Controversial Opinion – PS4 case and control design seems rushed and cheap

I never buy enclosed cabinets for my electronics, it is not good to have them in small poorly ventilated wooden enclosures. Go with open air glass shelves/entertainment centers.

As for the controller. I like it so much more than the DS3, so I'll cut it some slack on the other stuff. Yes, the material on the left stick of one of my controllers is coming off. It seems like its just more of the same material and it's not really affecting me tbh.

Battery life is bad on both of mine, like really bad. I haven't tested it out, but I feel like I'm charging and swapping them way too frequently. I also agree about the cord, but all electronics makers screw you on cord lengths.

The light is also annoying when playing games in the dark, I hope they can disable that crap in the future. Not a huge deal, but I can see the reflection on my screen at times.

I though glass shelves keep the heat around???

Our old cabinet was a multi-shelf glass thing but the foxtel box (which has vents on the top) cooked the shelves above

The console is very good looking and the controller is very good, I felt my 399 were extremely well spent. I don't know what you are talking about.

That cabinet is horrific enough in the UK for ventilation, let alone Australia. I tried it with a PS3 fat and thin and both seemed like they were going to explode within minutes before I was forced to remove them, so I don't think this issue is PS4 specific. Despite the fact that the One is more quiet I'd expect similar trouble down the line there.

Edit: Read fail - You should be fine with the "expedit".

The only thing I'll agree with is the touchpad on the controller. Seems gimicky and pointless for games just as the sixaxis was for the PS3. All sixaxis did for my PS3 games was pointlessly get in my way. Only the diehard fans would try to defend it being used in games that really didn't need it at all.

bluray drive is the only noisy thing to me.

i'm not sure if i'm deaf or some of you guys are just really sensitive to noise and/or play games with the volume really low...
It's the same thing on all forums I read: some guy says his PS4 gets really loud when playing killzone, some other guy answers that it's barely audible after the initial install.
I think it's a given at this point that some PS4 are noisier than others. I guess it's good news for everybody that the PS4 can be somewhat silent, but it still sucks to get one of the loud ones. I personally plan to change the thermal paste on mine. I'll just wait a couple of months just to be sure it doesn't have any other problems before I void the warranty.

Only time I hear the console is when it initially reads the disc, then it stops and can't hear it at all. Console sits on top of my stand under a mounted TV.

Isn't the loud noise when you turn it on the Blu-ray drive and not the fan?

It makes a bit of noise for about 15 seconds then switches off, presumably it checks what game is in the console and reads it for the dashboard info.

Of all the features they added into the control that come across as a gimmick that appears to be the main one..my issue is not just the with the usage of it within games but its placement on the control itself

Apart from being loose on my control now its in an awkward spot....the vita at least was thought out much better but this is simply well throw it on the control somewhere.

If it was placed on the rear of the controls or maybe on the tops of each of the handles is would be easier to use and you could perhaps have some extra control of things

It's hard to write it off yet. Look at how people wrote it off for the Vita yet Tearaway makes use of it all in unique ways that aren't just gimmicks. To write it off as pointless based solely on launch games is jumping the gun quite a bit because it's an afterthought to most developers, but that sure as hell doesn't mean it won't be of some use in games in the future. Whether or not it lives up to it, who knows but I think the light is a bigger gimmick than a new input on the controller.

Otherwise, I agree about the noise being louder than I expected but nowhere near the point of being a huge disappointment but I don't have mine sitting in an enclosed space since that's never the best place for it short of having nowhere else to put it. The light on the controller is definitely annoying and a waste so far, but the controller doesn't feel cheap to me at all nor does the case considering they at least tried to make it look appealing.

My battery life is far better than 4 hours and never interrupts gaming and the charging cord is probably the most absurd complaint on the list as if you needed just one more point to add regardless if it made sense or not. There's 2034763 ways to solve it and none of them are costly at all.

While you have some points, the way it was originally worded seemed like you were in it for more than just a genuine discussion as others have said and another of your posts just proved it.

So many commas in the OP, or lack thereof.
Opinions.

sorry for the formatting the ipad makes a mess of things
while they may seem like opinions they are my own personal experiences so far

The thread was not meant to be troll bait it seems to of brought out an army of them.

Thank you to all of those people who have posted their experiences....both consoles are great and will continue to look for a solution..I either have

1) 2 dud consoles
2) My hearing is over-sensitive
3) Australian weather is just shit
4) Ignorance is bliss..just suck it up

Dualshock 4 is the second greatest controller I have ever used, second only to the N64 controller. I can go a full "day", 8hrs and still not need a charge.

As for the console, well, 350 quid for the most powerful console on the planet? Corners cut shocker. Fans aint that bad.

Gonna have to disagree on both counts tbh.

Also, a 3 metre usb cable is like 2.99.

In what world is the N64 the best controller anyone's handled? You're even crazier than OP. Do you have no shame?

The design of the console itself is fine IMO. It's pretty much a modern day version of the PS2 console.

The design of the controller though is ugly -- doesn't look "Sony Official"; looks very 3rd party. It's a good controller nonetheless.

Complaints about battery life baffle me. Are you guys really playing regular 5+ hour sessions? That's not healthy.

When you're done playing, put the PS4 in standby mode and charge the controller. Then when you come back you've got a fully charged controller. Easy.

Also keep in mind the PS4 is really loud when it's installing from a disc. I was shocked by how loud it was when I first played Killzone, but noise level decreased dramatically after a while.

I've had Xbox One since launch and I have yet to change the battery on the controller an I've been gaming on it for hours at a time. PS4 batteries died in less than a day. It's almost as pathetic as the Wii U controller IMO.

I think for the money its a cracking console & pad, bought a 3 metre cable for £2 if i need to charge pad when playing but have never got to that, being able to charge the controller whilst the ps4 is on standby is excellent. PS4 doesnt seem noisy to me. love the controller & dont think it looks cheaply made or feel cheaply made. is this a wind up?

I agree actually but I really wouldn't call it controversial.

The PS4 rode the "Not being the Xbox One/Do the opposite of Microsoft" all the way from reveal to launch, with nothing else than "We still support used games!". When released I see disappointing hardware, lack of innovation and lack of games. Hopefully the upcoming titles can change things.

It's an ok console, but overall it's a disappointment imo.

Respectfully, i would like to read your thoughts on why the hardware was a disappointment.

Lack of games is subjective and could boil down to preferences, and like you said, with time that will change. But i can't see how you can call the ps4 hardware a disappointment. So would like to see what your thoughts are on that.

versus what? pc? xbox is worse hadware . innovation is kinect and voice command and games wise they are about on par when it comes to first year ... i can understand being dissapointed with next gen in general but ps4 in particular meeeh disagreee.

unless os and snap rock your boat

Sitting next to a XBOne the PS4 does look a bit cheap in terms of build quality. But then you turn it on and the UI is far slicker than the cluttered, unintuitive, clunky slideshow that is the XBOne UI. I'd rather take the better running console over the better looking one.

5-8 hours is a pretty normal session for me. When I play videogames, I like to get things done, so I set aside the time, usually late at night (10pm-4am), to play a videogame.

A lot of multiplat games doesn't even hit 1080p with a descent frame rate.

Thanks for posting OP. For someone who cancelled both pre-orders and has chosen to sit it out I found this a very interesting read.

Was surprised at the DS4 sticks flaking so quickly, is this widespread? I'm wary of drawing too much of a parallel between noise and reliability though. My launch 360 sounded like a wasp stuck in a hair-dryer, but it was my comparatively silent PS3 which croaked within 12 months.

I used the Xbox one's controller yesterday and I'm surprised that there aren't many people complaining about it. I tried playing killer instinct and I can't believe I'm saying this but the D-pad is even worse than the 360 D-pad, it clicks way too much. It feels like it's broken. Who's idea was that?

The analog sticks are too high and too loose, there was no need to make the stick higher or loosen them up from how the 360's sticks were. I tried playing battlefield 4 on the Xbox one and my aiming was so fucked up.

Then you have the bumpers. Feels like they don't click at all, I feel like I have to hold the controller in a weird way to get a decent feel on the bumpers.

I played battlefield on the ps4 about two hours later, it was like a completely different experience. I never expected this to be the case with these consoles. When the PS4 was announced I was thinking to myself "fuck I'm gonna have to try and deal with that shitty playstation controller again".

I think more people need to make noise about the new Xbox controller the same way people did when sony released the six axis. If we just accept a bad controller and try to adjust to it with time, Microsoft will think their controller is fine and doesn't need any adjustments when it actually needs some refinements.

The lifenof the controller battery depends on what your playing.. One of mine lasted 4-5hours one day.. other game total of about 9 before warning.

Ds4 easily the best controller made, imo. Console is slick and very slick with its sharp lines... definitely controversial your right. My opinion on the x1 is vastly different though.

My console is whisper quiet. Maybe i'm just used to the sound of my jet engine 60GB PS3, but with my PS4 when i first got it i genuinely thought it was faulty because it was so quiet, haha.

There's a lot of OS material that the touchpad can be used for and it can be ease of use... Your brain just isn't innovative enough to imagine ideas if the only thing you can muster up is how gimmicky it is. I already have 5 good uses for it that I would love to be implemented.

The touchpad is the part that makes the DS4 look off or "unofficial". It's also responsible for the share and options buttons being in terrible positions.

My only beef are the analogs and triggers. Analogs are smaller, shorter which translate to less precision since there is less available movement edge to edge, the convex w/ring design isnt as comfortable as just convex. The triggers feel too mushy and they are a tad bit too short.

I am not so sure that statement is accurate, but in order to not derail this thread, fair enough.

I disagree with OP with regard to the ds4. It's easily the best controller I have ever used, just beating the 360's controller. But opinions, and most of your gripes i cant comment on yet since i am using it with the ps4. But i my thumb sticks are fine, hopefully your's is not just a result of a bad batch. Been using the ds4 with the ps3 and it is a very good experience thus far. Can't comment on the actual ps4 itself since i get mine on thursday.

I have both consoles and I am only speaking from experiences with both consoles over the last couple of weeks
From a gaming point of view both consoles are great but there are aspects of the ps4 design which seemed very rushed or cheap and its been bugging the crap out of me if anyone else is having the same issues.

We are also lucky enough to have 2 ps4 consoles at our place and one xbone so it’s not related to a single faulty console.

TLDR VERSION
I hate the design of the ventilation on the ps4 and the ds4 feels like a fat ds3 with flaky bits and a crappy battery.

The Fans

The Xbone is whisper quite…its summer at the moment in Aus and we have had a couple of 35 degree days with high humidity and my house feels a little hot at times …in saying that I have not once heard the xbone fan kick in after hours of gameplay in this weather..i have to put my hand above the vent to check to see if the fan was working

As for the PS4 ……the First thing I noticed when I booted up the ps4 for the first time was the fan sounded exactly like the ps3 slim and once I started to game with it the fan started to creep up to the same audible levels of the ps3 and in some cases
It got quite loud (Killzone)….all 3 of our consoles had the same noise level and a mate who also got a ps4 commented that he could hear it over a pedestal fan that he had running in his room….which brings me to the next point

PS4 does not like being put in a cabinet

The PS4 does not like being placed in tv cabinets or entertainment units….which is where a majority of people would put them
I have my ps4 and xbone in an Ikea bookcase lied on its side..to give you an idea its basically one of these turned on its side
http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/50185483/

The TV sits on top and all my consoles sit in the bottom

The clearance above the consoles is about 35 to 40cm and at the rear there is around 30cm from the back of the console to the wall..and there is also a gap between the cabinet which air flows out of.I have an xbox 360 and ps3 in 2 of the boxes so I have a rough base to go off in terms of sound.

I have tried the xbone in this cabinet and I have also used in another rooms tv cabinet which has reduced room above the console which is one of these http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/S09927114/

It has the back plate removed as I got sick of running cords through a tiny hole

On both occasions I have not heard the console or noticed any excessive heat coming out of the location where its stored..the ps4 has also been in both locations and while its not as loud in the bigger ikea cabinet (have tried in both horizontal and vertical orientations) it sounds like a jet once it goes into a smaller space
Which is weird because the cabinet has ample space on the sides and at the rear (70cm wide 20cm high 50 cm deep).

The only way I have been able to reduce the noise is to pull the ps4 out of the cabinet and place it on a crate in the middle of the floor which is sort of crap….the furniture I own is certainly not the most exotic space restricting furniture for consoles and even the xbone which is as fat as an old VCR does not give off as much noise and it has even less space to work with.

Coming from 4 rrod xboxs and 2 YLOD ps3s I have made sure the choices in furniture are the best when it comes to having a cool environment for your gaming consoles

My Friend who also owns the ps4 has also realised he cant have it placed next to his tv as the heat from the rear of the TV makes his ps4 fan kick in or he cant have it in his entertainment cabinet as he has to turn off his satellite box as the heat from that also kicks in the fans.

The other ps4 in the house also has to be away from the tv and in a fully open area to remain at a low fan speed level and in when i tested it in the same spots the same issues came up.

I am pretty certain MS spent a crapload of money in designing cooling and cases to limit the risk of the same 360 rrod issues popping up again with the xbone but the ps4 just seems like a “She will be right mate” approach and simply copied the ps3 slim design and put a few extra holes in it…surely I'm not the only one with both consoles that have noticed how loud this thing is at times????

I understand the reason the ps4 does not have a massive quite fan is due to the PSU being integrated into the case but surely they must of realised how loud this thing is and how hot it gets and how most people are going to be putting this thing in entertainment cabinets with other electronic components?????

Which brings me to the other pet hate

The Controller

Yes the bigger controller Is better than the ds3 and to some people gives the xbox controller a run for its money but I want to point out 5 things that bug me about the controller you get in the box and why it feels cheap and rushed

1)      The short charging cord you get…..you want to play your ps4 straight away but your control is flat and must be charged so you have to move your whole couch/chair closer to the tv because the cable is so short….would a few extra feet really hurt??

2)      Those thumbsticks wear down pretty quick…I have not rubbing on them like a woman and her lady parts but after a week of gaming the corners of the thumbsticks have started to break away leaving the underlayer coming through??
I have a dualshock 2 that is linked up to my pc that has been used almost every day for the past 5 years and it has no signs of wear but the ds4 after a week starts to flake and fall apart??? Some great QC there

3)      The touch Pad….apart from being awkward to use my pad has started to come loose and rattle slightly when used
It really seems as if it was simply tacked onto ds3..im yet to see the benefit of having it on the control.

4)      That Blue light….while it was a choice to remove the camera to make the console cheaper its left a rather annoying
Light on the control that is only used properly if you have the camera add-on….they should of left the camera in or removed the light off the control and simply bundled the controllers with the lights with the cameras instead of giving everyone a light show which drains the battery. Which brings me to the final point

5)      Battery life of the ds4 is absolutely shocking ..some days it only lasts for 4 hours before I have to move the whole couch forward next to the tv to use the short charging cord to play the ps4….my xbone control I have not replaced the batteries in it once since release and it has extra motors in it compared to the 360 control.
Either it has the most crappy rechargeable battery internally or the blue light show is sucking all of the juice

All of the things they have added to the control have not improved my gaming experience at all.

If I used the new xbone control as an example the feedback through the triggers allows me greater feedback on forza where I can now feel when I am pushing the car to hard around a corner or I am braking too hard

Back over the other side of the fence…the only real innovation is the controller fits better in your hand
The mic/speaker , touchpad and flashing light have added nothing to my gaming experience and as a result of having these I have to put up with crap battery life and have to buy another charging cable so I don’t have to move my furniture around the loungeroom…my extra control I purchased did not even come with a charging cable..GG there.

Those are my 3 main issues I have with the ps4 and lead me to believe that MS spent a fair amount of money in controls cooling and case design and not very much on the internal pieces that run the console…while many people could not give a S### about fan noise and the ds4 bugged bits the build quality of the xbone and its component’s feels far superior than the ps4 at this time.

I would of laughed if someone told me that last generation but there are far too man rough edges around the ps4s design this time around that have me wondering if my ps4 will croak in the first couple or years.

Only time will tell….. So String me up or share your thoughts on my topic

Just curious, how do you fit your Xbox One into the cube? I'm also from Australia and have that exact same setup and the Xbox One doesn't fit...

I don't get it... Is it a rare case to have your PS4 be very silent compared to your PS3 slim?
Since I have them side by side and the PS4 can't be heard at all by me, even with the game disc running....
:/

Yea I never understood the hype for the PS4 but I do understand the hate for the XB1

Both are rushed but the steps that Sony took backwards compared to the PS3 makes me question what's going on like no 3D Blu Ray, HTPC/DLNA support, backwards compatibility, even regular Blu rays, etc. Instead they're trying to lure you in with paywalls like Music Unlimited and now require PSN for multiplayer. And throw in wobble gate, slow wifi (even compared to the XB1) poor vertical cooling, Vita remote play's lag, etc.

The DS4 controller looks like it took design lessons from the car made by Homer Simpson, and having an 8 hour battery life makes me want a smart phone inside it. And I won't lie when I read about Sony testing new stick placement but sticking with tradition for tradition's sake made me wonder what's going on considering every other controller has the left stick in the primary position.

I'll be there for the 2.0 or Slim version but until then they need to make a lot of improvements, and offer exclusive games I want to play other than Resogun. It'd also be great if 1080p and 60fps become the standard along with stable servers/OS (looking at you Battlefield 4)

Just the fact that i can put my headphones into the DS4, and not having it connected to my PS3 and/or TV, makes it the best controller ever.

But you complain about the charging cord for the (few) times that the controller is down?

Ok...

I don't think so.
