$99 New 3DS Black Friday Deal

I'm curious about all this IPS business. This my Animal Crossing HHD n3DS I purchased last year. What kind of screens do I have?

Well from all reports online it seems like there are no IPS at all in the $99 batch of n3ds. With every previous model release there were reports of people getting IPS screens fairly soon afterward. There are still 0 reported cases and this handhelds been out for days.

My guess is they probably got rid of whichever manufacturer they were sourcing the IPS from finally.

Or they had a secondary source that was exclusively TN, and decided to shove all those screens on their 99 black Friday model.

Of these two theories, I am more inclined to think it is the latter. They didn't do any chip shrinkage or chip consolidation that we know of to warrant a price drop, so something has got to give so that they at least maintain some margin, and it is most likely the screens.

I wish they would just follow the lead of Sony and have an amazing IPS LED Backlit LCD screen like the Vita 2000, but they clearly are not intent of having some sort of quality that is in line with modern LCD screens for color accuracy, display lag, latency, brightness, etc.

Ah I meant something like blaarg SNES still has no sound. I know you can inject games if you have the means.

Ninjhax does work on 11 whatever (the ones these have in the box) I think. I wanted one for improved homebrew that the old 3ds doesn't allow.

Blaarg snes didn't have sound initially but it has had it for months now.

I don't think that's true, would love to be proven wrong.

Edit: If you mean using Ninjhax on an older 3DS and then using that 3DS to hack the new one, then yes. But I don't think Cubic Ninja by itself is enough to hack version 11 without an already hacked second unit.

Looks like it works by itself? I'm gonna give it a go when mine shows up.

Ah. I read somewhere that it was a bug with the new 3ds units.

Anybody's Amazon order STILL haven't shipped?

Mine was supposed to ship out on the 25th. Paid for one-day shipping. It's been saying since I ordered it "will arrive on Monday" so i really hope it ships out tomorrow.

I couldn't tell on my XL until I installed a homebrew app that told me they were TN. I guess it's really not easy to tell unless you're an expert or very familiar with screen types, or you have the two side by side.

That's why I wouldn't trust anyone on ebay claiming their unit is IPS unless they show proof.

Unrelated - but sort of:

I had a Majora's XL that was IPS/top TN/bottom, traded it in for the red XL (ended up same screen configuration as Majoras); as I loved the red: My issues with the XL, the hinge just is floppy and the red started to change paint texture from finger oils over time (became shiny near the buttons). The Animal Crossing small released and I traded in and have had that one. It's a dual TN. The smaller hinge is completely sturdy, no wiggle. At all.

That's the only plus (plus I love the smaller PPI/form factor and face plates).

Having had IPS and TN, there are far more cons to TN. The colors are washed out, the 3D shifts more and is way worse creating a screen shift that was apparent on the OLD XL. It's just ugly looking. The lack of contrast mutes textures and bump maps - when you've used the IPS you notice it easily.

The IPS screens are more colorful, hold a better 3D effect, display more contrast. The only con, to me: crushed blacks.

Long story short, I missed IPS so much that I finally ordered a guaranteed Mario bundle off EBay. The seller stated it was new and only powered on to display the dual IPS for the pics of the listing. I'll know if they are lying based on the activity log when it arrives. It was $245, but worth it because I love my 3DS and have over 120 retail releases for it + eshop and ambassador games. Favorite Nintendo handheld/system, to me.

Ultimately, I think IPS on 3DS makes a huge difference and was worth it, to me. Anyone who says you can't tell right away, or they aren't that different is wrong. See the older N3DS GAF IPS/TN thread (which I was a part of).

Either way, 3DS is a great system with a lot of stellar, overlooked titles.

For me, yeah, it is hard to tell. So thank you for your help!

Yeah that "foggy" effect that happens when it's turned sideways looks very TN-esque -- that's the "washout" that indicates a TN screen. However, it's worth noting that a lot of tests are done with the pre-installed "black" theme in the background to sort of make other images pop a bit more and reduce how much light is giving off on the screen, and IIRC some of the initial tests when the screen differences were being discovered seemed to standardize at brightness level 3, with no auto brightness or power saver enabled. The image on an IPS screen should remain relatively recognizable even at a steep angle.

EDIT: just realized you had the black theme already. my bad.

The one 3DS I had with an IPS screen had really bad ghosting. This TN I have is the first one for me where there's basically near zero ghosting whatsoever. IPS is nice but the trade off here (specifically in my situation, not in general IPS vs TN) is no contest, the ghosting was terribly bothersome.

Then why does it say this on Plailect's guide (considered by virtually everyone to be the best guide for hacking 3DS):

If you are between 11.0.0 and 11.2.0, you must follow this guide to downgrade your NFIRM using one of the methods at the bottom of this page to directly dump and restore your NAND.

It says the only two ways to downgrade from 11 are hardmod or through DSiWare.

My wife's $99 white is my 7th 3ds... I can honestly say that unless I'm looking for it, it doesn't bother me when I played on any of the TN screens.

Unless you've seen the difference in person, or you really have to have the best version of everything, it's not going to bother most people.

Unless you get one of the really bad TN screens that just look blue and seem to have issues with 3d mode.

The new Nintendo 3DS System Transfer Guide that GAF made is over here. I highly recommend it for people who have bought the newer system!

Homebrew is not the same as downgrade/cfw via pialect's guide. Not sure if ninja hax was patches completely or not, but I know not all games have been.

Right, my bad. I just assumed his goal was to install CFW (A9LH + Luma). If he just wants to run some homebrew I guess Ninjahax could work.

And I think you quoted the wrong post when meaning to reply to me.

Yeah, saw this earlier, would've likely saved me A LOT of trouble earlier had I caught this on time. Luckily I managed to get everything sorted out seemingly and things are good now with my SD Card and data as a whole.

Here was my solution:

If you have SD Card issues when transferring, Nintendo themselves recommend you back-up your data (which I already did), and download the SD Card Formatter.

https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/

Click on either of the blue buttons near the bottom depending on your PC, and once your data is backed up in a separate folder, delete all data left on the card, then use the formatter and once opened, click "Option", then change "FORMAT TYPE" from "QUICK" to "FULL (OverWrite)".

Then hit "Format" and after it takes quite a bit of time (depending on card size), put all your data back in the card, then with the New 3DS being off, put in the microSD card, then boot it up, and if you had the same issue as me, you'll right away see the transfer screen where after it reconnects to the internet, it'll prompt the DSiWare transfer from the microSD back to the system (if you chose to back that up beforehand).

I hope that helps anyone who faced the issue I did.

HOW DO I KEEP THIS THING CLEAN?! My hands keep smudging it, even after I wash them thoroughly, and when I tried to wipe some dust off with a microfiber cloth and water the screen got smudged more.

I JUST WANT TO KEEP MY CONSOLE IN GOOD CONDITION FOR ONCE

For what it's worth, I just tested a couple of things on my New 3DS XL using two different microSD cards. My 3DS is running custom firmware (arm9loaderhax + Luma) and both cards had the exact same contents on them before the test. Also both cards perform similarly when reading and writing data on PC and in my phone, so the difference is not card speed.

With 64GB Kingston Class 10 card:
Boot time : 11.23 seconds
Homebrew Launcher: 10.96 seconds

With 128GB Samsung EVO Select card:
Boot time: 16.77 seconds
Homebrew Launcer: 12.92 seconds

I also noticed lag/pausing while navigating the home menu on the 128GB card.

I read before of people reporting similar issues on 3DS with cards larger than 64GB, but I wanted to test it myself to be sure. I don't know if this is only the case with custom firmware or with all systems.

Bottom line: I don't recommend using a card larger than 64GB with the 3DS, unless you don't mind slower boot times and hiccups in home menu.

I don't even have that. Zero movement on the slider thing :-/

I'm guessing they're waiting for more stock to fulfill the orders, but if it's not shipped by Weds or Thurs I'll be inquiring. They have a tendency of canceling orders and not notifying you.

Is it normal for the top panel to be a tiny bit wobbly when in the 45 degree position?

Seems to be that way. My current black one I just got does it, and the white one I had that came in the Pokémon bundle did too.

Seems to be a little bit of wobble at any of the 3 angles

Every 3DS I've ever owned (one OG, three XLs, one newXL) has been that way. It's fine. Eternally bothersome, but completely fine lol.

Checked my Majora's newXL and I think I actually have the good screens? If I don't, I certainly don't have the "bad bad" ones. Not like it would change a thing, but all this hubbub had me curious to check. :o

As much as I play my 3DS....this IPS vs. TN war is just silly. People are growing gray hairs for 240p? The screen still looks bad in comparison to just about every other device out there. Ya'll are fighting for last place.

The TN/IPS thing gets blown out of proportion. I've seen both first-hand, and while the IPS clearly produces fuller colors (as expected), the viewing angles are a non-issue on the TN. This is not the kind of difference you'd have seen between a MacBook and MacBook Pro back in the day.

240p is the gold standard for Virtual Console games :P

Your line of reasoning doesn't apply to everyone, and your attitude is condescending. Just because the only available options are varying degrees of bad doesn't mean some people don't want to get the least bad ones of the bunch, especially when they love the system and the games on it and plan to hold on to their systems for years and years to come.

Despite its flaws, the New 3DS is very special to me (and it's my favorite system of the current AND past generations combined), because not only does it have a fantastic library of exclusive games, but also perfect, near-perfect and better-than-original (in the case of Sega/M2) ports of 8 and 16 bit and arcade classics, in portable form. And for someone like me who absolutely loves auto-stereoscopic 3D, and seeing that the Switch doesn't have that (nor does any other system for that matter), it makes me all the more inclined to try my damnedest to procure the best version of this hardware possible, because I will be cherishing it for years and years after its no longer in retail or supported.

Even if you don't care for 3D, but are a gamer and a collector who doesn't sell off their games and system the day a successor is released, then the 3DS is the last of the DS-line and that makes it special and something a lot of gamers will hold on to, since we know Switch will not be backwards compatible.

For people that bought online from Walmart, is your order still ''processing"?

Nope, mine shipped out Friday, and it'll be here Tuesday. That's with Value shipping too.

Only part of my order that hasn't shipped yet is the Micro SD card, but that's for my wife's New 3DS (she bought the Mario bundle)

Question GAF. So do I need CFW or Ninjahax to unlock the region, so I can play Japanese 3DS games. I intend to mostly play some Japanese games with English patches on the 3DS (eg Dragon Quest Monsters)

Mine actually arrived today but I keep getting an error when I connect to the internet to try and do an system transfer. Course that's when I noticed my XL probably has the IPS and the new one I got doesn't.

Maybe you don't care but it's not silly. There's a reason exactly 0 phones these days are made with TN screens. Also your post is basically false equivalence, the post.

This is false. Viewing angles and ghosting are a huge issue. C'mon.

Pikmin are doing their work. According to the guide I should be able to swap SD cards but I'm feeling paranoid about it. Pikmin don't fail me now.
