PAL Charts - Week 48, 2013

People have been downplaying the middling performance of Pokemon for a while now, but it almost got pushed completely out of the Top 40 this week. That seems like a bad sign.

First thing I noticed. Nintendo needs to jump on that stat. A nice price drop before Christmas would do wonders

Pokemon is really lower than I'd have expected at this time of the year but then I remember the 3DS has never really done better than "so-so" in the UK.

Also I'd expect this kind of drop for X1. It's PS4 launch week too and that obviously would take attention away from new purchases and the people who bought theirs last week are probably not in a hurry to get new games. PS4 launch is incredible though, especially with how dire the market had looked for a while. Next few weeks will be interesting to see which console has the momentum.

I think i saw it on the bottom in all formats combined top 40

Yeah, it hasn't completely vanished, which is mildly encouraging. A title like that needs to do well.

Shame about it and 3D World being held back by their limited audience.

Yeah, I still think £35 - £40 is too much asking price for 3DS software. This week GAME started sales for GTAV @ £30. Nintendo software prices are really holding back the 3DS imo.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

There have been many new entries / rises during this week, and having two major launches near each other affects a lot all other titles charting from past weeks. Numbers are surely way higher than usual in this period in top 40, even at the bottom.

And seeing MK7 back in this kind of week is possibly a good signal for 3DS hardware sales.

Being no. 1 after 2 days of sales when one of your competitors released their console 1 year ago - this makes a good headline, lol.

Ryse had really poor word of mouth from what it looks like.

Killzone was heavily bundled, but it's still nice to see an exclusive title hit number one at launch rather than the standard fair multiplats.

Where's jvm and his weekly round ups? I didn't see last week's would be interested to know if the Bone launch helped this year pull ahead of 2012, this week I think the PS4 launch could help 2013 pull ahead of 2011.

@MagicPaint: in order to prove even more my point, I think it's good to make a comparison between last week's and this week's All Formats charts. Why? Because it eliminates the "problem" of having so many different SKUs of many titles invading the charts, with both PS4 and One launches.

As you can see, considering two brand new entries in top 20 (Killzone and Knack), + titles rising due to deals (Batman & Angry Birds), Pokémon didn't drop that much in chart, and not even Zelda, after all. In the meanwhile, Mario Kart 7 rose a lot. Layton did lose too many places considering these factors, though...and the same could be said about Xbox One main exclusives, IMHO.

Regarding Pokemon concern, will the 2DS+Pokemon £99 bundle sainsburys are doing help? Also the GAME cyber Monday deal this morning did sell out of X (£27.99...not great 50p less than I paid at launch) but given some of their deals have sold out before going live I doubt we can read much into that.

Yep, I did think it was a questionable decision.
Same goes for releasing ALBW during the XBO launch week too.
When else could they have released these? Later and you get too close to Christmas, sooner and the game is not ready. Maybe Braverly Default should have stuck to 2014 (do I recall correctly it was going to be 2014 at one point then suddenly moved to 2013).

I'm not surprised with ALBW performance though. I struggle to remember when a Zelda game was not front loaded here in the UK hence why I'm trying my chances for a price drop. I wonder if other owners feel the same.

And seeing MK7 back in this kind of week is possibly a good signal for 3DS hardware sales.
Ah so chart-track count the 3DS hardware (I'm sure it is a digital copy though) as that is Amazon £130 lightning deal.

Checking week 48 of 2012 in comparison is kind of interesting. That's the week WiiU launched and its biggest seller was Nintendoland at 11. Compared to PS4 owning half the top 10, the situation looks pretty clear.

The lack of splits just when next gen heats up is so disappointing =( At this rate we won't get shit in the next NPD thread which would be even more disappointing.

Outside of PS4 and The Last of Us Sony's WWS output did terrible this year sales wise. Bombs left and right :/

Probably their best year of games too. An incredible amount of diversity and most, if not all bombed spectacularly. Beyond must have hurt the worse though. Massvei ad campaign and yet they couldn't manage half the sales of Heavy Rain with an even bigger install base...

How did GOW:A do?

Sold half of 3 if I'm not mistaken. Charted second behind TR, so I guess it wasn't all bad.

By the franchise's standard sales were pretty underwhelming, at least at full price. Sony dropped it to 40$/€ about a month after release which helped the sales but should also tell you how poorly it did initially.

Ah ok. That's too bad heard the game was rather fun but not as good as previous iterations

Ok, email sent. Let's see if they answer. I seriously hope so.

It really is a shame there is no tracking for digital purchases. As everyone I know with Xbox Ones buy every game digitally. Not sure how much difference that would make to the charts on both platforms.

Yeah the Individual SKU formatting and lack of raw numbers does skew things a little. But I expected a Pokemon rise around this time, especially with the availability of 2DS deals. That it is staying relatively flat isn't very encouraging imo.

I wonder if both Killzone and Knack drop off the charts when people start trading them in and there is a glut of used copies in stores. Just hope the initial sales success of KZ:SF doesn't delude Guerrilla into thinking they are making good games when by most accounts KZ:SF is severely flawed.

CEX have just shy of 900 copies for sale (it's possible they could have removed the game from any bundled consoles they took in) and 410 copies of Knack.

CEX numbers with regards to Shadowfall could be skewed for the reason I mentioned above though.

It hurts dude. Especially Beyond. It did well over Black Friday at least. It sold out in less than a minute on Amazon.com (faster than TLoU) indicating a lot of people are interested in playing it (just not for 60 bucks because of the mixed reviews probably). Combining all the sales Beyond did roughly 350k in the first month. So right now it probably sits somewhere between 400k-600k. Not catastrophic, but not good either. This tweet was especially painful. It came in 30 minutes after NPD released their numbers for October. Those last words.... :(

How did GOW:A do?
Not good compared to GoW 3. Big ad campaign too.
