Is Halo dying?

Now that Halo 4 has come and gone, it's probably safe to begin looking at the effect it has had on reviving what was pretty much Microsoft's best franchise. All eyes were on 343i as they took over the reigns from Bungie, and while I personally consider Halo 4 a success, considering the size of shoes it has to fill, I can't say the same about the state of the Halo franchise.

Pretty much every Halo fan who isn't a total newcomer to the series is eyeing Destiny right now, and there is consensus in the gaming press that Destiny will take over as the genre-defining FPS that Halo once was.

This has spawned countless discussions on the Halo forum, and every time people get defensive and take it personal. I understand why, because to many Halo is associated with buying an Xbox and getting into gaming generally (yes, kids who got Halo when it came out are in their 20s now). I do think 343i is awesome. I think they did a really great job with Halo 4. But sadly, I also believe that the most boring parts of Destiny will still be more fun than the best parts of Halo 5. I just can't muster any enthusiasm for a sequel to Halo 4, given that Destiny is on the horizon now.

It all depends on your definition of dying.

If you mean it will continue to decline in popularity till MS can no longer practically continue to fund the franchise, then yes, I think Halo 4 contributed to that. But if they really turn it around with Halo One (5/CE2/whatever), I think there's still a large enough amount of people still hoping to be able to turn it around.

I think it's certainly been overshadowed by call of duty and the fact that sci fi games are a little less enticing than "modern" games at the moment.

I think it's mostly from the fallout of bungie not developing anymore so 343 had to build their own new fan base.

Halo is a videogame franchise, not a biological organism. It cannot die.

Do you mean, "Is Halo getting less popular?" All you have to do is check recent sales figures and you will have an answer for yourself, lazy-ass.

Or do you mean, "Is Halo getting worse?" All you need to do is play the Halo games and you will have an answer for yourself, lazy-ass.

While I don't have any interest in Halo myself any more, I don't think it is fair to compare Halo 5 to Destiny when we know so little of one compared to the other. For all we know Halo 5 will come out and be amazing.

It should have ended with 3. I'll always have fond memories of staying up late at my friend's house playing 2.

You went too far on this part. We don't know anything about Halo 5, and Destiny isn't even out to say how much fun it is.

I don't think its dying. It certainly not as big of a deal as it was before, to me at least. Halo 2 convinced me I absolutely needed to get a 360 to play halo 3 when it comes out. Halo 4 didn't - I bet a lot of people feel similarly. All it takes it one great game and everyone will rush back to it, unless Destiny is earth-shattering.

What a crass and rude post, holy shit.

I think Halo is becoming less popular and I truly feel 343i didn't make a good enough impression with Halo 4 despite sales. It didn't sell me, that's for sure.

In general, future space marine shooters started going out of style after MW1. Modern war settings took over. Halo 5 won't change the downhill spiral.

I'm not sure that the franchise is dying or fading, but I personally got tired of it.

Loved Halo CE, bought an Xbox for it. Loved Halo 2, played it more than any other online game before it. Liked Halo 3, played it a good bit at launch, but my dorm played a lot of Smash Bros Melee so I played that and lost interest. Got Reach, couldn't finish the campaign because it didn't hook me and never really got into the multiplayer. Got Halo 4 and had even less interest. I think it was anomalous that I enjoyed CE and 2 so much since I'm not really a fan of shooters.

Regardless, I wouldn't really want to see the series die out, hopefully Halo 5 does well.

Halo 4 was a very divisive game which certainly drove few people away, but the IP is not quite dead just yet. I think 343 can make a great Halo game if they listened to feedback, I mean they did when they made he Turbo update for Halo 4 that removed few features that people hated about the multiplayer in Halo 4.

I am willing to give 343 another chance and I am pretty sure I am not alone in this.

It died after 3 to me. Reach seemed ok but at that point I had switched consoles and didn't look back. Heard the MP on 4 was atrocious and the stats told some stories. I'll see if I can find the thread with the numbers.

It's certainly a far less flexible IP compared to Call of Duty.

You're pretty much locked into an FPS with aliens. Their non-FPS off-shoots have landed with a flat thud.

Call of Duty has a LOT of freedom (WW2, modern, future, Zombies, space, dinosaurs, whatever), although Activision has yet to release any of these non-FPS CoD games they've supposedly have been working on for years.

Um, was the lazy-ass part maybe just a little unnecessary? I mean, maybe not bannable, but not exactly the line you want to walk right now. We're both juniors bro. One wrong step and we're gone forever. It's probably better to try to be polite as possible and contribute valuable comments instead of rude ones, ya know? :)

Halo 4 grossed US$220 million on its launch day and $300 million in its opening week. Yep, dead as a doornail.

For perspective, Halo 3 was $170 million on launch day.

Halo 4 was good enough that I'll give 343 one more chance to make Halo great again.

The announcement of 60 fps has me hoping they're paying attention to what was actually said about Halo 4's multiplayer and they can work on it.

pretty much the reason I own a PS4 right now instead of a One is about 50% Halo 4's fault. I don't like 343's vision of the mutliplayer, and I found their continuing wording and false promises even more off-putting.

'Just waits', and 'trust us'. They had a blue print laid out in front of them.
The entire studio was built to iterate on a franchise bungie was tired of working on.
Not re-invent the wheel.
