Is it normal for one group to reveal NPD numbers relating to another group? Does each group get access to all the data for all sales, and then they can choose whatever they want to make public, even numbers for competitors?

If you pay for NPD you get all of NPD. Though you really aren't suppose to reveal anything but very basic information.

November:

Dead Rising 3: 212K
Forza Motorsport 5: 185-200K
Ryse: 185-200K

LTD:

Dead Rising 3: 738K
Forza Motorsport 5: 642-657K
Ryse: 616-631K
November 2013

270k
KSF

220k
DR3

200k
FM5
SOR

185k

100k
KNACK

So around 370,000 units for Knack and Killzone: Shadow Fall and around 620,000 for Dead Rising 3, Forza Motorsport 5 and Ryse: Son of Rome.

This would mean that in December Knack + Killzone: Shadow Fall sold around 229,000 units whereas the Xbox One trio did around 880,000.

Of course there is a certain margin of error because for example I counted 200k for both Forza 5 and Ryse while the range is 185k - 200k.

Edit: Now that I think about it, there were more Xbox One first or second party titles besides those 3?
Hmm...

Is Greenberg referring to 2013 or December with his numbers? I assumed 2013.

"Hardware sales of the Wii U were also positive with December 2013 marking its highest month for unit sales month so far," NPD analyst Liam Callahan noted. Guess having great games does sell hardware, huh?

What has been the best month for Wii U so far?

Not as big as I thought it would be (xbox sales), especially if Sony's statement is true that if you add the 2 months together they are leading.

that seems a bit nuts, shouldn't DR3 have charted if it really sold that much in December? I wonder if Greenberg is somehow including digital sales for first party titles

edit: nvm realized he meant LTD not just December

I don't know why the split around first-party vs third-party is surprising. The PS4 exclusives weren't very good. So people were obviously more likely to pick up third-party games with the PS4. Most people I know picked up Battlefield and Assassin's Creed and a few people bought NFS. On the Xbox, there was Forza and Dead Rising and even Ryse had it's fans. There's only so much money to go around, so if someone picks up Forza or Dead Rising, that's likely one third-party game they aren't getting.

Does anyone have DR2 launch numbers? I'm curious how much being an exclusive hurt the DR3 numbers; those are better numbers than I was expecting, though.

Haha, Greenberg, you card. You just posted that third party games sell more on PS4.

Huh? How?

We know a little bit about which games sold better from NPD order:

CoD, BF4, and JD'14 sold better on XBO in 2013. (The 3 best selling games of December). He doesn't mention Just Dance so we know it's not a complete list of games.

LEGO and Skylanders may have also sold better overall on XBO since they beat the PS4 versions in December. We know at least six 3rd party games sold better on XBO last month.

Color me surprised that the One pushed more software than the PS4. Being out of stock for most of the month was probably the big culprit there.

Oh, he may be referring to 2013 LTD with those figures. I'm not sure which is right.

I took them as ltd in US retail. All 3 will obviously be higher (hopefully much) with Europe and digital sales added in.

Also we can work out what zoo tycoon did roughly from Aaron's numbers but I'm in bed so haven't been bothered to work it out.

I wonder if there's any disparity in digital sales percentage due to the lingering distrust over the DRM backlash. I can't speak on it personally, because I limit my digital (with DRM) purchases, and have for years.

That means that these percent of US Bone owners bought them at retail, more considering digital:

Dead Rising 3: ~40%
Forza 5: ~36%
Ryse: ~34%

What are the usual percentages?

Because he gave total retail sales and total 1st/2nd party retail numbers.

A simple Total - 1st/2nd party gives us the numbers for third party

Sad that a mediocre Crytek game outsold these 3.

Eh, Bayonetta and MGR:R had some legs to them and went over a million. With rising on the PC, that figure will only increase (PC releases have very long legs).

Come back in a few months and see how ryse is selling.

Well we know that NFL fans are still mainly on Xbox. That answers that question from before.

There's a baseless stereotype we can have now: Xbox fans like football, PlayStations fans like basketball. :p

PS4/XB1 share of Just Dance and Skylanders sales was not that big.

Pretty good sales all around but the fact that december was still down 2% in spite of all of this is a bit worrying. This industry , despite all the hype right now is on the decline. The real question is how far down will it go , have we hit rock bottom or is it going to slide another 2% this year ?

I'm still hoping that XB1 sales slow down very quickly so the system gets a much needed price drop. Or a nice bundle deal, I don't expect such a thing until May or so but I'd love to see some good old fashioned SNES VS GENESIS style competition here. Right now the people buying either console probably decided to do so months ago and mostly are just following the brand - they owned a 360 so they are buying an XB1, they owned a PS3 so they are buying a ps4, etc.

Also interesting that xbox one owners are buying almost 3 games each- looks like 1 first party, 1 3rd party and 1 digital only game for each owner on average.

You do, of course, realize that Nintendo would be revealing combined numbers that are down year over year, which only continues a downward trend for their business. There is nothing for them to crow about for December, they might as well sit on the news until their quarterly financials.

If I was Iwata I would be delighted with WiiU selling more than 460 000 units for December tbh. I don't see a lot of people bringing up the fact that WiiU was going up against PS4, Xbone, their unreal marketing campaigns and extremely cheap PS360 bundles yet WiiU still managed to have it's best ever month.

People can compare WiiU hardware numbers against Gamecube and Wii all they want but in 2002 MS were no way as strong in the videogame industry as they are now and obviously Wii was a once in a lifetime 'fad' which will never be repeated by Nintendo.

Going on their current position in the market and it's current price of $299, people should expect WiiU to track behind Gamecube because MS have a much larger slice of the market.

I'm surprised at the game sales being higher on XB1 considering the console is $100 more.
Well, the 360 had a higher attach ratio, so it wouldn't surprise me if the trend continues this gen even if the PS4 manages to outsell it month to month (though I think January XBox One will again come out ahead).

I'm pretty surprised Greenberg gave actual Sony numbers, not just percentages. I think that's a first.

If it's LTD:

November:

Dead Rising 3: 212K
Forza Motorsport 5: 185-200K
Ryse: 185-200K

December:

Dead Rising 3: 314K (526K total)
Forza Motorsport 5: 257-272K (457K total)
Ryse: 231-246K (431K total).

Simple math:

PS4: Everything 4.2, exclusive 0.6 so 3rd party 3.6
XBO: Everything 4.8, exclusive 1.5 so 3rd party 3.3
