Oh daaaaaaaaaaaaaamn...I was wondering if the switch from pre rendered, well thought out segments to 3d open would mess with this. Now I'm officially worried as hell here.

As a fan of the 2D games I can't even say "I told you so" anymore. Now I'm just sad. This isn't good for anyone.
I love the 2D games, as well, but I also love LoS1. So it's not like the series can't work in 3D. It absolutely can, and with LoS1, it did work (for the most part, and outside of some balance issues, under-utilized mechanics, etc, which are to be expected from the new shot at 3D).

Really, how hard is it to make the 2D exploration CV games in 3D?

I dream with a Castlevania game that plays and looks and like Lara Croft and the Guardian of the Light.

But, damn hurts to read is a 6 was expecting better. Hope the reviewer is wrong.

Not sure why anyone expected anything better. Seems about the right score (going off of the first game and then thinking of what they were showing of this game so far), curious about what others will say.

The combat looks super fun, first of all. You'd get knocked out of combos in the first game too, if you went for them at the wrong time. Just have to play smart; risk/reward and such. Hate to say it, but it sounds like this guy just sucked at the game. Yeah, I went there.

Can't argue with the other stuff as I haven't played the game, but I can't imagine the camera being that terrible seeing as you can actually control it this time.

This new issue of GI has the first review of Castlavania Lords of Shadows 2 and they gave it a 6.

Here are the other reviews: (will update after)

Catlevania: LoS 2:
  • Claims nearly every attempt this game makes to "stray from its fundamental kill room formula ends in failure".
  • Reviewer loved the first game, said "Unfortunately this sequel is as fresh as a whiff of garlic breath".
  • Good new combat mechanics but enemies stun locking you out of combos from across the map while you fight with the camera.
  • Reviewer hates the modern setting, its filled with generic alley ways, factory levels.
  • Says there was one stealth segment that was the worst of its class. The more traditional Castlevania settings are better.
  • Says there is one great level with the toy maker, outside of that most of the game is just ground previously covered in the first game.
  • "This shambling monstrosity is composed of chunks from other, better games"

This bullshit again?
The first game got called out for using mechanics from other games and hence not being "fresh", now the 2nd game is not fresh because we already had this in the first? somehow implying that in hindsight the first was sort of fresh to begin with. lol

How the Hell? The game looks incredible. Everything I've seen looks very promising. I don't place a lot of value into reviews, but it's interesting to me that this game would receive such a low rating.

I was far from a big fan of LoS and I didn't expect much from this, so this review confirms a lot of what I thought from the gameplay videos. But it's one review only.

I really hope Mercury Steam will manage to get better reviews at other outlets, with all the hint hints that they will reboot Contra too...

Joe Juba reviewed the two that he mentioned. I'm not sure about the LoS2 review. I wouldn't be surprised if it were Dan or Tim as they're both huge fans of the original.

Thanks for the info. Can't say my opinion jives with Joe Juba's from these two reviews for sure.

Welp, maybe now Konami will give the franchise back to Igarashi so we can have good Castlevania games again. I need my metroidvania fix.

Iga can fuck right off, he very nearly ran the series into the ground. Keep him faaaaaaaaar away. I want another 2D Castlevania like Castlevania IV.

What little is in the OP makes it seem like personal preferences dragged down the score.
hmmm

Here is hoping this is one of those lol situations like the Bioshock Infinite 3/10 GS re-review

It's the same genre. Those are action games too.

LoS has much stronger adventure ties to it than the other two, and are made by a different studio.
While I do dislike their W101 review, it doesn't let me invalidate other reviews (action is very broad genre).

That said, a part of me did want this to fail.

Meh, I'll wait for the other reviews, since some of the points mentioned here were said about the first game too and that turned out excellent. (not that I care much, I'm day one no matter what)

He did run the series into the ground. The Metroidvania games are good but extremely repetitive with copy/paste environments, and the 3D attempts were even worse. I really don't want another one of those.

This actually happened? Mother of god.

Good thing I don't depend on silly scores and reviews and have my own mind to decide on such things. Still waiting for the PC pre-orders to start.

I wasn't a big fan of the first game, but I thought this one looked far better.

Hmm, not sure what to think. I'll wait and see what other reviews say.

I'll probably still end up buying it, though.

how could Mirror of Fate being better than this one, I mean, I can't. Need more reviewers impressions, twitter ones have been very good (But they've all critizised one very bad stealth section).

What does this mean?

You don't get to "I told you so" people who were clearly hyped for it regardless of how different it is from the 2D titles.

Epic issue XD

Yep, can't wait to read it while pinching off a loaf.

Yeah, that's true. I really shouldn't let my strong dislike of the series' new direction cloud my ability to see that other people might like it for other reasons.

Factories, why always factories?
Gaming is plagued with factories and sewers, hate those levels. Some games do it well though.
Ranting from an art design perspective.
