Wii U Games 2014

Look at 2013. At least two Directs every month except for December which had one. The bi-monthly pattern is a thing of the distant past (2012). We're making very educated guesses here. Not shooting blanks in the blue sky.

But the "main" Nintendo Directs are still only in the even numbered months. There's a Nintendo Direct at least once a month but the odd numbered months only have special Directs (Wii U Direct, Pokemon Direct, etc., the US/EU only Direct, etc.)

That said, I would still expect Nintendo to be funding more third party exclusives similar to Zelda Musou. Not big games, but these weird games that will flesh out the library more.

Most likely, although really I just want some more info on X and Bayonetta 2 right now, they have been pretty silent about it.

I assure you, precedence holds far more weight than people's irrationality and the resulting arguments they make based on almost nothing because of it. Substantial plot should be expected in a Xeno game, as much as one expects tight platforming in Mario, puzzles and dungeons in Zelda, a litany of powerups in Metroid, and so forth. Anyways, this part of the debate is pointless, because we already know there's going to be a meaty story in the game.

...Have you played Xenoblade, or Soma Bringer, for that matter? The above portion of your response strongly implies that you haven't. X is using Xenoblade as a base template in a lot of ways. From its battle system, to its UI, to the way its environments are crafted, to its collectibles, and by the looks of things, its quest system as well. If you had played Xenoblade, then you'd realize that you wouldn't have to touch a single hair on X's head to accommodate online multiplayer, and there would be no need to put a "focus" on it. The kind of quests the game had - the kind where you had to kill X number of certain animals, or retrieve Y number of whatever collectible, and so on - already lent itself well to a multiplayer experience. And those same quests almost certainly will be returning in X, except this time players will be able to join your game and take control of the characters that would normally be manned by an AI via an online connection. In fact, they've already made a game following that exact template; it's called Soma Bringer, and its co-op experience is the exact same as the single-player one. There is no avatar character, no character customization (besides equipment, jobs, and, optionally, colors), and no "multiplayer focus/content".

There is nothing, I repeat, nothing in those teasers that implies X follows any of the templates you've brought up, or any other besides the one they've already created themselves. Those who believe otherwise are severely misinformed and/or actively look for something to fear or be disappointed in. Simple as that.

Angry? I hope you aren't inferring that is my disposition regarding all of this. The game has enough strikes against it, and it doesn't need a bunch of people who have no clue what they're talking about scaring away prospective players with the misinformation they propagate. It's just annoying to encounter in every discussion pertaining to X. :/

Well alright then.

Anyway, never played Soma Bringer but played Xenoblade and I have enough steam saved screenshots to prove it haha. I listed those examples because they either sacrificed or accommodated features to put another on top, I can't exactly list anything for Xenoblade when it wasn't planned to have online.
I don't want to write a wall o' text on examples so imagine having the online work like Soma Bringer coop as that's what you seem to believe they will do in X. To me that would be the most asinine thing to do taking by how Xenoblade was built because of the bigger possibilities that exist for it. This isn't local coop with a friend you know you can relax and take your time playing the RPG with. Yet this would be a prime example of having story absolutely first while having online there as very minor side thing. Is this how they are going to it? Who knows.

On the speculatory side of you thinking online will be people joining other's "single player" and taking control of the AI. I personally doubt that, due to 3 points on the trailer. The first being that if you trust what the minimap is showing you can at least have a party total of 5, that seems quite excessive in managing things in battle when AI. The second being this thing Bottom left at the start there are 2 dudes running (watch the vid in 1080p to see they are carrying weapons as well) yet nada on the minimap? Lastly, I have only played Xenoblade but from gameplay I've seen of other Xenogames would this be the first one to use names in the HUD instead of an icon of the characters face? Could be a design choice but eh. None of these are anywhere near definite proof but I see quite a bit going against the idea.

Yeah I was talking to you but my bad! Wrong choice of words from me, annoyed would be the better word for it. I get you are trying to stop people from automatically getting disinterested because some random dude is bringing up the possibility of it being some "no story mmo/mh" but eh, as long as they aren't flat out lying and giving the impression it's confirmed those who would get disinterested by that are bound to read up, find or stumble upon this game later when we have actual solid info. By the way enough strikes against it? What are these you are referring to?

Oh, apparently that journalist is known for making shit up so I wouldn't hold my breath.

Yeah but no. I don't know from where it comes but the guy who tweeted is not known for being a bullshitter. He's even working on an indy game which will be announced soon (https://www.facebook.com/AnyArtsProduction?ref=stream) and I suspect it will, also, come to Wii U. Sure, the website he writes for did some shit in the past but it was always by one guy, another guy, a well known Fr journalist.

Asinine how, exactly? With this method, the online mode wouldn't be the least bit intrusive, would address complaints about how Xenoblade's AI wasn't as good as it should have been by having human players take command, and would require the least amount of work from Monolith in a game that no doubt demands a tremendous effort without even taking into account any sort of online element. No, this would be the best approach all things considered.

Is this how they are going to it? Who knows.

Everything I've seen tells me it conforms to Soma Bringer's (base) method of handling co-op, and I've yet to see any evidence of the contrary.

Here, there are four green diamonds, meaning four other human players. And the blue diamond in the center, hidden by one of the green ones, represents you.

The second being this thing Bottom left at the start there are 2 dudes running (watch the vid in 1080p to see they are carrying weapons as well) yet nada on the minimap?

That's because those are AI-controlled party members, which are not represented under the radar. This is also major evidence against there being any sort of character creation (the other being the fact that we've seen characters appear consistently throughout both teasers).

And I don't really see how five AIs would be particularly difficult to manage; it's not like you'd have direct control over them if this is like Xenoblade (and it is), and they handle themselves well enough. This is, of course, assuming there isn't a two AI member cap when playing solo (which could be the case, because we haven't seen more so far).

Lastly, I have only played Xenoblade but from gameplay I've seen of other Xenogames would this be the first one to use names in the HUD instead of an icon of the characters face?

We know the names of at least two Dolls in the game:

Inferno 01:

And インフェルノ, which translates to Inferno:

So yes, they are using names in this game (based on what's been shown- I don't know if there are going to be any UI tweaks in the final build of the game). It's also important to note that they seem to be hiding the characters' faces in the teasers, so having those faces appear in the boxes would give them away.

By the way enough strikes against it? What are these you are referring to?

I meant that it's going to have enough going against it, those two major things being that it's a niche JRPG being released in a contemporary market that evinces hostility towards anything not named "Tales of" or "Final Fantasy" and the fact that it's being released on the Wii U, which is in a total shithole.

Anyways, this is going to be my final response on the matter for today, as I'm very busy. If you have anything else to add, I'll respond to it sometime tonight or during the week, if I can.

With all your X talk you are making me re-watch the trailers.

Edit: Man, the music still get me. Most anticipated title of 2014!

This thread is why I don't care about all of the low sales and bomba threads. There's easily enough output from Nintendo themselves to justify my purchase, and if there are a few 3rd party games as well? Even better.

I already got it.. I have another 15 to spare.

Deus Ex. If you haven't played it, get it. I paid £14 for it on Amazon, and it's really a superb game. Finished it in 60 hours. I had days i played it for 8 hours (in two times due to the gamepad battery).

PS: It's also a good, enhanced port. And it comes from a dev that is likely to support the platform in the future. Unlike EA/Criterion (NFS:MW) or other devs that did some decent multiplats.

My wife has been talking about getting a Wii U. Two new Mario games to play are really tempting.

Then you should also look into games like Rayman Legends, Trine 2, Pikmin 3, Knytt, Giana Sisters, Nintendoland...

Those two things aren't connected, to me. Is there enough coming to justify my purchase? Definitely. It's more the quality than quantity that I'm interested in, but I definitely feel like Wii U will be worth it for me.

But bad sales and bomba affects what we'll get after this year, both from 3rd parties (who are already gone) and Nintendo (who may very well shift unannounced things in development like Metroid to the next console). It also reduces the eyes on Nintendo's IP, and affects the chance that they'll be successful in the future.

I personally can't ignore the sales. Doesn't mean I don't get hyped as fuck about Bayonetta 2, Smash and X, though.

More on topic, Yarn Yoshi is my sleeper pick for this year. Kirby's Epic Yarn was one of my top 10 games on the Wii, I loved that game. It shouldn't take that long to develop a Yoshi version, so I think we'll see it late this year. I trust GoodFeel. It's gonna be good.

If they don't plan much for online and design it in mind for playing with actual friends, it seems fine on it's own. If you throw the notion of random online players tagging along, having an actual side online mode would be better and I personally just see huge potential in that area. Otherwise what player is going to put up with tagging with random dude(s) online through a dialogue heavy JRPG.

It went woosh over my head that that's potentially it but can't be so sure, the other scene actually shows nothing on the minimap besides the player, despite there quite obviously being enemies around and a motionless "ally" of the intro dude.
Dunno what you mean by consistent character appearance, different ones show up in the 2nd one most interestingly a seemingly female version of the intro dude, same armor (pigtails girl also uses the same one) and the sword on which looks to transform into a rifle, we also see another rifle wielding person in with the walking by the mech scene.
Would seem bit boring to me to allow party members to equip anything and the armor visuals only having a difference between male/female if these were actual story characters.

With higher amount of players I can think of buffs, Item usage, who is being attacked and where they actually are if they can wonder off a bit when in battle, I'd see it as being harder to balance as well.

So yes, they are using names in this game (based on what's been shown- I don't know if there are going to be any UI tweaks in the final build of the game). It's also important to note that they seem to be hiding the characters' faces in the teasers, so having those faces appear in the boxes would give them away.

Don't think it's because of that exactly, I mean they showed Shulk look-a-like's face that gives more away than if I saw the face of new characters with no info on them.

I meant that it's going to have enough going against it, those two major things being that it's a niche JRPG being released in a contemporary market that evinces hostility towards anything not named "Tales of" or "Final Fantasy" and the fact that it's being released on the Wii U, which is in a total shithole.

Gotcha, though reception for the game it self from the trailers has been quite excellent from what I've seen other than the worrying about no single player. Haha.

Anyway, If there is a Jan direct I hope they release a new trailer.

So is this kinda considered the Wii U community thread these days? I tried to play Punch out! on the Wii U recently, the one we got for $2 back in april or may, and is it just me, or does the game lag a bit compared to the Nes release? I had ALOT of trouble just beating Soda Popinski because he was so fast, and I found that I had to iniate my dodge-manouvers before he even moved for me to have a chance, basically making the game more about chance than reflexing. Did anybody else play this and have a similar experience? And yeah, I tried it both on the TV and the Gamepad, and it was pretty hard on both (thought slightly easier on the TV I think).

Not really, but they seem to think it's better to have every GAF member that buys a new WiiU and has (generally the same) questions, open up a new topic every time, instead of having one general topic where people can talk about the system and pose questions. We're still in mourning over the locking of Andrew's "Just bought a WiiU, surprisingly there were no shortages" topic. I personally don't understand the logic behind it, but whatever. If you have a problem or a question, you should just open a new topic. This one is for the upcoming game line-up... though i'm sure someone will eventually answer your question.

What ozfunghi said, but for your Punch-Out!! question I'd recommend you the Wii U Virtual Console thread. (Can't answer it myself since I never played the NES original).

lol i remember when Nibris and Crossbeam studio's were claiming to pick up the gauntlet and provide the Wii with hardcore games none of the other devs were willing to create. Acebandage was always defending these guys on gamefaqs even when they had vaporware written all over... but he was young and naïve back then i guess (or is he still?).

Sadness
Thorn
Orb

Though i must say, Raid over the River for DS did look somewhat interesting from the little gameplay i saw.

Edit: Wait, is talking(/laughing) about Nibris bannable?

What I meant by it was despite all of the negative news that surrounds the console, I don't regret buying mine. But I think sales do count in a small way, if only because if it picked up then we might see a few more games appearing for it, and the worse the sales are the less likely we are to see more Wonderful 101s appear.

X was listed as 2014 in the last release calendar as well. That was in November or so? There was/is absolutely zero reason to worry at this point.

I can't give you any specifics, like the differences between playing with friends and strangers (if there are even any); I can only lay down a general outline of how things look like they work based on what I've seen so far. But at this point, the general consensus is that the basic nature of the multiplayer aspect of this game is drop-in/drop-out (or like Soma Bringer).

Alright, but here's a thing, why does the party HUD only show 4?

Those player status boxes only come up when you enter a fight. So that would mean player one through four are engaged in combat, while player five is off doing something else.

the other scene actually shows nothing on the minimap besides the player, despite there quite obviously being enemies around and a motionless "ally" of the intro dude.

Okay, this is a good observation, and, admittedly, I can't come up with anything to explain it for the time being. But those are unquestionably AI- handled characters in that .gif. If you watch the teaser frame by frame, you'll notice their positioning and running behind you is exactly the way the the AIs did in Xenoblade (and, of course, they don't show up on the radar, just like Xenoblade).

Yes, consistent character appearances. In the second teaser, we've had a total of one new character appearance. Here, look:

The main character:

In the first teaser:

He has black hair and a lock that sticks up in the air. He wields a sword in this one.

In the second teaser:

He's undergone a slight cosmetic change and is now a brunette with blonde streaks. That lock that sticks up is missing, too. He still wields a sword, and we've seen him carry a gun.

Red armor woman:

In the first teaser:

She has silver hair, and she gun/canon/whatever thing.

In the second teaser:

Same as the main character, she's undergone a slight cosmetic modification; she no longer has the same hair style, and now her hair is black (though, you have to squint to see it). She's now wielding - I don't know - a giant stake?

Pigtails girl:

In the first teaser:

She has... pigtails and dual wields what appear to be assault rifles.

In the second teaser:

She's identical in appearance to when she first appeared, except now she wields what red armor woman used to.

Heavy armor man:

In the first teaser:

The quality of the footage is terrible, and it's really dark in that scene, so it's hard to say what he looks like, exactly. What I know is there: heavy armor and a giant riffle of some sort.

In the second teaser:

It's hard to say what's changed because of the aforementioned reasons. He's still wearing heavy armor and appears to wield the same kind of gun we see the main character wield in the second teaser.

And this is the new character we see appear in the second teaser:

She has short, matted, and dirty blonde/brown hair, wears the same kind of armor the main character does, and wields the same sword, as well.

Don't think it's because of that exactly, I mean they showed Shulk look-a-like's face that gives more away than if I saw the face of new characters with no info on them.

Once again, this isn't something I can give you an exact and definite answer to. There could be a multitude of reasons why they don't want to show any faces. They could be still working on them (as you saw in the first teaser, those were placeholder hairstyles and colors), or they simply want to remain vague about what they look like due to the fact that these are teasers, which are unclear by nature (even if they already showed off Shul-look-a-like's face). I can't say for sure.

Why hasn't this theory/discovery been named after me yet. I am disappoint! :p

Sorry, haha. Didn't mean to steal any credit. Should we name it "D-e-f-intely five human players"? :p

I wanna go with "Thought Police Thesis of Five" Shortened to the "#woopwoop Theory" :p

Haha, you got it, buddy.

*There's something new I found going through the second teaser:

I've seen this teaser God-knows-how-many times before, and every single time I dismissed that thing as simple vegetation, but when I finally took the time to view things slowly, I realized that this thing might actually be moving. There aren't any trees, shrubs, or grass on the path, so it kinda sticks out there. It doesn't appear to be an enemy (no red diamond there), it's too far off to be an AI party member, and... it doesn't really look human (or even animal). Maybe it's a mini, humanoid robot? Or maybe, just maybe...

I'm just a wee bit serious. If you remember, I was the one throwing around theories about crash landing on an alien planet and all of that, so part of me does believe we might see alien locals at some point. But being completely serious, there's no way to really tell what that thing is.

I still think X is gonna have character creation. Just me.

Highly, highly doubtful. And if there is, there is nothing in the footage we saw that shows it.

How about the fact that the player character is a male in some shots, and a female in others?

...Because you're controlling different characters? I made a gigantic post up there detailing just that. C'mon, guys, there's only so many times I can go through this.

Oh I definitely agree with you there. I'm just not sure there'll be a megaton-heavy Direct this year like there was last year. No doubt we're gonna get a Direct this month, I'm just not too sure Nintendo will be dropping the bombs, because most of the games from last year's Direct still aren't out, and if they were planning on a Direct that was gonna announce a bunch of stuff, they would have saved the Hyrule Warriors reveal for then. Of course, I'd love to be wrong :)

I think it'd be cool if this month's Direct was focused on indies. Oh, and some release dates for their Q1/Q2 lineup would be fantastic, even if it's just the month of release.

It does look like, if the protagonist isn't customizable appearance-wise, that different characters can share the same weapon, so that would mean skills/arts are tied to the weapon rather than the character. You've got that silver haired woman with the same sword as the black-haired guy running in the first trailer. Or maybe each character has different arts for each weapon type. I'm inclined to think there'll be character creation, similar to some WRPGs I've played.

As for the 2014 lineup, 2014 will probably be the year I finally buy a downloadable/e-Shop/indie game for the WiiU, I look forward to trying some. Bare as the retail lineup may be, I've already made a point to be open minded and to see beyond genres and game styles, if it becomes an odyssey of trying out new Nintendo games beyond the typical franchises that I would try in the past, then so be it, I'll be having fun in the process ^_^ I'll enjoy seeing Donkey Kong and Bayonetta 2 side-by-side on my shelf, both with the Nintendo logo on them.

Good lord, people see online co-op in a JRPG, and all rational thought goes right out the fucking window.

You've got that silver haired woman with the same sword as the black-haired guy running in the first trailer.

The red armor woman never wielded a sword. In either teasers. I think you're mixed up.

If you've played every other Monolith RPG you already know it's not.

I'm starting to think there's no point in explaining it to them. They want to see what they're afraid of seeing rather than what's actually there. :/

In Xenoblade you could control directly anyone in your party if you switched leads. Could be the same here.

That's exactly what it is.

God dammit. So I bought 2 Wii Us at launch, one for my son and one for me. Long story short, I was getting divorced and they were moving out a few months down the line. Anyway, divorce took longer than expected. They move out yesterday. So my Wii U has been sat in its box all year. I unpack it, plug it in and it sits there flashing blue light at me. I should have unpacked and tested earlier I guess. Well pissed off because I wanted to use Wii U chat with my kid. Do i need to send it in? Never been used but obviously now out of warranty. Wondering the chances of the big N going easy on me....
Any advice GAF? And yeah, I know, I should have at least tested it when I first got it....
