Amiibo: E3 info on Nintendo's NFC Figure line

Mario kart supports DLC, so a patch could add the NFC support.

But I like the idea of these figures. Nintendo has so many strong character line ups and a lot of characters are certainly able to cross over to other games, so essentially it could be used as a cross game DLC that you only have to buy once.

That's exactly what I'm hoping for. Though I'm sure we'll never see Ness or Samus in Mario Kart. Maybe characters that shouldn't have gotten the shaft the first time around (Dry Bones!) will get a figure that unlocks the char in Mario Kart, and a trophy in Smash or something?...

No, that doesn't actually sound that great...

Besides, if they do DLC for Mario Kart, I want battle arenas :'(

I'll probably buy one of these, and rarely use it, but I think it's a great idea for Nintendo.

This also seems like the perfect precursor to Pokemon on Wii U. Will make Nintendo a fucking boatload, and will allow therm to keep the trading system working.

It like how you can train them, and have two figures battle each other, in ssb.

The models all look nice.

Buying all of them.

Most importantly buying DK a fedora and a white glove.

I can't be the only one who thought this

I want them all. But for sure I'll get Fox, DK, Mario, Link and Samus.

Also, I would love to redeem my 2000 club Nintendo coins to get some of these figurines.

I want them all, but I feel like I still dont understand what purpose they serve.

They must be awaiting announcing some game that fully utilizes them... Because I dont see the point in using them in a game like Smash.

I can see smash bros using these as assist characters / enhanced AI cpu players, and I can see MK8 getting their own version of drivatars with this, but I have no idea what the yoshi or toad games could benefit from these.

I guess its a question of how much data the NFC can hold - if it can store a whole rigged 3D model as well as maybe some SFX then I can see this as a way to indefinitely add 'skins' to games without needing to back patch everything when new toys get released.

AFAIK the problem disney infinity has / had is all of the character data was shipped on the disk, so they have to release a new version of the game for additional characters - which you obviously don't want to do if you're nintendo and planning on making these cross game.

With regards to the Super Smash Bros. figurines, will more fighters be announced? I would love to train a Little Mac & Mega Man, for instance.

Same here. I understand that Nintendo wants to sell us more shit, but I fail to understand what purpose they serve.

Seems like a very hamfisted reaction to Skylanders.

From what I understood of the amiibo presentation, these figures really only serve their purpose when you're going to a friend's house to play smash brothers. That way, instead of playing a stock Mario, you can play your leveled up Mario, which would be more powerful/have different skills. Other than that scenario, I don't see the point of these things.

So where's my Nintendo Hearts/Nintendolanders game? Seems a bit silly to announce these without the software to properly showcase them. Right now they're just collector items with minor in-game bonuses.

I'm going to get them all, because they look really neat. I am weak.

They did mention that games outside of Smash Bros will use them. Mario Kart 8, Bowser Party 10 (I know what I said), Yoshi's Woolly World, and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker will find ways to implement them.

Possible future games to use them is a good question. Splatoon is possible.
Wonderful 101 sequel?

How about that name? It has Mii in it - does that help in the marketplace? Every time I hear it, I just think amoeba - not a word I generally associate with a fun toy.

When I showed my wife, who is not a gamer in the slightest, her response was, "oh, like amigo."

The total word is a bit weird, but it's definitely unique and recognizable (which helps with branding and trademarking). As for why they chose it:

Ami = "friend" in French (these figurines are your little pals), or "amigo" in Spanish
"Mii" is obvious
Not sure about "Miibo" - is there some kind of word in Japanese or some other language which would explain why they tacked the "bo" on at the end?
