Controversial Opinion – PS4 case and control design seems rushed and cheap

The DS4 controller looks like it took design lessons from the car made by Homer Simpson, and having an 8 hour battery life makes me want a smart phone inside it. And I won't lie when I read about Sony testing new stick placement but sticking with tradition for tradition's sake made me wonder what's going on considering every other controller has the left stick in the primary position.

They stuck with it because it's better, deal with it.

I don't get it... Is it a rare case to have your PS4 be very silent compared to your PS3 slim?
Since I have them side by side and the PS4 can't be heard at all by me, even with the game disc running....
:/
It's not rare, it's just not everyone experience :(
And to everyone complaining about usb cable length or charging problem, you need one of these. 30€, great build quality, very well design connnector, solves all your problems:

Yea I never understood the hype for the PS4 but I do understand the hate for the XB1

Both are rushed but the steps that Sony took backwards compared to the PS3 makes me question what's going on like no 3D Blu Ray, HTPC/DLNA support, backwards compatibility, even regular Blu rays, etc. Instead they're trying to lure you in with paywalls like Music Unlimited and now require PSN for multiplayer. And throw in wobble gate, slow wifi (even compared to the XB1) poor vertical cooling, Vita remote play's lag, etc.

I'll be there for the 2.0 or Slim version but until then they need to make a lot of improvements, and offer exclusive games I want to play other than Resogun. It'd also be great if 1080p and 60fps become the standard along with stable servers/OS (looking at you Battlefield 4)

Sorry but just because the DS4 doesn't have a 360 / xb1 stick layout doesn't make it inferior.... Opinions how do these work again?

A console with a bigger box, less powerful hardware and external psu produces less noise and heat than one with a smaller box, more powerful hardware and internal psu.

It's not exactly a surprise.

There's a lot of OS material that the touchpad can be used for and it can be ease of use... Your brain just isn't innovative enough to imagine ideas if the only thing you can muster up is how gimmicky it is. I already have 5 good uses for it that I would love to be implemented.

If your main use for it is just being lazy with menus well okay then. Still won't add stuff that hasn't been done before in games. Look at me! I'm rubbing and touching my enemies! So much fun!

I really don't care if they use the touchpad in games though. Just make it optional. Sixaxis being forced was the main thing I hated for certain PS3 games.

Both next-gen systems could have used more time in the oven so to speak as they all are deficient in some aspect because of being rushed to the market. I don't feel like it's "next-gen" when they do many things worse than last gen. That's why I sold mine and will wait a year to see if they get their act together. My PC/PS3/Vita will keep me busy.

For me the DS4 is damn near perfect, all I need is the option to turn off the light as it adds nothing to the user experience and drains the battery fast I assume. I'm pretty sure this will come in a future update.

Throw in Wii pro controller and just about every other controller too when it comes to the left stick. The dpad has been secondary ever since the N64, and for fighters real sticks are the way to go imo. Examples of opinions would include your post along with the rest in this thread :) The stick placement can be preference, the 8 hour battery life is a weakness

I don't think I've ever read a post on GAF that I've disagreed with more. Well played.

Yea I never understood the hype for the PS4 but I do understand the hate for the XB1

My PS4 is built like a tank, runs like a machine, and my Thumb Sticks are great with no wear.

I am sorry you seem to be experiencing all the PS4 issues that people are disappointed about. Seems like some bad luck to have ALL the issues, instead of an isolated issue like a small number are having.

I haven't used one, so my opinion is hardly valid, but the PS4 controller does look a bit ugly and cheap to me. Super rounded handles just look a little... childish? I'm not sure how to describe it.

The thumbsticks look like they're made of a cheap material as well.

Again, haven't used one though, so I hope that when I do my concerns will turn out false.

A lot of words

Nope, case looks slick as fuck & runs quiet as hell for me. Maybe get your system checked OP?

And the controller is nearly perfect, definitely doesn't feel "rushed and cheap". I'm actually hearing that more about the One controller which I really found surprising, I haven't seen it yet but I've been hearing a lot of people say the plastic feels and looks cheap, the sticks are worse than they were on the 360, and the bumpers are shitty.

Yeah, the cord could be longer. Just buy a longer cord, they're cheap. Or charge it when you're not using the system.

the only real innovation is the controller fits better in your hand
The mic/speaker , touchpad and flashing light have added nothing to my gaming experience and as a result of having these I have to put up with crap

How is it innovative to fit your hand better? The touch pad is innovation for a console controller whether you enjoy using it or not, I like it quite a bit for Killzone.

I would say the best new thing about the controller is the headphone jack, I've already used this several times for late night gaming sessions.

I'll give you the light though, it sucks and I should be able to turn that off.

Anything that paints the ps4 in a bad light is like throwing a petrol can onto a fire

a bad xbox thread..you could strangle kittens put them though a mincer then shove them up your ass and nobody would blink

Oh I see now...burp Why should we take anything you say serious after this post?

I agree with some of the OP points. The blue light on the controller is dumb, and apparently it greatly contributes to the battery being poor, and it definitely is poor.

The PS4 definitely gets louder than the XB1, but I would hardly call it a problem. But at the same time, I guess I do prefer the quietness of the XB1, even if it is larger.

As a long time user and fan of the 360 pad (on the console and still on the PC), I've got to say that the DS4 might be the best controller I've ever used. I was disappointed in stick placement, but the added space due to the touch pad has eliminated my issues with it. I used my roommate's XBONE pad a bit and while that is also a nice design I have more issues with it. The bumpers are odd and it feels a bit cheaper all around. Especially when shaking it in Dead Rising and hearing he batteries bounce around inside.

Aesthetically the PS4 is a much more beautiful unit than the beta max styling offered by the One. And why the hell is the power brick on that massive thing still outside of the box?!

Because the Xbox One is nearly silent. And the PS4, apparently, is not.

There are different design tradeoffs taken in each console, because they apparently had different goals. Microsoft wanted their console to be silent. Also, an external power supply is replaceable in case of failure.

One thing that many people miss is that many tests like Digital Foundry's and such show that despite being larger and having a huge fan, the Xbox One runs warmer.

Also, as consoles get more and more powerful and their form factor doesn't change too much, it becomes a bad idea to store them in cabinets. They need room for airflow.

That being said, both the ps4 and xbox one look a bit cheap, but at least one of them actually is cheap, while the other is overpriced for the specs, unless you're a huge fan of kinect.

I disagree with OP in almost every regard. I think the PS4 and DS4 build quality all phenomenal. The console is quiet, powerful and the controller is damn intuitive and feels excellent in the hand.

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?
Controversial Opinion tags are annoying as all hell.

Some of your points are valid but I don't think you've done all you can too secure your consoles. Making any failures partially your fault.

Pretty much exactly what I was going to say, I will add that my console runs almost silent all of the time.. and I love the DS4, best controller I've ever used

I actually face palmed reading the op. If the PS4 was a rushed "cheap" design, what does that make the xbox ones huge slab with tons of wasted space... no replaceable hard drive etc.?

I can understand the battery life comment of the DS4 (which is entirely due to the LED's). That can and hopefully will? be changed in a future OS update, or perhaps on a game by game basis?

Also... seriously learn how electronics work. Putting ANYTHING that produces heat in a confined space will destroy it. It needs to bring in COOL air to cool off the machine. All you are doing is cycling the same (hot) air you previously released out of the box.... making the temperature even HOTTER.

The only parts of the DS4 I have problems with are the light bar and the lack of good tactile feedback on the option and share buttons. I feel like both of these issues are pretty minor when the controller excels in everything else. And it's a giant leap past the old DS designs.

Of course! Clearly the PS2 disk read errors and Xbox 360 red rings of death I had back in the day was my all my fault and not the fact that they were poorly built / designed!

I still have OG Xbox Duke pads that are sturdy enough to be used as weapons but my DS4 has started creaking, the battery life lasts a breath and the thumbstick quality is incredibly disappointing. I've no problem with the sound of the fans but the DS4 is definitely the biggest (only?) let down I've had regarding the console.

Controversial Opinion tag in topic title = Hey look at me! Click this topic and yell at me because I need attention!

Reality is, people just have opinions, and more than that, people have different physiology and preferences.

Enough said, and this thread will either be locked or drop off the first few pages quickly, then into obscurity because most other posts know.

Yea, it's not like he detailed his complaints and justified his topic title or anything. Must be an obvious troll.

I was looking at getting one but prefer the look of the US one where the controller needs to be pushed down to lock into place and then again to 'release' it.

Is it kid-proof? I got the Orb because it looked nice (and was half the price) but in reality it's a pile of pants and hard to get the controller in the correct place (and I don't want scratches around the jack where you keep missing it).

Yes, kids, please stop this. We don't need warnings to get all pissed off at you before we actually get all pissed off at you. Now you are just pissing someone off twice when once would have been good enough :)

Also, sorry, but for the people that bite their controller I just don't know anymore. I have played KZ over 50 hours I think and I have nothing. Did you read that? 50 hours of solid gameplay on this thing. Nothing. Not even wear on the friggin' sticks. I ca still see all the little creases of the material. This is between two controllers. None of them have anything wrong in this way but one of them had a messed up R1.

Literally not even wear on the damn thing. Some of you got some acid skin problems or you simply eat your controllers. Those pics of people having chunks of pad come out are just really hard to believe though I realize many things can happen. We don't get many of those anymore leading me to think they are very isolated cases or concern trolls from launch.

"You had 4 RRODs, 2 YLODs and your PS4 goes in to overdrive in the same cupboard and you think you've made the 'best furniture choice'?"

The entitlement generation will live on I suppose. For the love of god get a proper rack genius.

I do not own a Xbone to compare, but when it comes to the controller I will say its miles ahead of the DS3. I felt the same way as you until I tried using the DS3 again. The triggers are a lot better and tighter on the DS4 as well as the analog sticks. I didn't realize how loose the DS3 analog sticks were till I tried using them again.

The light is annoying though. But the controller does not feel rushed.

My PS4 is whisper quiet.. As for rushed, don't think so. look at the design of the cooling systems .

XB1 - Classic PC fan/heatsink, Cool air pushed down through the heatsink and hot air is and spread throughout the case , I can see the inside of that case being a dust bowl in 6 months.

PS4 - Cool Air is pushed through the side of the heatsink and the air is directed out of the case MB is shielded , nothing for dust to stick to.

Its obvious that a lot more thought went into the cooling of the ps4 whereas MS built a big box and thew in a big fan . that should get them at least through the warranty period. It will be interesting to see a teardown of both systems after a year of use.

I am still trying to figure out the unholy hell people are doing to their controllers. 3-4 hours of Warframe almost daily since launch, and using it for PCSX2 and my sticks are perfectly fine. No flaking, degradation, nothing silly like that.

I'm not sure about kid-proof, there is nothing to guide the controller into place. You still need to put it in the right spot, at the right angle. That being said, there is a piece of plastic that retracts while the controller just falls into place, it's pretty awesome. You don't need to push on the controller at all.

Incorrect. The vent on top is the exhaust. Dust that settles in there will be blown out. Cool air is drawn in from the sides, the back, and the front. Huge surface area, so dust collection on the vents shouldn't be an issue.

My bad , had the fan blowing opposite.. Still the same problem... air is being pulled across the PCB then through the heatsink. that case will fill with dust.

Personally the PS4 doesnt feel cheap at all and I've yet to hear the fan kick up. What I do hear(and it is pretty loud initially) is both the HDD and bluray disc drive spin up. aside from the HDD and BR drive noise, definitely the quietest system I own.

As for the DS4, my only complaints are the light bar and battery life. Light bar is pretty damn bright in a dark room and battery life is way less than the DS3. At least the battery issue is mitigated by the fact that I have my phone a device charger mounted under my end table next to the couch. Other than that, the controller is the best Ive held. Makes it really hard to go back to the DS3.

I've read the OP and have a question: Do people really still put consoles in tv cabinets with doors? I thought it was really obvious that ventilation would be an issue with the door closed.

I'm surprised about the battery life of the controller. My Vita has a freaking screen and may just last longer.

For comparison, I switched out my rechargeable batteries in my X1 controller last night. That's 10 days of my wife and I gaming on one charge!

I don't think that this is as much of a problem as you seem to think it is. It is far more of an issue to have dust build up on the heat sink of the processor than other components in the system.
