13y/o convinces parents to buy him GTA V using Power Point

He should have just had one slide that said...

"I will go to the hospital afterwards and apologize to all the hookers/thugs/druglords that I had injured in some way during my endeavors."

I agree with others; once I read the part about him bugging me for eternity if he didn't get his way, I would've closed the slides and said "No". Also, failure to capitalize "I" when referring to one's self.

Yeah, I don't see a problem with kids playing GTA.

Same. I was playing 3 at the exact same age, actually.

V is mostly enjoyable when you understand all of the references, so the campaign is probably not going to be that much fun for him -- it will be the driving around stuff.

Not sure what people are afraid of, honestly. It feeds into that narrative that games are somehow to blame for things

That's interesting. It shows the kid was prepared to work for it at the very least. My step son plays GTA, and he did so when he was 13/14. I had no problem with this, as we all deemed him responsible enough to play it. He understands right and wrong, and the morality in GTA is pretty clear cut for the most part. You are a bad guy, but it's ok to be a bad guy in a game.

It really is down to the parents to decide. The rating is a guideline for parents, and an obligation for stores. It is not a set in stone definition of when a person is mature enough or not. There are kinds under 18 that are mature enough, and18 year olds who are not!

Yeah, this is an indicator of a young man mature and thoughtful enough to actually handle at least some of the game.

I don't believe that all thirteen-year-olds are alike and I believe that if parents spend enough time talking to and paying attention to their own children, they'll be able to make a judgment about which games those children are ready to play instead of having to rely on a rating and a GameStop employee.

Kid seems smart and mature from that. If I was the parent, I'd allow him to buy the game but I'd also warn him that it would be taken away if he does certain things (ie using the usual obscenities online, I wouldn't tolerate that).

I also like that he is honest enough about the contents of the game. Plenty of kids try to take advantage of their parents when it comes to that.

I let my 7 year old play the driving bits of the game. It still caused issues when he accidentally stumbled into the strip club when my back was turned.

A+ for effort but I don't think I'd let him get it. Also not a fan of the promise to beg ad infinitum if they say no.

It's funny to think that when I was 10 I had Ghost and Goblins banned in my household because my mom found out the main villain's name was The Devil and his sidekick's name was Satan.

Despite fighting against them, my mother was worried this would turn me into a Satan worshiper.

its a fucking game man. when i was 13 i was already watching porn and smoking and watch rated R movies.

hot shit!

It's something like that 90% of boys aged 12 have watched porn, and I bet the majority of 13 year olds watch violent movies.

Honestly, I am not concerned about GTA5 for a 13-year old. What does concern me is the whole situation about sex ed in schools. Or the lack off. Or the abstinence education. That shit is down right crazy. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0jQz6jqQS0 )

Solid effort but I would still smack it down hard. Sorry kid, you are a 13 year old. No matter how mature and adult you think you are, you are still 13 years old. ;)

It's crazy how many people here are saying that the parents should not get GTA for this kid. Do you remember when you were 13?!! Just go back and look at your old photos to refresh your memory. :)

As I said in the other thread, I would certainly have said no.

Mature enough to present it intelligently? Most likely mature enough to play the game.

Age is never the issue, maturity is.

Oh well, in that case, if he's mature, why not give him a driving license whilst you're at it? Oh and let him buy alcohol too because age isn't the issue if he's mature, right?

Things are age-restricted for valid reasons.

13 is too young for that game, but a few years old might be ok.

I was doing way more technical shit for my respective era at the age of 8. This isn't the least bit impressive.

Video Games = Driver's License
Video Games = Alcohol

Why not give him some meth too?

Video Games = Meth

GTA is on the mild side of what the average 13 year old who's grown up with the internet has been exposed to.

If this fails he can always save up chore money for PSN cards and buy it digitally.

Things are age restricted for a reason. As a parent, I'm all for making decisions based on knowing your child, but to simply fob it off as "age is never the issue" is ridiculous.

Things are age-restricted for valid reasons.

What "valid reasons"? The whole thing is subjective. I've met 10 year olds who are more "mature" that some 21 year olds that I know...

Sure, it has to be parent's decision, but 13 year old me (like most kids that age) was dealing with stuff that's waaay more dangerous than GTA and somehow I survived.

If my son wanted to demonstrate his maturity to handle M rated video games, I would need at minimum a 500 word analysis of the major narrative themes of Pikmin and the way they're represented mechanically.

In this house, we are scholars, not hucksters.

So did they buy it for him?

Off-topic: how do I make a thread on neogaf? Says I don't have permission on my account. Do I need to reach a certain post count or something?

You need to present a convincing powerpoint to the mods.

I did this shit to get my mom to get wifi so I could get Xbox live. It was a little easier because it was a win win for both of us.

Thankfully I had / have cool parents who new that 'material' like this would not have a negative effect on me. Having said that, the violent games back in my day were a lot less realistic.

I was watching stuff like Robocop at the age of 9 or 10 lol.

Nice try though nipper. 10/10 for effort.

This. I'd have no problem with my kids playing violent games once they knew the difference between virtual and reality.

I'd have told him to piss off as soon as I saw that slide which basically says if he doesn't get his own way he'll just pester them constantly. That is guaranteed to lose my kids any argument.
This. It really didn't need to go any further than that. Nice effort, though.lol

How can he expect to convince his parents with sloppy power point work like this? The text does not respect the margins, ffs!

also he mentioned a guy playing 3 days to complete the story, the part he promised he would not play

yeah, because other humans decided it

why do you think age of consent is different in every state and even countries. Why 16 year olds can legally drink in Mexico, and it's probably the same or younger in other countries yet 21 here

The parents can do what they want, if they think the kid's ready for it and they know better than the ratings...

That said, I would have made sure to appreciate and compliment the work and effort that went into this, but asked for possible alternatives and bought him an age-appropriate game of his choosing instead.

While also making sure to point out the mistakes in the slides and hoping to see that kind of engagement for his future school work, because I'm an asshole like that.

I mean, if I had a kid and they do this I'd let them. Especially since they're buying it with their own money.

He's also obviously aware of all the extreme stuff in the campaign/story anyway, so it's not like it's new to him. I didn't click the link, so I think if the parents bought it they're good. if not, they still are because they're parenting him and don't want him playing that. Normally I wouldn't advocate getting it for a kid but the fact of the matter is that it just isn't new to them.

After a presentation like that I would told him no until he was able to make a presentation that was perfect as far as everything related to style, orthography, etc.
If he's passionate enough to make a powerpoint, he's clearly passionate enough to make it with proper style.

It's baffling yeah, even more considering that this probably is the most hardcore gaming site on the internet.

Also, a good decision depends on the maturity of the child, not his age.
