Am I an idiot? Is there a tutorial? I just got the game, went into squads mode as per the title screens recommendation, and there are literally no instructions of any sort.

That's Activision for you. Rake in millions and millions of dollars and give you nothing but substandard products.

I hope someone from Infinity Ward / Activision reads the following:

- I'm buying CoD Ghosts under the assumption that you have confidence in your product.
- Constant "BALANCE" updates to the multiplayer component show that you DO NOT have confidence in your product.
- This is one of my main gripes with Treyarch. They release a game and then proceed to "rebalance" the weapons over and over again. I do not support anything released by Treyarch and I will be vocal about it with my friends.
- Whenever a CoD game is released, a bunch of uninformed people say that everything that kills them is "overpowered". You have set a PRECEDENT that you do not listen to these people. Although there are exceptions such as MW2: Akimbo Model 1887 or MW3: Akimbo FMGs, those are few and far between. That is WHY I'm buying your game. Do not disappoint me!

I just wanted to put this out there. In the past, I have felt that I could count on the IW team. I just want to make sure that is still the case. There is nothing that is too good right now. People whine about something being too good, then they proceed to perform exactly the same with another weapon. Just don't listen to the crying masses, that is all I ask.

I leave you with the following quote from David Sirlin (replace BAN with NERF):
Only in the most extreme, rare cases should something be banned because it is “too good.” This will be the most common type of ban requested by players, and almost all of their requests will be foolish. Banning a tactic simply because it is “the best” isn’t even warranted. That only reduces the game to all the “second best” tactics, which isn’t necessarily any better of a game than the original game. In fact, it’s often worse!

The only reasonable case to ban something because it is “too good” is when that tactic completely dominates the entire game, to the exclusion of other tactics.

So unless everyone is running around with the SAME weapon, no action should be taken. Feel free to buff anything that seems underpowered though (shotguns are garbage primaries).

Bo2 balancing was what made it great though. They tweaked it until nearly every weapon had its niche and uses.

I'm dead serious here. How is this even a retail product with literally no direction or instruction included. Even a page on their website with rudimentary instructions would be welcome. They are charging $60 for a disc in a plastic case.

Sorry if I seem so shocked, this is my first non-Nintendo published purchase in years. I'm used to a colourful manual that at least describes the controls.

Uh... I disagree 100%. The balancing is great. Towards the mid of BO2 lifecycle everything was viable and it was a ton of fun just using different setups IMO

I haven't bought any Nintendo published games so I can't really comment there but multi-page manuals died this gen on PS3/360. The majority of games just have a single sheet with controls printed on them. I think where Ghosts falls on its face is the actual in-game menus have almost no instruction at all and the menus are overly complicated.

True, the maps are larger, but is it just me or do the SMGs fire like lasers? (Especially the vector with a grip). For that reason, I've been doing fine even on big maps with SMGs.

Other observations:

They got rid of Demolition and Search and Destroy, my two favorites, WTF?

Most maps don't have discernible routs, or the routs peak out at other ones, meaning a million lines of site to guard against, and death from any angle. This adds to the utility of SMGs. Gotta be quick.

Spawn system still fucked. They said they fixed this in MW3, which became obviously false when I and a teammate spawned in full view 3 feet in front of an enemy (he saw us pop into view). Have spawned near enemies here, but nothing that bad yet.

S&D is coming back Nov 17? Not sure about demo though.. SMGs are pretty low recoil but almost all of them go 5HK long range except for the MTAR (which is the best SMG in the game IMO.. only 4hk long range)

What guns are you guys enjoying? I'm using Honey Badger (safe bet) and started messing with the MSBS.

Want to jump in to other weapon types but spending coins on a weapon you don't know about sucks. I pick up some great ones but never remember what they are.

So far here are my favorite setups:
SA-805 (2nd AR) with RDS + grip (40-25 damage curve so 3 bullet close 4 bullet far) with 723rpm (2nd highest AR)

MR28 w/ silencer + rds (65-34 dmg curve w/ 1.56 hs multiplier) so OHK headshot close range, 2hk close 3hk far w/ 600 RPM (fastest markesmen rifle) -- OHK w/ HS on MK14 is further out but the recoil is almost unforgiving and the RoF is a lot slower. You can spam the MR28 close range pretty easily and as a result it is a much better hip fired semi-auto gun which means I can run MR28 w/ no secondary but MK14 I always run with a pistol for close/mid

MTAR-X w/ silencer/grip + holo (40-25 damage) so 3-4hk.. 722 rpm but lowish recoil

CBJ-MS + Rapid fire is decent too. Run it w/ slight of hand/quickdraw/marathon. The CBJ is highest rate of fire SMG in the game w/ rapid fire (1099) so ttk in CQB is very good. I noticed the recoil isn't bad either. Its max range is about mid/mid-short range though so you have to be very careful about engagements.

--
MTAR probably takes silencers the best for SMG since it only reduces down to 4HK at long range. All other SMGs are 5HK long range (yikes)

on paper I think SA-805 should be the best silenced AR because of its slightly longer damage curve compared to FAD. SA-12 should be decent too but has a slower TTK at 4hk range (although its 3hk is much further so if it's a mid-long range map you might be better off with the AK)

I just checked the digital manual and it simply mentions the supported controllers and gives parental warning and such. I played a bit of the campaign and it told me how to use a couple buttons. I quit after 30 minutes and went back to squads. I barely know what a load out is, I have no idea what any of the weapons are or do, I don't understand the in-game UI, "squads" seems odd when I appear to be the only player on the team… I just appear on a map with no instruction or direction at all. Am I supposed to kill everyone? Escape from the map (it is a prison after all)?

Was this game created in a bubble? Have the developers played or done anything other than CoD in their lives? How does the company expect to get new players when there is absolutely no hint, tutorial, manual, or even a rudimentary list of terms used in the game? This is by far the most user-unfriendly and opaque video game I have ever played in my life, and I have been gaming since 1980.

Dude you're not alone. I've played almost all the CODs and I barely have any idea of what squads is. Pretty sure it's just AI-filled multiplayer or something but I don't even know. I still don't completely understand all the characters/leveling/squad points/etc fully. Shit is confusing and I have no idea why they did it this way.

The only way I've figured out anything is by asking people in lobbies and that ends up with a lot of misinformation

I thought I should have AI teammates but whenever I play, I seem to be all alone. If I am supposed to be alone, it doesn't seem very fair when there are a dozen enemies gunning me down.

I'll look for an online tutorial or something. Any links would be welcome.

Nah it's AI opponents only except for squad vs squad which is you + ai vs another person + ai (I think)

edit: yup.. just confirmed. If you're playing objective mode it's best to clear the way for your AI to do the objectives instead of doing them yourself from what I can tell (i.e. instead of capping A you should kill enemies around A and let your teammates push up). There is a cap on how much XP you can get per day in squads though so after you hit that you no longer get notifications that you've killed someone which is confusing if you're used to core modes.

I found the official "manual" on the official website. The web page claims:
"Get all the details on gameplay mechanics, controls, online play and game modes. Find out how all the new features work to maximize your Call of Duty ®: Ghosts experience. You can also find instructions, help resources and credits packed into this handy handbook. Pick your preferred platform and download the digital game manual now."

All the manuals are literally just 17 pages of developer and publisher credits. Not one iota of actual information. I think this game is just one big troll on gamers.

I side loaded the app on my Nexus 7 but it keeps saying I need to play my first game, is there a trick to get it working?

yeah, because a tiny copy-pasta (and it's not) overpowers everything else, like amazing campaign, great multiplayer, yadayada. I don't understand humans sometimes.

Wow this game is ugly as hell on ps3. I'm not even touching the sp because it's offensive to the eyes. Mp is not much better with tons of low res textures and Jeffries out the ass. Looking forward to the ps4 version.

No offense but you sound like a super casual gamer. There are no instructions for you. Just play the game and learn as you go. You dobt have to learn everything at once to have fun.

Here, let me help you get started. A load out is a set of weapons/perks/kill streaks that you customize to your play style. Since you're new to shooters, you don't have a play style. Maybe you should stick to the pre-set load outs for a bit.

Played a match in Strikezone and someone got a KEM Strike from a care package.

Holy shit.

There's a very high chance of getting a kem strike on strike zone. It's the same with the gas on that other map.

There are no pre-set load outs lol. There are default set-ups when you choose a character, yeah, but the loadouts aren't even completely maxed out in terms of "points" you can spend...

One of the worst maps I've had the displeasure of playing. Activision is just hiring these amateurs off the street and churning out COD games. Give us these gigantic maps with a million angles to get hit from but can only be played 6v6 in current gen. What a fucking rip off. I can't believe they had the audacity to completely take the ping indicator out. It looks like Treyarch is the go to dev because BO2 is way more fun than this game.

You know what else ruins online? Puttin in switches to fucking doors on Domination maps, making the center territory completely open to one team and unopen to the other

Searched google midway through the match to TRY and figure out where the fucking switch was to no avail.

Bullshit dynamic map.

I'd put quotes behind dynamic. I don't consider a bus submerging when you stand on it dynamic, i call it fucking physics (referring to the map "flood"). And what the hell is with having a burst fire option on marksman rifles. It's as if they were designed to be broken with that attachment.

Still though, I'm having a blast with the game, I cannot lie. I think the maps are the best since Modern Warfare 1 and World at War. It's like Infinity Ward said "Okay, enough with this three-lane bullshit."

I can see why there is no manual. When you get around to trying to figure out how operations work you'll probably complain that it isn't written out but try making this clear this on a one page leaflet:

http://www.reddit.com/r/CODGhosts/comments/1q52m2/in_depth_guide_to_operations_and_squad_points/

LOL! Talk about one of the most confusing mechanics ever..

campaign was "ok" it had its cool moments, multiplayer is frustrating, complicated and a huge step back.

Best level so far imo. Could anyone tell me where I am in the story so far in percentage?

I'm having more fun with this campaign than BO2's so far. Game feels like this all the way.

Before playing the game, I would have agreed with you. Now, I think this is just a rationalization for not buying a game you weren't going to buy anyway.

I rented it for the PS3 this weekend, and was surprised at how long it takes to level up.... and then I realized it was double XP weekend.

By the time I get to start playing for keeps on next gen, I am going to be so far behind it's literally not funny. I am going to be level one going up against all the 360 players who carried over their progress from current gen.

At least the starting weapons seem decent, but I am not looking forward to the butt whipping I am going to to take for about the first 3 or more weeks on next gen Ghosts.

I'm so glad they took out the Ping indicator. All it did was give people an excuse. "I just died because I'm 3 barring!"

I think Ghosts maps take more time to learn. They're all complex, and it makes the learning curve more severe. You really have to get to know them before feeling comfortable.

I hit level 30 last night.

I'm still enjoying it and just recently got very comfortable with my loadout setups. I now feel confident that I can accomplish what I want to in a match.

There are still a few weapons I want to try out, when I get the points. But right now I'm rolling with Honey Badger, MSBS, Remington, L115

I love the variety of Perks. Just wish there was more Killstreaks to chose from.

Why do they need to include a tutorial when the past 7(?) games have been more than enough of a tutorial for Ghosts?

But seriously, I played Ghosts the other day for about 8 hours, didn't like it, graphics seemed much worse than BO2, everything seemed especially blurry. MP was more of the same, sliding, leaning, shooting while climbing aren't things I'd like to spend $60 on. It's gotten way to easy now as well, I haven't played a CoD game in a good while, but when I got the Honey badger in my hands I got a Maniac easily in my 2nd life. Campaign seemed cool though, I didn't get to finish it! Extinction, was alright, it could've been a little more fleshed out though.

Why do they need to include a tutorial when the past 7(?) games have been more than enough of a tutorial for Ghosts?

Normally it wouldn't be a huge deal since COD gameplay is usually jump in and go, but the addition of Squads and the strange way reshuffling operations works - it would've been nice to have a quick few screen text tutorial explaining how it works.

I wonder how many people playing in this thread realize the mechanics behind the operations list.
