2009 - PlayStation 3's Third Year

I'd just like to add that I finally joined the PS3 owner's club a few days ago when I received one for a late Christmas gift. I got the Japanese white 80GB model that came with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. So far I have picked up Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank Future, Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan for games and Casino Royale Special Edition as well as Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut for Blu-ray movies.

So far I am extremely pleased with the PS3. I already owned a Xbox 360 and a Wii, but now that I own a PS3 I really feel discovered what I was missing out on. The games I have got so far are all really great and high quality. I'll probably only be using my PS3 for exclusive releases, but so far there are more than enough great exclusives to justify a purchase and I am really looking forward to the games in 2009.

Once I finish the titles I have already I intend to go out and purchase Valkyria, White Knght Chronicles and possibly Little Big Planet. I have heard a lot of complaints about the platforming elements that worry me, so I really hope a demo of the game is released at some point.

Anyway, I just wanted to gush a little about my newly found PS3 love! It's great to finally own this magnificent piece of hardware.

If you're in Japan, try to get the Dual Shock / LBP bundle. It essentially makes the game cost about 2000 yen, which is a bargain three times over. The Japanese disc has 100% English support (including the Stephen Fry VOs), by the way.

If you're REALLY hesitant to pick it up & are in Tokyo, PM me. You can probably talk me in to lending it to you for a week or two.

2009 looks really good for PS3, but Jesus Christ, I weep for the future of art direction in games. There are some seriously dull looking games that may otherwise play well. Thought I suppose art design doesn't rank high on a lot of people's list of demands.

what odds motorstorm 3?

evo studios seem to be one of these rare dev's who can pump out titles while keeping quality amazingly high.

pacific rift is AMAZING ... and from the making of videos the devs seem like they have alot of ideas yet realized.

loving this game so much.

Nah, Pacific Rift is going to be a great base for DLC for a while. I'd bet that the DLC attach rate is going to be higher for them on this game because user satisfaction is going to be higher overall.

I'd love to see the original MS's tracks available, for example.

I sold my PS3 earlier this year, but I would buy another one if they dropped the price. The fact that you can buy a 360 for half the price of a PS3 is just crazy.

Come on, Sony, give us a price drop!

I'm really looking forward to playing WKC and Killzone 2, but does anyone believe that GT5, God of War III and MAG are going to be out in 2009?? i've been disappointed too many times this generation by Sony's inability to get games out when the market expects them to believe that I will be playing those games by this time next year.

(Yeah, this game is probably not all that amazing, but it has Ar Tonelico characters and is released by NISA which means it will most likely have dual audio so I'll buy it anyway... day 1!)

I work in Tokyo and if there isn't a demo out by the time I finish these other titles I might take you up on that offer. Is the bundle you are talking about for the console? I already got the GT5:p / Dual Shock / White 80GB bundle as a present, so I won't be needing that. I looked around the other day and saw plenty of places selling used copies of LBP for around 3500 - 4000 Yen already, so by the time I get around to it I wouldn't be surprised if I was able to find the game for around half that price. I'm willing to try anything around the 2000 - 2500 Yen area. Right now I am spending most of my gaming time on Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan (awesome) and Uncharted (very awesome), though.

Wouldn't surprise me. Disgaea 3 was a "bigger" IP in a similar situation and they priced it at that. On the other hand, X-edge might have been more expensive to licence because of all the companies involved (that's why most thought we wouldn't see a localization at all). I'm sure there will be some LE for me to splurge on though!

Heh, true enough. I dunno, I was watching some SotC secrets vids(really cool actually, making me replay the game) and listening to the soundtrack. I would have expected some sort of teaser or tech demo from them at this point(considering that they do that pretty often).

I think the best hope for it being unveiled before next years E3 is for Sony to hold a conference specifically for the game. Which is entirely possible since they seem to recognize how popular Team ICO games are, at least with the hardcore gaming community (which would be the ones to pay attention to such a conference).

I hope no one minds me using this as my "official PS3 thread", but I have a question.

I just got home and finally got my PS3 hooked up in HD (HDMI connection on a LG 24" LCD with max resolution of 1920x1200) and set up my console to display in 1080p. I played Uncharted for a bit, and other than a few jaggies, it looked quite amazing and even better than it did in SD. Next I put in Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan, and according to the back of the box the game only supports 1080p. It initially displayed in a tiny window with huge black borders. When I stretched out the image to fit the entire monitor, the game looked like of blurry.

Does the PS3 not upscale at all? I am just wondering because I had my 360 set to 1080p and I never seemed to have any problems with any games since they all seemed to be upscaling properly. Is there some setting I need to mess with to get the PS3 to upscale or does such a function not exist?

The PS3 will not upscale games on its own, upscaled 1080p support is on a game by game basis.

Damn that is too bad. I even tried setting the system resolution to a max of 720p, but that didn't really improve anything. RGG3 still looks great, it is just a little blurry in 720p when stretched out to fit a 1200p native resolution monitor.

I'm kind of with you on this one.

The PS3 is turning into my personal Sega Saturn in a way though. Not in the bad way, just that I just gravitate toward it and use it for a ton of things. Sony should kind of embrace it's 3rd place standing and use it to really open things up for developers big and small.

Off to try some of the PSN games I missed.

I wonder how closely SCE is working with Tecmo on the game. I bet the Sony suits would love to put out something very Gears-ish but displaying a clear advantage in graphical muscle.

It's obviously inspired by GoW, but it's actually somewhat unique. The tower you're fighting through is "alive", so your cover system is popping in and out while you're working through the tower.

http://uk.playstation.com/games-med...-forward-to-most-on-PlayStation-in-2009/????/

What are you looking forward to most on PlayStation in 2009?

Games industry figures reveal what they’re looking forward to most in the coming year.

"The most important thing for us as a company in the very short term is for us to start making money. This is a pledge that was made last March and is something that we are still very much on target to achieve. Once we have achieved this, I think it will be a very exciting time for PlayStation. Once we have alleviated that specific pressure, we can move forward at a rate of knots. 2009 promises to be a very exciting year for PS3, with blockbuster titles such as Heavy Rain and Killzone 2 coming out, whilst we have the music and video download service becoming available towards the end of the year. PSP will continue to prosper and sell in incredible numbers, with some great games coming out, which will take full advantage of the new enhanced screen. We have built our reputation over the years on great entertainment, and innovation and 2009 will be a prime example of PlayStation at its very best."
David Reeves, President, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe

"2009 will be the year of big, exclusive PS3 titles. Just to name a few, the year will start with the much anticipated launch of Killzone 2, followed by a fresh, new take on the superhero/anti-hero open sandbox genre inFamous, a mind-bending thriller Heavy Rain, a massive 256 player simultaneous online shooter MAG, an augmented reality, virtual pet in your room experience EyePet, and some more big titles that we have not even announced yet. On PSP, we have new titles and innovations that will connect and expand the PlayStation experiences."
Shuhei Yoshida, President, SCEE Worldwide Studios

"What I'm really looking forward to most is probably Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion - a massive game for me. I've been a Tekken fan since the very first one, so I desperately want to get my hands on that."
Simon Woodroffe, Creative Director, Midway

“Resident Evil 5, hopefully a continuation of a fantastic horror franchise. Resi 4 really set the benchmark for a third person shooter as well as a dark adult survival horror that avoided the clunky mechanics of that genre.”
Jason Wilson, Creative Director, Concept Team, SCE Cambridge Studio

"After a couple of years developing it, it's got to be Killzone 2 coming out on PS3 [laughs]."
Hermen Hulst, Managing Director, Guerrilla Games

"I'm most looking forward to seeing what developers do with destructible environments in 2009. That to me is really, really exciting."
Noah R. Heller, Senior Producer, Call Of Duty: World At War

"PlayStation Network being bolstered by some of the innovative new titles that I've seen in the works for online release, as well as some of the under wraps stuff for Blu-ray of course."
Simon O'Brien, Art Director, Evolution Studios

“Whatever the PixelJunk team (Q-Games) do next. I love their style.”
Steven Tattersall, Principal Programmer, PlayTV, SCE Cambridge

"I haven't seen too much of the games of 2009, but Killzone 2 looks to be shaping up well."
Phil McDonnell, Head of Console Division, Konami

"There are two titles that I'm getting all sweaty-palmed about. The first is Tim Schafer's Brutal Legend - I adore Schafer's games. He's made six games and they've all been absolutely genius. I've got no reason to believe that Brutal Legend isn't going to continue that solid gold run of quality. The second is Nobi Nobi Boy, Keita Takahashi's follow-up to Katamari Damacy and its sequels. Katamari hit all the right notes for me, I think it's an amazing, brilliant piece of game design, one of the best I've ever played. So clever, so much fun, and a concept you can take in so many directions. And the scale in the first game - from rolling up rice cakes and thumb tacks at the start, to ending up rolling up entire continents at the end, was just breathtaking. Whatever Nobi Nobi Boy turns out to be, I have no doubt it'll be fresh, original, and new, and those are the three rarest qualities in commercially designed games. "
Jed Ashforth, Game Director, Download Content, Evolution Studios

"Large scale MMOs coming to PLAYSTATION 3 – with innovative business and service models."
Phil Harrison, President, Infogrames

"I am ever hopeful that Final Fantasy XIII will be released in 2009. Hopefully it can match the incredible quality of FFVII on PlayStation 2."
Damian Hosen, Head of Design, SCE London Studio

"Home: if it lives up to expectations it could be a defining moment in the industry."
Sean Brennan, Managing Director, Bethesda Softworks Europe

"I'm really hoping that 2009 carries on where 2008 left off, with new franchises and high quality sequels for existing series. I'm incredibly excited about Resident Evil 5 as it looks like it's shaping up to be even better than Resi 4, which is my favourite game of all time. I'm also really excited to get my hands on Killzone 2 and, towards the end of the year, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. There are a few games that I'm keeping my eye on with keen interest, namely Ghostbusters, Aliens: Colonial Marines and Heavy Rain. If those games fulfil their potential, 2009 will be a brilliant year for PS3 owners."
Kevin Mason, Principal Designer, SingStar, SCE London Studio

"What I've seen of Resident Evil 5, so far, has got me salivating. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the Resident Evil team tackle the challenges that they've had from other developers that have released competing titles in a genre that they made popular. I'm hoping that they reclaim the top spot in the survival horror genre."
Ron Festejo, Creative Director, SCE London Studio

"Of course I can't wait for the consumer reactions to EyePet. The team have really been working hard and the results are really impressive. Killzone 2 is looking really nice too; I can't wait to see how well they've implemented it. In 2008 I loved the increase in downloads for titles, as it helped developers maintain the life of their games; I hope that we will see even more download content coming in 2009."
Mark Lintott, Technical Manager on EyePet, SCE London Studio

"I'm really looking forward to seeing what Street Fighter IV does - it'll be fun to see what they've brought to the next generation and what they've done new."
Shaun Himmerick, Executive Producer, Midway

"It's a tough choice, and it's between Killzone 2 and Heavy Rain. Having played both I can say they both look staggering. I think I'll go with Heavy Rain though, as it's such a cinematic experience that's pushing the boundaries in both visual quality and interactive storytelling. Quantic Dream's attention to detail never fails to surprise me."
Phil Gaskell, Senior Producer, PlayStation Network

“Aside from going online for the first time in Killzone 2, I think it has to be God of War 3. If it is anywhere near as good as its predecessors, we should be in for a real treat. For me, there have been few more satisfying gaming experiences than dishing out vengeance in the uniquely brutal way that only Kratos can. I really can't wait to see who's made him angry this time...!”
Tom Jones, Lead Artist, Killzone 2, SCE Cambridge Studio

"I’m excited to see God of War III as it should be nothing short of epic. Generally, it is nice to see game designers and artists coming to the spotlight now that our systems are so powerful."
Tim Ernst, Producer, Alpha Protocol, Sega

"For 2009, I’m looking forward to playing all the new downloadable content for MotorStorm Pacific Rift – we have some awesome new tracks and more content than ever before – all soon to be announced."
Andy Gahan, Development Manager Download Content, Evolution Studios

"I’m most looking forward to the coming instalments of PlayStation series that haven’t seen a true next generation debut – namely God of War and Final Fantasy. Everything I’ve seen on the new Final Fantasy games has looked fantastic, and I feel faint when I think of the potential of a PS3 God of War game."
Gavin Carter, Lead Producer, Fallout 3, Bethesda Game Studios

I do feel that 09 is going to be a great year for Playstation.

1) because of the awesome lineup of exclusives etc.
2) as far as I recall, there isn't a lot of 360 exclusives in 09 that fans are excitied about (ODST comes to mind), maybe theres going to be announcements in GDC or something

Exclusives I'm looking forward to:
Must Buys:
Killzone 2
Heavy Rain
God of War 3

Maybe:
Uncharted 2
Yakuza 3
FFVXIII
Massive Action Game
Infamous

I'm pretty ignorant of what's on the horizon as I've been swamped with my current games and backlog so there may be a few games that I'll get hyped for once I learn more but so far so good.

Does anyone remember what that one game was that was announced back when the PS3 was first announced(before Sony said every game was on a BD)? All I remember is that it was said to be the "first game on a blu-ray" and I think in the trailer the main character was playing a guitar, not sure though. I also beleive it was from Konami, again, not sure though.

Wow, Reeves not saying something stupid, for once. Heh.
