No. Galaxy 2 got awesome reviews as well, but almost didnt get any goty, and a lot of sites didnt even nominate it.

because gaming journalists desperately want games to be a "respected" medium in the mainstream. Desperately seeking dat citizen kane moment, hoping to get some respect from the extended family at Thanksgiving when they ask him about his "video game website job"

Any word on how big the worlds are, compared to Mario 64?

One of things that bothers me about this game is that it seems as though the "levels" are somewhat small, or presented in a "2D style" (like the shadow level).

One review mentioned taking 9.5 hrs to beat it. That doesnt include 100% the game, and the post game worlds.

"This is Mario like you’ve never seen him before, and unlike so many of his next-gen rivals, he nips along at an effortless 60fps. If the true measure of new hardware’s worth is how stark the difference is between it and what came before, then this is the most next-gen game that 2013 has yet produced."

Like what? Cat suit, the duplication cherry thing, speedrun levels, Captain Toad levels and the challenge houses?

Reviewers don't seem to think any of those are very substantial or inventive, except maybe the cat suit. They'd probably know better than you.

Conveniently leaving out it being the first ever 4 player coop 3D mario game, amongst a number of other gimmicks.

We'll see, I'll judge for myself when I play it. But Galaxy 2 is guilty of not being groundbreaking like previous titles. It did not shake up the formula in any meaningful way. It was a direct sequel with new gimmicks. And none of that got in the way of my enjoyment of the title.

edit- It's also a bit silly to say "reviewers think the gimmicks aren't substantial or inventive" when there are many overwhelmingly positive ones.

I want to force feed everyone who shat on this game at E3 some major rotisserie crow.

To be fair: the game looked like another new super mario game without anything new or interesting.

Then suddenly it looked like goddamn christmas and new years wrapped in one.

Reviewers not knowing what they're talking about as usual. It's 720p. Just because your system is set to output at 1080p and your TV then says it's getting a 1080p signal does not a 1080p game make.

It's not some reviewers...It's EDGE. Most of the time they are very well informed, that's why I'm asking.

And that, essentially, is 3D World's biggest problem. Where Galaxy created episodes for its ideas, working through a narrative that left you satisfied by the end, Super Mario 3D World's stages feel more like sketches. Such short levels mean you're constantly wishing for more; a sign that EAD's got a lot right, for sure, but we rarely felt quite satisfied in getting to play with the ideas we liked the most.

that's sort of strange because that's typically how i feel about most Galaxy stages.

True. And this is part of the reason for the perceived media bias against the childish and gamey Nintendo that doesnt have an interest in this vision for the medium.

Mother 3 is better written than almost any Western video game and speaks greater volumes of the human condition while having more sharp criticisms of society than any AAA game.

Reading through all the other reviews make seem the Escapist review like one written by a 9-year old child

Moviebob is one of the weirdest Mario fans ever. He became instantly hyped about NSMB2 and SM3DL simply because they had the Tanooki Suit in it, he defended the NSMB series' lack of innovation and wrote an entire book on why Super Mario Bros 3 is supposedly the best game ever.

For him to dock a point because Bowser is the antagonist is hilarious.

Umm.. that doesn't make sense. What's next-gen about this Mario. Could have done the same game on lesser hardware.

I was one of those people, so I will eat it. Even though I've been rather jaded with Nintendo of recent years....I guess I'll just get this goddamn thing over with and buy one. Fucking hell. Oh well, I got all the Nintendo consoles before this one, so might as well go down with the ship if it does sink.

WHY DID THEY HAVE TO RELEASE THIS ON THE DAY THE PS4 COMES OUT (Europe)

ElTorro

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
Holy crap, those scores... Give me Mario or give me death.

“The game wasn’t designed [to meet specific] review scores – I was hoping Super Mario 3D World could score in the mid 90s and last I checked it’s around 93, so I’m hoping it goes up. The game uses only three buttons to play, so it’s not the type of game reviewers would score high for the birthday of a next-gen system. The game was targeted as what we call a second purchase; you know, people may purchase Wii U for Wii Fit U or Sonic Lost World, but if they also buy Super Mario 3D World, this is a game that you can play with your family or your significant other.

Damn even gamestop gave a 9

Oh. Wow.

About the reviews, I'm actually surprised it's getting so many 10s. My prediction was 9s and high 8s with complaints of it not being "Galaxy" and no online play.Especially with new consoles out, I figured reviewers wouldn't be as keen on traditional Mario gameplay and storytelling.

I'm glad I was wrong and am now hyped.

I have over 25 hours logged now and am still finding stuff. That includes one save for solo play and one for cooperative.

Sounds good man. I know I'll be going for 100% with all four charachter's and racing other ghost mii's so I'm sure it will last me a while.

I do wish there was a challenge mode like NSMB: U. I sunk a whole lot of time into that.
