I am more than ok with thiTHEY ARE 15 YEARS OLD, PEOPLE. I'm sorry 15. That's just... no. I don't criticize the art itself, but no. I would not buy this game, if they were 15 years old.

So apparently you can't even see Ringabel's speedo outfit even through a friend summon, like you can with the other Japan only outfits. It was completely removed. :/

! ! !

disappointing.

They changed the 15 into a 18 and it's already fine for you? I don't get it.

I'm not that bothered, how many people can honestly say they'd have noticed if it wasn't for this thread? The game is freaking awesome.

Censorship imposed by governments are shit.

Censorship imposed by private business looking to appeal to more customers is just logic.

To be fair, if people never voiced their opinion, how would said business know if it really is appealing to a boarder customer base or alienating one?

Now i'm annoyed. Why change the age but still remove the innuendo? 18 and 19 year olds don't use sexual innuendo? Is it not acceptable for them to use it? It's stupid. Leave the text intact.

They are 18 now. Do you feel better about yourself? Are you more comfortable? Are you going to buy it now?

Good. That paedo shit in the Japanese version grossed me out when I played it.

I wish Japan would stop with the pervy moe otaku pandering path that it's been going down the last half decade or more.

Xenosaga 3's bizarre censorship of a certain cut-scene was less than logical, and actually rendered what was meant to be a serious, tense moment into something nearly incomprehensible and somewhat funny. All to get a T rating instead of just leaving the blood in for an M. I guess there's right and wrong ways to do it, but companies self-censoring themselves isn't always much preferable to government censorship.

The real tragedy in all this. :( I don't care if they throw frumpy potato sacks over every other costume that shows the ankles. Just leave the speedo in.

Uh what? You can be against censorship and be against the sexualization on underage children. This is not mutually exclusive.

Censorship is bad and just because it happens to something I don't like doesn't make it ok.
Exactly. I'm not one for censorship, but there's times where I completely understand the reasoning and accept why they did it. Good example would be Mugen Souls. That had an actual mini-game removed, meaning gameplay was taken out, but considering the context, it's makes perfect sense as to why the decision to remove it was made and I'm not going to argue that it had to be taken in order to bring the game here, even if I have no interest in the game itself before or after. Sometimes, cultural differences, either good or bad, result in having to change something to better fit the market/region.

I'll wait & see on the text changes, but it's more of S-E &/or Nintendo wanting to be safe & not wanting the media to have a field day on this, & again, keep in mind this applies for other countries as well, bringing up that DoA 3DS ban in Sweden example. In this case, it's more of seeing it from their stance on what'll happen to them if they chose to change nothing.

Now i'm annoyed. Why change the age but still remove the innuendo? 18 and 19 year olds don't use sexual innuendo? Is it not acceptable for them to use it? It's stupid. Leave the text intact.
This is probably the one thing that I have a slight debate on. I understand if the age was left alone but the text was changed, but if the age is already changed, it seems a bit weird to change the text as well, but again, I want to see the actual text comparisons first before I make a full judgement on the matter.

Ah, the classic "paedophile" card. How mature.

If these were clearly adult characters dressed in fetish gear, lingerie, and thongs, then fine. Whatever. It's still tacky, pandering, and tasteless, but there's a place for it. But these are 15 year olds (they look even younger in-game), and if someone finds seeing them dressed in that shit appealing, then yes, that person is pretty fucking creepy.

Wow. Localization modifying the game in any shape or form is inexcusable. The age and costumes stuff are bad as well but that one stings me harder.

I don't think you know what localization is...

Sounds like what you're looking for is a straight translation patch or something.

We don't know if the text has been altered for the North American version. This is based on the European game.

The violence argument doesn't hold up, violence against children is taboo and censored in most western video games as well, the over-sexualization of women is very common place in the western game industry so the "we're okay with violence but not sex wtf!!!!" really doesn't hold up.
It's been changed because it's children and that doesn't fly here, with good reason. This shit is wrong.

If you want to fight "censorship" pick your battles.

Maturity, bitches.
What kind of sexual innuendos did they get rid of? What's wrong with a bit of double entendre now and then?

I really wish people making claims that they're against "censorship" would understand the difference between that word and a private entity making decisions for self-moderation and regional changes in a mass market product.

I would just like to point out that changing Idea's costume from the front page is actually changing a plot point behind the costume existing in the first place in the form that it does, it's supposed to be a somewhat embarrasing costume to wear and that's actually explained why in the story (this is coming from someone who's pretty much 100%'d the game last year). Then again if they change a character completely (the old master) and everything he says in the game, they'll get it to work.

What I want to know is why it's okay for THE REST OF THE FUCKING WORLD and not NA?

Seriously. I love where I live but the puritanical bullshit sets me off.

Please answer that question. Why is it only people in North America have this crazy adversity to anything revealing about a woman's body?

Does it make more rape? More pedophiles? What?
What exactly is gained from this? Is it actually fucking protecting anyone??
I'll tell you right now that it isn't.

Was this something that the ESRB called them out on and were forced to change?

EDIT: I didn't realize this was for the Western world and not just NA when writing this.

Yes, I feel more comfortable. It's a kickass game, I want to buy, play and love it someday and I will gladly do just that. :) Them being 15 and being dressed like that just feels wrong.

But then they wouldn't be able to get outraged over underaged characters no longer wearing super skimpy clothing.

If you look at those original models and "paedo" doesn't come to mind... well I don't know what to tell you.

I don't know what "paedo" is, but what exactly do you want to tell me? The fact that I can understand the use of different art styles (Super Deformed, which goes back to the 70s) used within a game on a platform with limited specs? The fact that I can understand that and that its uses do NOT equate it to pedophilia bothers you? I believe that says way more about you than it does me.

Alrighty then.

Lame. Censoring games suck. Gratuitous violence is OK, but a little pixelated T&A is a big no no!

children's T&A is a big no no, how is this hard to understand?

Well, I guess you can't accuse the censorship of being one sided.

I'm more bugged by the age changes than the outfits, I'd rather there was no censorship but I would've probably avoided those outfits anyway unless the stats were crazy and they probably shouldn't have been in in the first place. But the age changes are a story change, I guess I need to see what actually happens in-game but relative to other RPGs out there it'd be kind of hard to excuse. Probably does imply innuendo IS there just toned down or shifted (there's some stuff that probably didn't translate well, then other areas where there's a ripe opportunity in English or other languages but not Japanese.)

But they aren't human. They barely resemble actual humans. I see them as cartoons imagined in a fantasy world in a video game. I can separate reality from fiction.

Good. Those original costumes are creepy. Babies in lingire. It's gross.

Bunch of you need to learn what "censorship" is, by the way. Hint: It's not a developer opting to put clothes on their own characters.

I'm not so much upset about the changes themselves, they seem pretty minor; I'm just upset that we won't get to play the same exact game. I hate discrepancies across localizations, even if they're minor. I think it's just my inner sperglord speaking, though.

If them being cartoons imagined in a fantasy world that barely resemble real humans divorces their design from any meaning then why did the designers come up with these skimpy, revealing outfits? You can't have it both ways, either the game isn't representational and so the aesthetic design is meaningless or else the game is, on some level representational (
hint: it is
) and there is meaning associated with designs.
