13y/o convinces parents to buy him GTA V using Power Point

Fantastapotamus

Wrong about commas, wrong about everything
I mean....I played GTA 3 when I was 13 y/o. I played Doom when I was like 10 (all without my parents knowing). And look where I am today!! *cough*
Anyway, it would be pretty hypocritical if I were like "Wow, awfull parents right here!"

Depends on the kid, the environement, the parents etc.

My response:
"Why was your focus on the sex and clubs and not the role of murder in the gameplay?"
Either this kid is trying to hide that or doesn't think murder is as big of a problem as sex workers and strip clubs. Both of those would make me say no.

I'd also tell him to cite his sources.

Honestly if he's mature enough to make such a Powerpoint I don't think there's a problem with him getting GTAV.

I'd have gone with this approach:

If my kid is mature enough to create a convincing power point, that kid is mature enough to know what a video game is and how it is separate from reality.

I would buy the game for my kid and monitor the playing for the first little bit and watch closely for behavioral changes.

If everything checks out then I have no problems letting that kid own/play games as they see fit.

I was watching rated R movies at 6 and playing M rated games at 7 or so once I found out about them through my friends. I think Half life was my first M game.

Sex is worse than violence here in 'Murica bro.

Maybe he knew his parents would have more issue with the sex and clubs than they would with the violence?

He sold them a bunch of bullshit lol. Pinky promise not to play the campaign, and the violence and swearing totally isn't in the multiplayer!

I don't get the big deal, honestly. Im blinded by bias(since i played Carmageddon at 7 years etc) and have yet to see a conclusive study on how much/in which way the games actually change behavior.

"So I am warning you, if it's a no, I will beg non-stop."

I would say no, the parents did not do the right thing.

given the time he took to create the presentation. he either is a convincing SOB or responsible. given that he did create it parents did okay with it. now if he goes back and plays the SP then they should cut the disc and he can't play it anymore (y)

willing to bet first thing this kid does is visit the stripclub.
certain female twitch streamers are living proof of this fact ;)

I'd say no to the kid because his grammar was bad. If you're going to make a presentation, then I am going to look at the presentation. D-, you fail. "i have" is bullshit; "I have" is the way.

If the kid can grasp the difference between fantasy/illusion and reality, then he is probably of sound mind to experience the game. I think I was 12 when GTA III came out, and my parents grilled me on what the game depicted and to justify why none of that should be done in the real world.
I also played it with Gameshark so I could do the Vigilante levels with infinite time, for I played the game as if I were an undercover cop.

I mean if you think hes mature enough sure. My sister and i werent 18 when we played sa and were mature enough to get "it".

I played GTA3 when I was like 11 and all the other GTA games since then. Looking back, I guess it's fine for a teenager to play those games, but GTA now is much much worse. For some reason I feel like I didn't hear fuck in GTA3 or Vice City but it was rampant in San Andreas and then on out.

So I wouldn't buy SA/4/5 for a kid. Definitely not. But yeah, it's up to you how you rear yours.
Mature enough to present it intelligently? Most likely mature enough to play the game.

Age is never the issue, maturity is.
agreed, but age still has to have some sort of ceiling for things like this.

My son was 14 when he talked me into getting him GTAV for his 360 (I already owned and played it myself on PS4 so I'm well aware of the content). I'm not so old that I can't remember being 14, and let's be honest here, I know my son better than the ESRB do.

Contrary to popular belief it didn't ruin his life or turn him into a hateful psycho. He had some fun for a week then moved on with his life. Probably doesn't even remember he owns it. Can't get him off Counter-Strike or Minecraft long enough in his free time to play single player games.

I'm terribly sorry if this post triggers any of you.

If i was the parent i would buy him the game. Why? Because after something like this, i would be 100% sure that my child is intelligent enough to handle whatever the game will throw at him.

Also, i played Doom when i was 13 and i am not a murderer now and don't even think i was intelligent enough to make something like this back then.

His number 1 reason should have been that he's old enough to go online and look at some fucking weird pornography

I'm less concerned that a thirteen year old might be playing GTA, and more concerned that a thirteen year old is making PowerPoint presentations.

You've got your entire life to squander sitting in dreary rooms pretending like a bunch of canned graphics you threw into a slideshow somehow justify your existence to a room full of people who probably couldn't care less. PowerPoint should be AO+.

thats a swanky presentation, would have rewarded him with a game for sure, just not GTA V

edit: its worth noting that kids have been growing up with computers and technology from day 1 now, a presentation doesn't showcase maturity for me. and with the internet all it could have took was a simple google search "how can i convince my parents to buy me GTA V" and reading up on other people's experiences etc.

Yeah I got vice city for pc when I was 11 (borrowed a friends copy, no chance my parents would buy it for me)... Those early ps2 games didn't have f bombs or tits. GTA V is a million times more "mature" than those ps2 titles.

This kid is more than likely mature enough to play the game. If he can pretty maturely put together a Power Point presentation he can probably play GTAV.

I played GTA3 when I was 14 so I always find it tough to fault kids for wanting to play this stuff, but turns out I was mature enough to play it at the time.

Its just a game, let him play it if he wants it.

Of course it's just a game, but any kid that young who plays GTAV needs to understand that and a lot of kids don't. At all. I know of some parents who bought their 9 year old kid GTA V (first mistake, too young) and the kid promptly went to school and without getting into specifics said some stupid shit he heard on GTA V and got himself in trouble.

Some kids absolutely should not play this game, but it is up to the parents to realize if their kid can handle it or not.
