Amiibo: E3 info on Nintendo's NFC Figure line

The total word is a bit weird, but it's definitely unique and recognizable (which helps with branding and trademarking). As for why they chose it:

Ami = "friend" in French (these figurines are your little pals), or "amigo" in Spanish
"Mii" is obvious
Not sure about "Miibo" - is there some kind of word in Japanese or some other language which would explain why they tacked the "bo" on at the end?

I think its supposed to evoke both amigo and amoeba (as AFAICS each toy is its own 'lifeform' that can grow and learn)

I think they just wanted a unique and pronounceable name. Something catchy and easy to remember. Not unlike their "Wii" strategy. It's not a new marketing strategy but it's been shown to work.

I'm aching to hear more details on these. Especially the pricing. I'm guessing $7.50 minimum to $15 tops right?

Would definitely buy every Zelda one though.

The figures shown in Smash 3DS match the poses of the physical ones. I think this might show us what the future figures will be / look like.

So this basically confirms dlc for Mk8 then?

I don't think that all the figures will work on all the compatible games (they'll label the compatibility on the pack of the figures, I guess), so it could just be that you can "train" your Mario/Toad/Peach/DK figures throguh MK8 play sessions

probably the sad reality.

They need to make there own nintedolanders game. As at the moment you won't really gain much buy buying them, unless they unlock characters you can't get any other way. Which in games like Mario kart or smash, will just annoy people if the popular characters get dlc figure locked.

The Yoshi amiibo looks to be the only one that's got articulated joints. That's more appealing to me than a solid chunk (think Nendoroids).

Maybe this was talked about earlier in the thread, but I'm curious:

What is the price point you'd be willing to pay for a single amiibo figure? Is there a price point where you'd say "that's too much" for one?

Personally speaking, I'm a fan/collector of the Skylanders series (yeah yeah, sue me) and those figures are priced $9.99 for single core characters, $12.99 for "Lightcores" (aka, figures that can light up when interacting with the portal) and $14.99 for Giants, Swap Force and Trap Master figures (larger figures). They go up to $24.99 for Adventure/Triple/Double packs as well.

On the other side of the aisle, Disney Infinity figures are $12.99 for the base figure, and the larger Play Sets are $24.99.

I think for me, a single figure would be ok at around $9.99. That's a pretty competitive price point. They could stick them at $7.99 and be amazing (that was the original price point for Skylanders) but on the flip side, I think it's a realistic possibility for them to be more than $9.99. I think $17.99+ for one would be way too much though.

I haven't paid much attention to the Infinity community, but I know the Skylanders community is quite fine at the current price point, but many agree if they go up any higher (looking at you, Toys R Us and charging a $1 more per figure than every other retailer), they may be too expensive to collect or "splurge" on when you go to the store.

I personally can't believe Skylanders/Disney Infinity gets away with charging £10 for a figure, but if that's what people pay. They seem to be quite well made figures, so that'll put up the price by a bit to begin with. The same £10 band wouldn't surprise me.

haha well, my view has always been, if i'm gonna pay $9.99 for like, a map pack or something, why not pay $9.99 for a physical, tangible object? The figures are pretty well made for what they are, and heck, I've paid that price and higher for action figures that don't do things in video games.
Plus I love Spyro lol

Some of those figures are drool worthy though, and as a Pokemon fan too, I'm excited to see what other Pokemon figures they'll have.

I wonder if the name is related to the word "amigo" which means friend

Also, Smash Bros uses makes me think of 2 things :

3rd Party Characters Amiibos and Game & Watch amiibo xD

They also match the renders on Smash bros website

I'm guessing they will be $15-$20. I would prefer for them to be less but I think that's the realistic range. I don't think they'll do different sizes within the amiibo line (even for larger characters like Bowser) but we might see them make other types of statues/figures in the future if these take off.

Nintendo is stressing the multiple game thing here. I think it's more that you are supposed to buy your favorite and use it over the course of a few years as opposed to trying to force you to buy every single one.

This is kind of an interesting topic though. The quality of the figures seems to be better than Swap Force or Disney Infinity. I haven't bought into those figure lines, but my understanding is that Disney Infinity provides direct DLC-like content with each figure. Does anyone know what type of digital content comes with Swap Force figures?

I'd probably only get these if it's the only way to get Link in MK8. Hopefully they just release DLC if that's what their MK8 plan is.

Looking at the paint jobs on these figures, especially Samus, they kind of remind me of the Bandai Portraits trading figure line. Those are surprisingly affordable, only about 500 yen each in blind boxes. The Nintendo figures look like they're smaller than the typical Portraits figure, though the inclusion of the NFC chip (presumably in that heavier looking base) would of course have to tip up the price. With any luck though, these may just end up a lot cheaper than most people here have been expecting.

They kind of do the same things and different things at the same time lol.

Infinity has base characters, and then there's Playsets. Playsets are special "mission" kind of things where you have objectives. Only characters of that Playset can be there, so like, you couldn't have Sully from Monsters Inc in the Incredibles level. However, the figure that unlocks that also unlocks the stuff in a Free Play mode where you can make your own level and do what you want.

Similarly, there's characters that have no "Playset" level thing. Jack Skellington is one off the top of my head. That's a character you can only use in the free play mode.

[Hope I got this right. Not that sure, but pretty sure I've got the details correct]

Skylanders has characters, items and Location pieces. For instance, there's a Adventure Pack called "Darklight Crypt"- It comes with the Darklight Crypt Location piece, "Ghost Roaster"- a character, and two items; Time Twist Hourglass and Healing Elixer.

The Location Piece in the first two games, Spyro's Adventure and Giants, summoned the Darklight Crypt so you can play a brand new level. In the first game, upon completion it gives you health item that is put on every single level. In Swap Force (and likely Trap Team) it summons a hailstorm of bones and stuff falling down to damage enemies.

Ghost Roaster is a playable character you can level up and is exclusive to this pack. The items can be used with any character to slow down time and heal you respectively.

So tl;dr- Infinity allows you to level up characters, and get missions/items to use in build a level stuff. Skylanders allows you to level up characters, get new story levels, and items to use for your character.

(if you're referring to swap force in particular, the Swap Force characters that you can split in half are basically double figures; the reader in the portal is strong enough to register both halves of the character, and each one functions like it's its own character with specific upgrade paths. I believe it's the bottom half that keeps track of money/EXP however)

though the inclusion of the NFC chip (presumably in that heavier looking base) would of course have to tip up the price.
Actually from what I understand, NFC chips are surprisingly affordable. Someone once estimated that they were probably close to $1 for the Skylanders. Skylanders actually had a preorder card with an NFC chip in it that gave you bonus stuff in the game at Target...and those are $1..so maybe even less now! lol

Some characters I'd really like to see an amiibo figure of are:

Has Nintendo said if they plan on doing a full Infinity style game with these? or just use them as accessories to their regular games.
