Activision to demonstrate next-gen rendering tech at GDC

Did a search and didn't see anything...deport me if old.

Next gen COD. Hnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggg

Activision Blizzard will host a presentation to discuss next-generation character rendering at the Game Developers Conference in March.

Jorge Jimenez, real-time graphics R&D man at Activision Blizzard, will lead the 60-minute presentation, titled 'Photorealistic Eyes Rendering and Deformation', sharing his advanced techniques for "creating photo-realistic characters for next-generation games and hardware".

Jimenez will "show high-quality next-generation shading driven with a plausible game rig", says the official show schedule, as he discusses Activision's techniques for subsurface scattering rendering, eye shading, anti-aliasing, depth of field, and film grain.

You can get a sneak peek at Jimenez's work on his blog, where he frequently shares remarkably realistic-looking examples of high-end real-time character rendering.

The below is from his 2009 paper on subsurface scattering: http://www.iryoku.com/publications

Most intriguing. I wonder if they are aiming to deliver the kind of fidelity portrayed in the screenshot above allied with 60fps.

Whenever you see cool videos of faces they always end up rendering some Footballer or Basketball player. When it comes to any other genre they are all poorly textured like a virtual John Malkovich.

For comical effect, do note that the image (in the original article) is not 720p. Perhaps they're still aiming to be sub-hd to deliver that kind of visual fidelity at 60fps.

I hope Karak doesn't come into this thread.

Cool, now I'll get the chance to really look into the eyes of the anynomous soldiers when I stab them in the neck or shoot them in the gut.

I'm kind of shocked Activision has a centralised R&D team. I always thought of them as a corporate publisher who saw an iron curtain between studios and the publisher.

Seems like this will be an extension of his Siggraph talk from 2012. http://www.iryoku.com/blog

I've heard of Jorge Jimenez's name over the years regarding rendering.

didn't he also try to work for an MLAA or FXAA or custom AA solution for the 360 a few years ago?

This is not gonna be CoD tech. If it is, color me surprised. This kind of detail at 60fps in an arcade twitch shooter, I just don't see it. Nevermind that CoD assets aren't usually that good. I suppose it's possible at least during the campaign, but I really doubt it.

Aw yeah, I loves me some next gen tech demos.

Robo, do you not find "tech demos" to be utterly pointless given they allude to grand promises yet the reality and illusion only perhaps meet nearly at the end of the console's life cycle? Would you not rather see "actual and in-development" games ecompassing these specific technological advancements so that if there is a change, it perhaps may not be as drastic (Mass Effect 1 is a good example)?

But they can get EVEN MORE if they stay sub-720p, which makes it preferable.
Sub 720p and even 720p would make a lot of the minute detail added more difficult to see. I'm expecting a lot of 1080p games next gen, although not CoD. Targeting 60fps would make sense if the left CoD at 720p but less than that is insane.
