Akiba's Trip: Undead and Undressed |OT| No shoes, no shirt, all fanservice!

Bu-bf6VCAAAVC4K.jpg

Just this quest dialogue slayed me before I even got to the actual quest. This localization is pretty amazing.

I will say fighting a mob of people in a narrow place right next to an exit of a screen was definitely not fun. From the camera giving up on you, the slowdowns that were happening to where I really had no idea what was even going on, lol

Asian Vita version have full English subs and voices? (VCAS-34070)

Might pick this up in Hong Kong tomorrow rather than wait till I get back to the USA if that's the case.

Still not sure I want to play it on the plane, and I do have to continue P4G

Is there anyway to control your partner's AI? I thought I read something about that before, but I can't find anything.

Edit: NVM, I figured it out. (You press left or right on the d-pad during battle.)

Small name inconsistency, when you get the "Connoissucker" nickname, it pops up as "Fine Duck" at first.

Dammit! I thought that was fixed. Going to have to dig through the files tomorrow and fix it up for the PS4 version, I guess. Sorry about that!

I have the Asia Vita version (VCAS-34070) and it has Eng and Japanese subs and voices which you can switch to your liking.

Combat is kind of meh and pretty hard (maybe because I'm on gamer difficulty?) but I actually am loving the side missions and just exploring. Such a cool concept to re-create Akiba virtually.

Tom, do you know if the PS4 version will be more seamless with less loading screens? Seems to be an awful lot of those in the PS3 version.

Played for a few hours (just past the
Rin concert
)

The one thing that really bothers me is the MC shoving everyone around. What a dick. Doesn't matter if it's his partner or some random person on the street, just push them out of the way.

The camera(s) kinda suck as well. None of the tutorials mention that you're supposed to talk to the vampire after you've positively IDed them, then they'll fight you.

Really enjoying it otherwise, mainly due to the great localization and silliness of it all.

Got fleeced by my sister wtf. I'm asking about her favorite things, talking about the day, then she gives me the "won't you do something nice for your wonderful sister?"
So I decide to give her some money.

She takes 10,000 yen!
I got owned. I feel like such a Broffoon.

So, this might seem a bit silly but any idea what game trailers are in the game that play on the tv's and stuff? I know Conception and Mind Zero, but there's another that has a dude riding a horse and I think 9/26 as a date that looks pretty neat so I figured here might be a good a place as any to ask if anyone knew what that was.

Also, I'm not terribly far but are the coliseum things worth going through? Like is there a worthwhile prize for ranking all the way up.

My game randomly crashed after I bought something from that store in Electric Town Plaza that sells the clothes you lost for cheap (and after I put it back out of sleep mode because I had to do something) and I lost two hours and a Magic Wand. I hope I can get another one soon. ;_;

The PS4 version has load times in all the exact same spots, but they're notably quicker.

There's really no "seamless" version of the game, I'm afraid. Players definitely seem like they're meant to fast-travel via the map.

Also, I'm not terribly far but are the coliseum things worth going through? Like is there a worthwhile prize for ranking all the way up.

I'd say yes -- you get a lot of really rare and crazy weapons and clothing items by going through the Battle Arena fights (bear suit!), along with a ton of unique walk styles and strip styles.

It's all just customization options, but in a game like this, that's a pretty huge reward, I'd say.

The arena is where you get some of the rarest items in the game, and exclusive stripping styles, so I'd say it's worth it.

I'm wavering on whether or not to wait on the PS4 release. The improved loading times alone might be enough to justify it, and the next two months already have so much to play that I'm leaning toward waiting. Maybe If XSeed hadn't just released Trails PC I'd have time to play this now...

You're a wonderful person and I love you. Now to go watch find out more about it and sulk that I can't have it.

You had me at bear suit. Looks like I actually have a reason to play through a games coliseum. Also it's incredibly cool how you're actually on the forums like this. Keep up the awesome work you guys do.

I don't suspect you know, but why is it that the PS4 version, being read off of optical media, is faster than the Vita version read off of a cartridge?

That's something that bugs me about the Vita in general. It uses cartridges, yeah, but in so many ways it seems to behave like it reads optical media. It has relatively long load times, it can't save saves on the cartridge - it's kinda annoying really.

But anythings better than using an actual optical medium on a portable console. Fuck UMDs.

PS4 games are read off the HDD, PS4 is way more powerful and this game doesn't seem as demanding for the home console as the Vita version is for the handheld, maybe also because of better optimization.

PS4 games aren't read off of optical media, but off of the HDD.

Ah yeah, mandatory installs - I forgot.
Still doesn't explain why the Vita behaves like it reads optical media

With my style of playing games, that's going to be a bitch once I actually own a PS4.

The writing in this game is absolutely hilarious. Good job, XSEED! I'm getting a lot of laughs and entertainment out of this one!

One more thing, is it normal for some side quests that they can be done multiple times. I'm doing the synthesizer hunter quest and I've completed it like 5 times with 5 sets of rewards. Seems like easy grinding.

Gah, reading through this makes me want to order the Vita version right now. Waiting patiently for PS4 version instead. Is there an official release date on that? All I see is Winter 2014 so far.

I'm enjoying the game so far. I just wish the map told you exactly where you are instead of the general area you are in.

I'm expecting the same date that Amazon has as a placeholder, September 30th.

I'm expecting that range because for some reason, Amazon updated my shipping estimate to that range.

I can't wait to dig in more after work today. I'm also loving the English dub.

I had no idea this game featured MOGRA and Dear Stage, lol. I guess someone (besides me) is a mofuku fan (as Nemu puts it).

Is Star Kebob (next to Dear Stage) a location in the game? Are either choroyama/tenchou or kei at MOGRA? (When I was in Japan last June, I wondered if anyone would remember me for Anison Index; the moment I walked in, I saw kei working the bar and he looked up and cheered when he saw me.)

If this follows more of the places I frequent/people I know, I wonder if Momoi (being referred to as the "Queen of Akihabara") has a reference in the game.

I know Star Kebob has an ad on the loading screen when you select an area & I recall it's there, but you can't visit it.

You should be able to get the yellow pointers back by pressing the triangle button. There's never any quest in the game that doesn't have these.

But anythings better than using an actual optical medium on a portable console. Fuck UMDs.

See, I never understood the UMD hate. UMDs have always worked just fine for me, and they're not even that slow -- games like Ys: The Oath in Felghana, Brave Story, etc. load pretty much instantly.

And from a publisher's perspective, the UMD was a godsend -- optical media is SO MUCH CHEAPER to produce.

I miss UMDs. :(

Are accessories just purely for cosmetics? The few that I have don't seem to improve my stats at all.

Yep. They're there to look good, and that's it. ;)

Yeah, there are a few repeatable side quests included specifically for such purposes.

I'm expecting the same date that Amazon has as a placeholder, September 30th.

Then you shall be disappointed, I'm sorry to say. That's a placeholder date, and it's looking more and more likely that we're not going to be able to make it. Hopefully we won't be too far behind it, but I wouldn't count on a September release.

Wow, you do know your Akiba!

I don't recall there being any Momoi references, which is kind of surprising now that you mention it (even I know who Momoi is, and I haven't frequented Akihabara in 11 years!).

The other names you've dropped are ones I'm less familiar with (aside from Nemu), and I don't believe the game has any references to those individuals.

There are plenty of other references, though, to take their place. ;)

What about AsoBit City? In the game?

You can collect a flyer for AsoBit City, for sure, but I don't think it's a visitable shop.

Watched a bit of the Giant Bomb quick look so now I pretty much have to buy this. Is the Vita version any good?

Yep. It's arguably the more technically sound version of the two, with the only real downside being smaller text that's a little harder to read in spots. If that doesn't seem like it'll be an issue, then you're good to go. ;)

I WANT to like this game more. I really do. But...

The camera, the targeting, the load times, the slowdown - argh! So frustrating.

I'm still enjoying it, but this game had the potential to be really great and it's bumming me out.

Yeah, I completely agree. I wanted so much to like it, and I mean I guess I do, but man it's not nearly what I expected it to be.

I won't lie, it does have its issues but the characters and plot won me over. Once you learn to overlook the problems, playing it is truly a great time.

Yeah, as annoying as the slowdown to be at times (not to mention the random freezing for a second) and the camera can be a huge pain when it comes to larger groups &/or tighter areas, it has that charm where you're willing to overlook it (for the most part) because it's unique & silly.

I read that this was a sequel.

Did the previous game play like this? If so, that's even more frustrating.

They've done this once before and didn't iron out the kinks in the sequel?

Hey Tom,

How's the PS4 version for Vita remote play?

Haven't tried it myself, but I've heard one person say it works perfectly, and one other person say it works but has noticeable input lag that kind of cripples the experience. So... I dunno... I guess it works, but maybe not perfectly? ;)

It's something we'll have to play around with and put through its paces, for sure.

mofuku is the person behind Dear Stage and MOGRA. Maon Kurosaki (part of Altima as well as her solo stuff) came from Dear Stage as did Dempa Gumi, Inc.

I am one of the founders of the MOFC - MOGRA Overseas Fan Club
https://www.facebook.com/groups/mograofc/

We're the people who since December of 2009 have been tuning in to the MOGRA stream on ustream. The number of people tuning in increased dramatically once cortana mentioned it on Megatokyo. It's also been covered on various news outlets:

kei is one of the employees who maintains the place/works the bar/DJs during certain events:

Always with a smile on his face, one of my favorite people at MOGRA. (As I stated before, it made me really happy that kei was literally the first person to recognize me as we all agree on kei being one of the nicest/best people there.)

choroyama is the manager/co-owner of MOGRA.
d-yama.jpeg

He's the man who makes everything happen.

MOGRA is busiest when the trains stop running on Friday and Saturday nights. So their Saturday night events run around 7am PDT to 1pm PDT on ustream and that's when we tune in. First Saturday of the month is Anison Matrix = current and recent (with some of the 90's and 00's) anime themed night and very popular with today's crowd of anime/gamer fans. Third Saturday is Anison Index = Anime from the 70's onward, different DJ set. Here's a pic from last June of Anison Index:
P1000027.JPG

You can notice the ventilation/AC system on the top, the disco ball and such and how they copied that in the game.

Momoi I met back in 1998 when I was doing BeOS localization work. She attended a Japanese BeOS DevCon dressed as Sailor Mercury. Kept in touch online and she became famous... so the Japanese Momoists refer to me as "American Momoist no Ichiban".

Oh, and who doesn't love Star Kebab? :)

Ah, yeah, I expected that answer. I guess I have to explain.

I own around 500 - 600 physical games right now (and growing, of course) and I treat them really, really well. In all the time I've played video games on consoles (Admittedly, it's only been 10 years since I've started when I was 9 years old) I have never, ever "destroyed" a game. No cartridge, no disc, no nothing. And in case of handhelds, I always carry around every game I own for them (which, I know, is risky) because I usually don't play one game for a long time, but rather shuffle between a huge amount of games (which is why I am wary of mandatory installs on PS4 and Xbox One).
And, you see, in early 2013, I decided it was time to jump into the PSP library and got myself a PSP. Now, naturally, that came with a few problems - due to UMDs being not only bulky, but also optical media, I couldn't carry around more than a few at a time - something I really don't like doing.
So, well, I was like "gotta deal with it" and only always took 2-3 games with me plus the one inside the PSP. 2 weeks after I got my PSP with a handful of games, I tried playing one of them and the PSP wouldn't read it. I though "well, that's shitty", tried a different game, which, luckily, worked. So I assumed it must have been a one time error and tried again - the UMD wouldn't be read.
Why? Because there was a crack in it's case and now the PSP wouldn't spin the disc because it was blocked by the case. Fucking amazing. 2 whole weeks after getting the thing the game was broken - Well, not the game, the UMD was perfectly fine, but the PSP couldn't read it because the plastic case was broken.
I have, since then, only ever carried around one game with my PSP. But because of that, even though there are many awesome games on the system, I barely ever play on it. And to date, that one UMD has been the only game I've owned that broke.

It's really more of a personal thing. I can totally understand people liking UMDs, and, to be honest, at the time the additional storage space in comparison to the DS was a big leap (similarily to how the cartridge -> disc change went about) and it absolutely makes sense to use them from a business standpoint (again similar to the cartridge -> disc shift in the days of the PS1), but personally, I hate the things and they kind of ruin the system for me - it's just doesn't fit my style of playing games and I think it's a pretty backwards idea to use easily damaged media as you choice of game distribution on a system meant to be taken on the road - especially when cracking the protective case itself is enough to render the game unplayable. One good thing came from it though: most PSP games are dirt cheap nowadays, even new (hence why I still own around 40 games for the thing; it's a shame I barely get to play them).

Hmmm. That is rather unfortunate.

Were you carrying your UMDs around loose, or were they in a UMD case? Because I carry a lot of UMDs around with me as well, but I keep them in those clamshell UMD cases they sell at GameStop:

http://www.gamestop.com/common/images/lbox/802170b.jpg

Which are absolutely fantastic (say what anyone will about GameStop, their game cases are consistently some of the best out there -- I use their Vita card case as well, and find it similarly impressive).

To date, I own over 120 games on UMD, and have never cracked a single one despite carting them around with me all the damned time.

I think you may have just gotten unlucky, honestly.

And one of the nice things about UMDs is, you can actually replace the outer case -- you can make that game work again. You just need to buy a game you don't care about and swap the discs from inside.
