world burn, I guess.

Maybe. Or maybe after we actually got to hold it in our hands and play a game with it, people would have said "Hey, this thing might look kinda funny but it feels and plays great." We'll never know, nobody outside of Sony R&D ever got to even try the damn thing. I was far more irked at getting the same controller design three consoles in a row. I've been playing on consoles since the fucking '70s man, getting a new console with a totally new controller was always part of the fun. You lousy crybabies robbed me of that joy. >=|

I share the same sentiment. With some slight modifications the batarang design would have been a great PS3 controller IMO. Playstation-centric gamers (ie those that are non platform agnostic) are a strange breed however. Any suggestion of change to the original controller design does seem to freak them out. I've never seen this trait in any other breed of fanboy.

I'm surprised but happy that they seem to have been accepting towards the DS4 which looks like a great revision to an already decent controller. Ugh is it next gen yet? Bring on the XB1 and PS4.

I would have given the controllerrang a shot, or some design based on it.

Instead, all the outcry just let to the same damn design being used for another 7 years, and everyone crying over that.

The DS3 wasn't terrible, but it was definitely out of date.

Glad Sony got their act together enough to put out the DS4.

And I'd still take the super grippy pad with chance of wear over a lot of other stick pads.

original

never really existed.

Still pissed that Sony folded so fast and caved to the internet crybabies about that one. Oh what might have been. Just shove it down our throats, Sony. Teach us what to like.

Lol, funny guy.

That horrible design reminds me off the microsoft sidewinder controllers. Would not have been happy to go in that direction again.

From the looks of it, I'm guessing this is one of those players who, when wanting to hold the stick in the forward position for an extended period of time, doesn't hold their thumb in the middle of the stick, as designed, but rather moves his thumb to the bottom of the stick and pushes it up from the edge, apparently with a pretty severe amount of force (it's not that kind of analog). I've done that myself on games like Gran Turismo, where my foot's on the gas most of the time, but I also know that pushing the stick harder against the plastic isn't going to help. That was also much easier to do on the DS3 with its "mushroom" shape, the stick just kind of naturally rolled off the thumb when pushing up.

Basically, he's holding it wrong. I doubt Sony's stress testing mashed the stick from that particular angle.

That said, I'm sure a lot of players use the sticks in the same way, and this will probably happen to other people (just not as fast... it takes some pretty serious effort to break a controller before its console even launches).

I agree with the new controller idea but that thing looks so cheap. Maybe it would have been great, but I remember playing with an aftermarket controller that looked similar to it and it felt horrible.

But in the end, you're right, we'll never know for sure.

They really should.

I'm a bit worried seeing that I sweat from my hands a lot. My 360 controller has a bit of wear&tear on the left analog since my left thumb touches the bottom at that angle for the most part. It's simply easier, quicker and less tiresome to touch the bottom instead of holding the center due to the asymmetrical design.

I only play PS3 when some exclusives come out so I never noticed how I approach the Dualshock design, but I think DS4 won't suffer from the same problem since the left analog is at the same height as my thumb, it will naturally rest at the center, not the bottom of the stick.

I just hope I won't have to spend 60€ every year for a new DS4

The sticks are lower quality than the DS4? Absolutely not. These sticks are far better.

The rubber is far lower quality.

A number of the PS4 games at PAX Prime had this issue, notably Galak-Z. This is going to become a huge issue come 2014. New DS4 inbound.

This is what I'm talking about. Games where you are often rotating the sticks will cause some friction and wear VERY fast on the analogs. I have no idea how sony missed this. I'm trying not to overreact, but I've been saying the last few pages if you just go and try it on YOUR OWN controller, you will quickly see, this is more than likely going to be a widespread problem that sony will have to address.

I'm pretty sure I see pubes near each stick.

edit- part of the controller design at the bend of the controller.

This is the second lot of DS4 thumbstick damage posted in as many weeks.
For a controller which isn't even physically in the wild to more than a handful of people, this is a concern.

In a few weeks after launch I'm almost positive a ton of people are going to be flocking to report in that theirs has experienced the same issue. People are laughing about it, and mocking the idea, but I'm ready for the shit storm that is about to follow this.

Just sounds like more next gen FUD. How long have Sony been selling controllers without this issue. Now suddenly they have forgot?

Glad US gets these over a month before mine comes.

If I see reports of controllers falling apart I'm canceling my pre order.

Some people are just way to hard on stuff they own. The worst controller I had was a 360 one. The left stick rubber was completely gone but that took 3 years of use, almost everyday of playing.

I guess we'll find out though.

I still think it looks more like the guy used a hobby blade of some sort to go in and slice it like that.

Hmm, I see me buying some analogue stick tops in the future if true. Though this is probably just a rare defective pad, or the guy is an animal. lol

I've been passing by the PS4 kiosk near me for the last week. The controller still looks new, even though it gets used very frequently.

As far as i'm concerned, its a non issue. I usually take good care of my gaming material.

Yep totally, I fucking hope not but....... people are laughing in some kind of odd fanboy frenzy. - I'm buying a PS4 but fuck man if criticism has to happen, it has to happen (no rear USB ports, fucking SERIOUSLY?) - I sure as shit hope the controller doesn't have this issue or I'm going to be pisssssssssssssed.

Been using my Dualshock 4 for 2 weeks on my PC regularly. and I've had no issues with it at all. Although I actually take care of my controllers instead of sandpapering the fuck out of them.

One photo though with no other reports?

Yikes, that's nearly as bad as my 360 controller in terms of rubber wear. It takes a good 2+ years for the damage to start being extensive on the 360 controller at least though.

The image does look like there's other damage with all the scratches, not sure what he was doing with it...

Here's my worst controller. 2 years old. I paint so that's why there's some orange on there. I didn't want people to throw up so I cropped it. You can see where my nail digs in. I don't have long nails. I just play like a Neanderthal. I can't help it.
I have a 360 gamepade that does look exactly like that. So I guess the guy on reddit is one of those crampers as well.

I'm fine with most of what sony has done, besides the whole MP3 thing, and I'm not necassarily saying this is their fault, but if it's not accepted and laughed off, it doesn't make it go away. As I said before I'm a massive sony fan, but it's better to address problems then to just write it off. I performed a few basic motions on the controller with just a bit of extra pressure and immediately the rubber was already peeling away, layer by layer, that's what that white flakey stuff is. I've advised multiple times people to try and see for themselves and they will see. It's fine though, laugh it off, call people xbots or trolls, I'm sure we'll see in just a few short weeks when this thread is blowing up. I will gladly eat crow if I'm wrong.

edit- for the record I'm hoping that people start talking about it sooner, so maybe we can get it known similar to the mp3 situation and have a plan ready for when this goes down.

Why does it look like the corner of the controller is cracked?

Anyway, it's clear that the cheetos dust and skin flakes caused a chemical reaction with the rubber on the sticks. Lesson- don't eat cheetos before using your controller.

That keeps getting brought up and it's a design on the ds4 itself, you can see on the otherside it mirrors that, but it's less visible. People have been joking saying it's a "pube", when in reality the controller isn't in as bad a shape as everyone is laughing it off as. It's the lighting making it look worse, the white debris is the rubber after burning away, it appeared on mine after some light friction as well. Again we can make jokes "lololol it's cheetoz lollololol", but it doesn't make it go away. A bunch of these are going to start being posted in the coming 2 weeks.

Still, have any gaffers that have DS4s seen anything?

Been Using one every day since Arkham Origins launched (what's that 3 weeks now?) for my PS3. still in near mint condition after no less than 7 hours a day of use from me or my wife. (playing various games on PS3)

honestly, I have no idea how that controller looks like that without someone flat out sanding the analog stick down. (in such a short time frame)

people who think they boomerang controller was going to be great, are like people who think Microsoft's DRM was going to be great.

tiny analogue sticks with all the problems of the dual shock 3 design.

buttons and d-pad at weird angles. look at the d-pad. now tell me which direction you have to press on the left analogue stick to go forwards.

MS tried some pads on PC that had similarly angled d-pads and buttons, and they sucked. this may have been comfortable to hold, but it would have been a terrible controller.

look at the circle button! so bad.

on topic, my Dual Shock 4 shows no sign of wear or tear.

Anybody who actually believes he sandpapered has to be paranoid... why the hell would he do that? I've already confirmed through my own DS4 that with minor friction it starts to wear away at the rubber.

Post a picture.

Basically what you are saying is that Sony designed a controller that falls apart with minor wear, I have a hard time believing this.

Something like this can probably be blamed on a storage or shiping problem too. Perhaps a few pallets were stored too hot causing the rubber to weaken up a just slightly. Hopefully it's only on a small scale. Only time will tell though.

This isn't really a major problem is it?

They will just have to use a different plastic for the thumbsticks in future

This guy clearly used something to do this. On the left stick, if you look closely, you can see all these tiny scratches above where the rubber is cracked. On the right stick, why is the outside of the stick missing a piece?

I think he let his cat get to it or something. That would explain why it's covered in dander and ash.

My controllers are doing great. Seems like FUD to me. We'll see how little truth there is to this as more people get their controllers.

I agree, this damage seems very suspect. I've been using the DS4 and I don't see it tearing the rubber any time soon. Maybe if I kept pressing and pulling down it would eventually rip, otherwise, I doubt it. When I play I tilt the sticks, I don't man-handle them.

Am I spreading FUD then? A long time sony fan, constantly defending sony consoles, and my controller had some serious wear and tear after a few simple motions with a little extra force.

Played some AC3 today with the DS4 (first time I've actually used it), and I found that my thumbs tended to stay more centered on the stick than they did when using a DS3, but they did still slide down a little. Still, I was using very little pressure, certainly not enough to tear the rubber off the stick in a week, even if I do plan on playing the shit out of AC4 next weekend.
