Adam Boyes is Leaving Playstation - Returning to Game Dev

I never knew he was in game development prior to Sony...what did he work on?

Good luck to him. I think it's a loss for Sony, as he was one of the only truly non-corporate, fun faces of the PlayStation brand at that level. Shu being the only other one.

Bittersweet because he seemed to do a fantastic job at playstation and I enjoyed his public appearances. He just seems like a great guy.

However, he's now going to go and make games, which is a very, very cool thing. The more good people making games, the better. It would have been really sad if he left the industry. Glad he's still in it! I'll definitely pay attention and can't wait to see what games he'll help make.

BOYES!

Thank you for giving us the GOAT E3 press conference section Adam, and of course for all your hard work behind the scenes. Looking forward to what's next.

Seriously, why are some people trying to read too much into this? Can't a guy just want to do something different that gets him more excited? If there were issues, he would be going for a similar job not a high risk career move to make an independent game.

Good luck to him as a move like this takes a lot of guts. I am sure if it doesn't work out, he will be able to go back to a job like this in a couple of years with the experience he has gained at Sony.

Wonder if there's any weird corporate politics going on in Sony right now.

All the names I've seen leaving lately have been ones associated with supporting niche games on the PlayStation platform. Be it getting a bunch of Indies onto the Vita and PS4, #JRPGVita, and #BuildingTheList - Along with stuff like getting the Yakuza series localized, or stuff like Shenmue 3 and FF7R.

Gio Corsi next probably? ShooterStation 4 incoming.

Oh get real.

Dang, first Nick Sutner and now Adam Boyes. Is SONY becoming arrogant SONY again?

That's what I'm wondering. All these guys leaving were ones who supported niche games. Wonder if they're being edged out for those initiatives rather than focusing on more mainstream things with higher profits.

I mean, the only thing Sony gets out of funding Yakuza localizations and expensive JRPG remakes is goodwill. The PS4 has already won - The board doesn't care about goodwill anymore (if ever), they care about quarterly profits to show off to investors.

Let's just keep an eye on Gio Corsi, if he makes any announcement any time soon, I'm jumping ship.

I'm not sure Adam Boyes was focused into niche games and indies (Shahid Ahmad was for sure). From LinkedIn, he was more into big partnership it seems.

Oversees Publisher Relations, Developer Relations, Portfolio Strategy, Financial Strategy, Partner Alliance, and 3rd Party Production team, driving them to record revenue and profitability numbers consistently year over year
- Transformed SCEA's approach to publisher & developer outreach, support, and marketing to ensure that we embrace a "partner first" mentality, which resulted in record developer and publisher partnerships
- Built strong strategic relationships with key Publishers including Electronic Arts, Activision,
Ubisoft, Take Two, Warner Bros, Disney Interactive, Square Enix, Capcom, Namco Bandai, Konami, and many more
- Spearheaded industry changing 3rd party partnerships with best-in-class IPs like Destiny, Call of Duty, Batman, Assassin's Creed, Star Wars: Battlefront, Street Fighter, Disney Infinity, Final Fantasy, and many more

- Doubled revenue in less than three years by focusing on content and partnerships that drove both hardware purchase and software attach rate
- Built a reinforced process that added rigorous forecasting, metrics, analytics, and measurable deliverables to executing on successful partnerships

Oh get real.

If you want to talk "Real", the reality is that people in high level corporate positions get nudged out all the time when people above them and investors decide they're not driving profits enough - Of course they never get fired and everything's smooth and on the best terms possible because otherwise you get things like #FucKonami and #SonsOfKojima

I'm just saying that him and Shahid may have been encouraged to resign from Sony for their main focus being on supporting niche products rather than more profitable endeavors like securing exclusive DLC for Modern Near-Future Shooter 2016. It's just the reality of how corporations are run.

Edit:

@Jarod I see. In that case I partially retract some of what I said. Must have confused him with someone else.

Gonna keep on eye on where Corsi's career at Sony goes though.

Good luck to him, hopefully whoever succeeds him does just as well.

Im sure hes in a position in life where Sony need him more than he needs Sony so why not - its a ballsy move and for that Ill remain jealous.

If he joins an existing Indie developer thats quite a connected person to have around.

Thats very sad to hear.

I'm not totally fan of his tendency to make jokes and go off script during press conferences. But he seems really genuine and likeable. A loss for Sony, to be sure.

That is one massive leap.

Boyes was partially focused on getting big third party deals anyway.

wish you all the best Adam...

We live in an age where crazy is a norm, it’s best to live your life and follow your dreams, tomorrow is never promised...

It really sucks to see Adam go, because over the last few years he's been so instrumental with the third party deals PS4 is known for: Destiny, Street Fighter, Double Fine, Star Wars, Disney Infinity, Call of Duty, etc.

PlayStation owes a tremendous amount of their success to guys like him. I can't wait to see what's in his future.

Whoa! Well best wishes to you Adam. Thanks for all the support at Soby for the PlayStation team. And thanks for the fantastic E3 presentation of last year.

These consipiracy theories are always entertaining to read.
Guys gues what, people change careers / jobs fairly regularly. These guys have been in these roles for quite some time now, and being in the same role for a decent length of time can burn you out. ESPECIALLY for people that are creatively-minded, as these fine gentlemen have all been.

There is nothing out of the ordinary here, Sony suits aren't killing kittens and puppies behind the scenes, and they will continue operating just fine. If anything, it lets other up-and-comers a chance to further improve the work these guys have accomplished.

I like Adam, he seems to me as one of the most charismatic persons of Playstation... So best of luck to him.

People comes and go is very normal in business. I think Playstation still have many talented persons to fill in his position. So, I am not too worried about it.

Oh boy that's sad. Anyway, wish you all the best on your future path.

Also, thank you Adam, your work has been very positive for the gaming community for all these years.

Ruh roh.

Both him and shahid kamal are going to be looked back as so instrumental in the PS4s early 3rd party success.
I guess at this point, all the significant deals have already been done for the next few years.

Still a very very heavy blow.

The age of Sony is done.

One of the nicest guys I've ever met, hella approachable too.

I saw him this last E3 at the JW Marriott and told him I was faced with concern over my future; whether or not I wanted to be practical or chase my passion. Our conversation was cut short, but we picked it up when we ran into each other again. The Man gave me probably the realist advice I've ever gotten, and more importantly it was optimistic.

One hell of a buisness man, but most importantly one hell of a human being.

Thanks Adam.

/touched

It was great talking to you, and I have all of the time in the world for people following their passions!

Wow, good luck Adam. Will always remember the FFXV/KH3/FFVII Remake/Shenmue 3 announcements!

This. Both of those nights were incredibly memorable and he lead those moments on stage.

Damn, what the hell, didn't see him leaving any time soon, he did such great work too and seems like he has so much charisma, he's going to be hard to replace. Good luck to him.

Yeah, he did an amazing job.
