Call of Duty is annual, rotating between 3 devs w/ 3 year dev time, Sledgehammer 2014

Good news that they'll have 3 years to work on each game

Bad news Sledgehammer is developing the next one, I was really hoping Treyarch would be doing the next one.

After the travesty of MW3 MP, I expect SledgeHammer to make IW and Treyarch look like pros.
I also bet SledgeHammer to go back to WW1 or WW2 era. Yawn.

The worst kept secret in the industry, but have they announced they are making Modern Warfare 4 yet?

Sledgehammer basically saved MW3 from not releasing on time, they did 90% of the campaign in less than 12 months and IW only worked on the multiplayer with help from Raven.

It's a shame they were not able to give a good try at that 3rd person shooter they were working when they were called to save MW3.

I am in the minority around here and like most CoD releases. I really, really hated Ghosts multiplayer and was looking forward to seeing Treyarch do their thing with Black Ops 3 on the new consoles. Sucks to wait to see it, but they will have had 3 years to bake the game, so I expect it's going to be pretty good by CoD standards.

on the activision financial call just now

Developed by Sledgehammer confirmed.

I am shocked I didn't expect this to happen with the series sales decline.
I'm disappointed, am I the only one that realizes the IW COD's have been horrible and Treyarch has been making the superior games?

Think about it, Treyarch is always trying new things, bringing better ideas to the table. That's why Blops 1 & 2 > the last few IW games. I'll say it, I thought MW2 was a jump the shark moment, series didn't need to 'go there' so quickly after 4. If blops3 were to drop next year you would have seen a increase in sales. I'm hoping with this extra time, this means Treyarch. Making a next gen only game with a new engine. Something that doesn't have to be dumbed down for 360/ps3 or WiiU

It's good news for shareholders, though. Increase development time = supposedly increase quality. Increase quality = supposedly increase sales.

I imagine there'll be a bit of a 'brand refresh' before the next one comes out. They'll need to stop the decline in sales quickly.

Legitimately the best news I've heard all day! Now, if they take a hint from RESPAWN and ditch the SP portion and focus on the MP aspect, this could be the recovery the series needs to feel fresh and not rehashed year after year.

I know this comes up all the time, but, aren't people at all annoyed or just plain questioning of why they feel the urge/want/need what have you to buy COD again?

I mean, I love video gaming. I really think it is great. But even in my favorite genres and from my favorite anti-AAA devs, I would question my and their motivations if a game was coming out EVERY SINGLE YEAR and I had to keep paying 60 dollars for it.

What is happening here?

What does EA do now?

They have 2 devs working on Battlefield games: DICE and Visceral. Considering how popular the franchise is and EA putting MoH on hiatus, it's going to be Battlefield on a 2 year dev time rotating from DICE and Visceral.

What I want to see is if it's indeed true that Visceral is making Bad Company 3 or not.

Since some people are confused, basically (titles speculative):

2014: Modern Warfare 4 by Sledgehammer
2015: Black Ops 3 by Treyarch
2016: Ghosts 2 by Infinity Ward

Yeah well this sucks because Treyarch makes the best COD games. Now I have to wait until 2015 for Treyarch's COD games.

Because of Treyarch man, because of zombies, because I want to see what crazy thing they're adding this time. They put out Fun COD games. World at War was great, co-op campaign and introduction of zombies, we had vehicles, it was fun

Blops 1, everything MW2 wasn't and I loved it. More zombies, emblems, theater mode, new unlock system, interactive map.... And oh yeah, the dolphin dive

I can go on and on but I must go cook dinner

I'm still enjoy COD and play it often, I have no problem whatsoever to buy one each year as long it is a good one.

This seems like a good call after Ghost let down, they need to take time to make them good.

Erm.... No. They did the MP and made a mess of it, it was totally anti-sniper.

I some how doubt that Sledgehammer has been working on their COD for 3 years, so I think it will be Treyarch game that will be the 1st to benefit from this new time table.

Highly doubt it as they'll need to have good weapons or they will lose people in MP nowadays so 1960s era and onward is possible but nothing older.

Too bad this did not happen for MW2, that game given another 1 year of development (and good developer publisher relations) could of been something else.

What don't you like about Treyarch games?

They usually have some decent ideas and locales for their stories. The hit detection and net code is trash though. Probably because it was a mess when they branched off the IW engine.

For all the shit IW gets theirs is pretty spot on now but they lack the originality.

I think we're not going to see a BO3, I think that sub brand is now dead.

That's a big reason, indeed; I can't deal with those two things being garbage in a game that is pretty much all about the online component.

I mean, that alone would be an absolute deal breaker for me, but it's not just that, even. Treyarch to me just makes boring games. I played the shit out of MW1 and MW2, and now I'm addicted to Ghosts, whereas none of Treyarch's games lasted very long for me before I got bored of them. Even MW3, arguably the blandest COD made by IW, lasted me so much more time than anything signed by Treyarch.

What really makes Treyarch's games unappealing to me is how little variety there is. Pretty much every weapon within the same category feels the same, the perk balance is usually stale and offers very few class possibilities (all in the name of being competitive, not realizing that COD always had, and always should, revolve around fun), and after three games these guys still seem unable to come up with any relevant new perks to spice things up (unlike Infinity Ward). The end result to me is always a "been there, done that" feeling when playing Treyarch's games, and while that could be said about COD overall, at least Infinity Ward's products always seem to switch things around just enough to keep things interesting (really loving the new perks in Ghosts and new additions such as the Marksman Rifle weapon category).

Three games Treyarch has had to win me over; three chances to at least finally get the hit detection and netcode right, and they fucked up. I would have to be a fool to give them my money again.

I'm in the other camp, my favourites so far have been the IW games, well excluding Black Ops 2. My favourites in order are:

Modern Warfare 2
Modern Warfare
Black Ops 2 (Terrible SP)
Ghosts (Great SP)

My worst is World At War followed by Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops 1 was passable.

I hope you're right, I prefer modern weapons, I haven't liked a world war game since maybe Medal Of Honour 2.

I still do enjoy the CoD titles, and an extra year of development is always helpful for both programing and polish reasons. Still, with my preference of the Treyarch titles, it will be both good and bad to have that time break in between. Good because of burnout, bad because of distance in story progression.

I bought MW3 recently for cheap and played the SP...my god it's the exact same shit as MW2 with just different graphics. Gave me a headache after 30 mins. I can't believe so many folks buy this crap at full price.

Worse map design too, SledgeHammer said they designed it that way because they don't like campers, it was bollocks!
There was no verticality to it either, just rat runs and spawn kill fests.

"4" instead of 'for' eh?

I have a hard time believing that Glen Schofield's great ambition after leaving EA in the wake of creating a breakout hit (Dead Space) was to crank out sequels for a brand that is on the way to becoming AAA shovelware, same as Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with all of that. But I still think they make decent games.

But the compulsion with eSports is becoming too much. I don't know if David Vonderhaar is thinking it is key to maintaining longevity with the series but it is ruining their map design and MP features.

And fuck that two-round Domination. So glad it is back to normal now. The entire reason I didn't play BO2 for much length of time is that the two-round Domination ruined the mode.

It will be interesting to see what new things Sledge can bring to the table, I guess it is hard to tell what their contribution was to MP for MW3 and due to time constraints it was probably a case of fill in the missing parts of the COD template, not 'how about if we add this feature'.

They originally planned to make a third person Call Of Duty and even started making it before being roped in to help IW, I wonder if that's still the plan?

I hope Sledgehammer comes back to that 3rd person CoD title they were going to do before they sent to work on MW3

edit: ^glad I wasn't the only one that remembered that rumor too

They might as well just start calling them based on the year they come out. It's basically a sports franchise now anyway.

Call of Duty 2014

So, Sledgehammer this year, Treyarch does Black Ops 3 in 2015, and Infinity Ward/Raven/Neversoft makes Ghosts 2 in 2016? I hope this extra year given to each developer really adds some awesome stuff.
edit: Yeah, I remember that rumor as well! It sounded pretty interesting!

"How can we fix Call of Duty?"
"Let's add a third developer to the rotation."
"How will that help?"
"I have no idea what franchise stagnation is."

I think you'll get your wish, it would certainly shake up the formula.

An extra year of dev time for this franchise is great news. Hopefully we'll see the fruit of that extra time with the next Treyarch game.

More dev time is always a good time, but unless they innovate heavily, CoD will not last another 5 years.
BF 4, as much of a mess as it is, has won market-share. Titanfall will be a heavy hitter.

BF4 sold less then BF3 though

Kind of a double edged sword. Each team gets more time for development, but we're are still getting 1 game a year, which doesn't solve the franchise fatigue issue.

If you had told me we would be getting 1 COD every 3 years, then I would have been a lot happier.

Fuck do CoD developers do for three years

I can only imagine Infinity Ward's current studio as a network of hip neo-cubicles adorned with big ass American flags and cardboard cutouts of explosions, lost in a skunk-flavored haze (with just a hint of bacon and brownie scents in the mix), and the only discernible noise from the fog being incomprehensible tirades after lost matches of Smash Bros.

"What the shit guys shouldn't you be working"

"We finished three months ago bro"

"What about DLC?"

"I just fucking told you"

Guess it's going to be 2015 for us until a Treyarch CoD. Oh well, not bothering me much. I'm glad I skipped on Ghosts, from what I've heard around here its horrible.

Its funny because everywhere (excluding gaf) people are moaning about how shit cod is. But I know for a fact these people will allways buy it regardless.

I am suprised its not Treyarch developing it this year though.

It's not terrible, but it isn't great. : /
Also leveling up in multiplayer takes FOREVER.

got a source about the market share thing? I'm interested in reading about that
