Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

Here you are:

Wow, those Palutena pictures... I find it hard to believe that they're real simply because I can't think of anywhere they could feasibly come from. They look like pictures that would be chosen for the site, but displayed on a 3DS.

On the other hand, her model is good. Like, really good. Like, distinctly better than her Uprising model. I pulled out the game to compare, and the face is extremely different - these shots aren't just the Uprising model superimposed onto a Smash 4 screen, that's for sure. If they're fake, a lot of effort was put into them.

She looks pretty legit. But if I've learned anything from Pokémon X & Y's launch, it's that people are really good at making fake 3DS images.

And calling real Pokemon fake. Case and point Greninja and chesnaught tho the latter was a complete wtf moment at first lol.

Let's not ruin another (possible) female character reveal please. Thanks.
No need to get seeeeeeeeeeeeeeerious. Sorry. lol
Nah, but seriously. That would be a fantastic addition to the roster.
To see the series receive more representation, especially after Uprising, would be swell.

This fact, as well as the fact that Sakurai DID manage to make Uprising pretty darn well, is why I still haven't given up hope for Smash 4 to be a competitive experience.

Most of the basic implications have already been covered in this thread. It's a big deal, but I don't think it needs its own thread. We don't want to drive the entirety of GAF crazy by posting new Smash threads every two seconds.

Okay, so the main one. There is some mechanic in play that allows a player to "trump" a player that's already grabbing a ledge. I see this meaning one of two things: either a Tether Recovery can "trump" an existing ledge-grabber (so Link uses his Clawshot, hands below the ledge even while Mario is on the ledge, and then pulls himself up, knocking Mario off) or a player in general can "trump" an existing grabber, either through just trying to grab it when they're no longer invincible or through some process involving their damage percentages - who knows.

Either way, it sounds pretty bad to me. Best case scenario, it's a buff specifically for Tether Recoveries, which certainly needed one. In that case, though, edgehogging becomes completely useless against characters with Tether Recoveries, as it would put you in a worse situation if you even tried. So that's bad. Worst case scenario, this applies to all situations of edgehogging, and effectively removes the mechanic. Which is really bad, as making grabbing the edge easy would not only extend characters' lifespan (after Brawl already did tremendously) but also remove much of the dynamic that makes the edges in Smash Bros. so good as game mechanics.

Most of the possibilities about the invincibility change have already been discussed in the last page, and I am of the opinion that it likely mostly means that characters that just hop onto the ledge from the stage (like for edgehogging) will have much less invincibility. Which is yet another reason to never edgehog again, and completely changes the dynamic at the ledge for the worse. But hey, we don't know that for sure yet so whatever.

The final bit about things no longer changing over 100% could really go either way. How it worked in earlier Smash Bros. was simple - below 100% you had better options from the ledge, and above 100% you had worse options. Nixing that distinction could easily mean that, again, the ledge is worsened as a mechanic - if it's too easy to get back up from the ledge, it becomes pretty moot. On the other hand, though, it would generally keep the mechanics of the game dependent on the player's skill and not on how much damage they have accumulated, which is a good thing. How this change pans out will depend on how the new singular ledge options are balanced.

Does the Palutena model look like the pictures that show on bottom screen during Uprising dialog? I can't remember what they look like, but someone with access to a 3DS should check.

Yes, the best case scenario would be similar to PM. The main difference would be that in PM the Tether-user is forced to jump up from the ledge if they pull up, putting them in a specific situation that can fairly easily be controlled and taken advantage of by the edgehogger. In the hypothetical Smash 4 scenario, the edgehogger would be the one put into a forced situation and put at the disadvantage, rendering edghogging useless and a bad option.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
The only thing keeping me from saying these pictures might be real is that none of them show her attacking anything.

I'm allowing myself to entertain the possibility that those are real.

If it's a fake, this is some next level shit.

This is the one that makes me lean toward it being a fake, actually. Her right cheek looks too "rough" for it to be real.

Looks about right for the 3DS if you ask me.

He also said damage determines you invisibility on ledge, since he didn't how long on certain percentages it's hard to tell but theory talk here he doesn't want you to run to the ledge and stop the recovery, he is making you put more thought into it, if a character can tether grab you can use those invisible frames to advantage depending on your dmg. So you can still edge hog without penalty you just need to time it right depending on how many invis frames you have. WOW Sakurai is making this technical.

This is the AR card for comparison purposes.

It's okay! Water under the bridge. Yes I would like Palutena even if I'm not a fan of Uprising since the character design is pretty nice.

Oh yeah, Luigi's down-taunt is now that tiny bit easier to hit. Still near impossible, though.

Apparent "leak" of Palutena. It's not confirmed at all so don't go hype.

Someone make a shaky gif of the NeoGAF symbol with the text [BELIEVE INTENSIFIES] already.

"Might be an assist trophy."

Don't you even fucking dare.
