How many android phones run stock? I could only find the Huawei Ideos besides the Nexus models (but I couldn't find an Ideos for AT&T's 3G network).

The G2 is mostly stock. There's some bloatware but there's no custom skin on it.

AT&T probably won't have any of the really good Android phones until the iPhone goes to Verizon.
Do you mean hardware or software? I won't pay money for really good hardware if it's still running Android 2.1 and is crippled with bloatware and carrier restrictions.

no idea what we are going to get from the olympus, but it will probably be the best hardware out when released and supposed to release on ATT first. No doubt will have motoblur.

Which btw, it's supposed to be running Motoblur Lite which is what is on the Droid X. I actually don't mind it on the X but on the other Moto phones, Blur is a turd.

i dont know why you can't just have the option to completely disable launchers as well... i mean, its not like they are revenue generating for the companies... why not allow it to be changed

Well according to another GAffer a page back, launchers are going to be removed from being a critical OS function of which makes sense to me.

I would imagine this allow Google to update the OS themselves and take the hardware manufactures and carriers out of the equation.

If this comes to pass as being true, it's a big win for consumer choice and Android overall.

that would be AWESOME if they required launchers to be optional, but honestly I think it kind of goes against the idea of Android. These companies should be free to do what they want with Android when they put it on their phones. And if Google keeps the Nexus line rolling, there will always be a top of the line option (or close to it) for a phone w/ vanilla Android.

or you can root and run a custom stock ROM like I am with my Droid X.

It's a shitty situation for some tech-oriented consumers, but there are options.

I think if Samsung sells a crap ton of the Nexus S, they'll see the numbers of people that want the pure android experience. To me, I don't think launchers should be static to a manufacture or a carrier. This to me, flies in the face of the openness of android. If Android is about choice then give it to the people, don't punish them for their choice.

In an ideal world you could choose to download Sense UI, TouchWiz or Motoblur in addition to the stock launcher and other apps such as launcher pro.

I don't know about having a competitors skin on another phone. I agree it should be removable but I think that's going a little too far.

I'm curious if anyone here has experience using the Nook Color with Froyo?

While it gives up some size, it seems like a good alternative to iPad for internet browsing, etc. Much cheaper, and double the RAM.

Can't see why someone would pick the Desire over, say, the Desire Z or Desire HD
In my case, the Desire or the adesire Z were the only options as they are the only ones I could get with ATT 3g bands. The Z cost more and I didn't really want a physical keyboard.

^ Speaking of the Samsung...

I got tipped off that there is a phone heading to both Verizon (and possibly Sprint) that apparently BGR/Endaget and so on haven't even seen yet.

It's said to be "stock" Android phone and be from Samsung. Verizon apparently had a contest last week in the PacNW region in which sales reps would call in after making a sale and enter to win a prize. Apparently, one of them won this "unannounced" phone.

I tried to pry the name of the phone from my friend but she wouldn't spill the beans. Figured I'd give GAF hope that stock Android can actually exist on Verizon! :lol

I think it comes down to choice. Then again, if vendors blocked certain skins, that's fine, but I think there needs to be a setting option to have either the vendor skin or stock android at the bare minimum.

I just don't understand the negatives of allowing someone to disable a vendor skin. Sure sell it with it on and default but we should be able to just disable it fully. Like I said, besides the sale, it's not revenue generating so I don't see the big deal. I don't see how that's against the openness..

That and apparently the tegra 2 is the de facto hardware platform for almost all of the next gen phones (besides htc so far). Samsung just placed a large order for them, guess orion is delayed or slowed. That makes lg, samsung, moto. Sounds like it's going to be honeycomb loving

I was going to try it, but after seeing the news about how much BN might be exposing with their first official update, I think I'm going to wait for that first before I try.

The videos on youtube certainly make it look pretty smooth though.

so I just found out my att contract is up already, I thought it didn't end until september 2011. I wanna make the jump to sprint any rumors of some dual core sprint phones next month?

ok that font clock is on my lock screen too, running the 2.2 sence HD rom ... so just wondeing if there's an apk somewhere out there for a clock widget using that same font?
I'm not totally positive, but I think that clock font is available in the "Beautiful Widgets" app.

That is the "Android" font. Should be part of Beautiful Widgets.

Even though I'm using a G2 now, I find the lack of LED notifications to be disappointing and I end up tempted to to pop my SIM card back into my N1.

Meizu M9 christens site launch with full specs list

Meizu CEO Jack Wong has been teasing the M9 handset for some time now, and if we're not mistaken, the official site just went live with a full list of specs to boot. As promised, there's a 3.5-inch 960 x 640 resolution screen (reportedly the Sharp ASV display), and we're also apparently looking at a 1GHz S5PC110 processor (just like the Samsung Galaxy S), Android 2.2, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, A-GPS, 802.11b/g/n, microSDHC, a removable 1370mAH lithium-polymer battery, and support for (drumroll, please) GSM, GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA, HSDPA,and HSUPA. Too good to be true? Word on the street is this very phone will be available December 25th in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, and will expand to the rest of China days later. We'll believe it when we see it.
mmm...

For those of you without Froyo on their device yet, I just discovered that the fine folks over at ppcgeeks got Froyo working on the HTC Touch Pro. That was my first smartphone. My N1 and G2 are rooted. I think I'll have something to tinker with later.

I had it on my Touch Diamond and it's not fun.

This is a beast of phone

At the phone's heart beats a dual-core Tegra 2 processor running at 1GHz, the first such configuration to be officially announced by any smartphone manufacturer (though we're expecting others any day now). In case you're wondering how such power might be used, well, for starters, you've got both full 1080p TV-out via HDMI and video capture through an 8 megapixel primary camera paired with a 1.3 megapixel cam up front for face-to-face calling.

You lust too much over gadgets. That thing is never going to come to the US with subsidies and return policies. The M8 cost about the equivalent of $400/$500 at launch (in a country where the iPhone sells for $750/$900).
That's a decent price! I mean for a retina display and froyo I expected $600+. It'll probably come to about that on ebay though. I believe Meizu have their own android skin, right? Most likely not worth.

Installed the leaked JPU firmware onto my Samsung Galaxy S the other night, fuck yeah! Its still not perfect, but they've freed up more system memory so multi-tasking is much improved, and the lag is pretty much gone. Few issues with the browser, but otherwise the phone is really starting to fly now. Hoping the official 2.2.1 release is going to really shine (about time too)

Also got around to installing the Modaco custom rom onto the Mrs' Orange San Francisco, and damn that thing is also flying now. All the Orange bollocks is gone, and graphic hardware is now enabled across the device. Bumped the VM Heap Size up to 32mb and Angry Birds has gone from 3fps to something that is a lot more playable.

I think I'll stick with the moto Olympus unless it has lesser specs.... But impressive to say the least. Those thinking that the Tegra 2 won't be the defacto standard had better start their crow feast a little early.

once samsung placed a large order of them, its pretty much set in stone that we have a standard architecture now. HTC is the only one left

The Nexus S came out today, no one is talking about it. :( I ordered, Best Buy is offering free overnight shipping.
The Nexus S is sort of DoA in the fact that it's only on Tmobile (of which few on GAF have) and no microSD card.

The only pro's of the thing is the screen and "with Google" Gingerbread 2.3 all stock.

Might as well call this thing the Nexus One S as it's not really much of an improvement.

It also has a front-facing camera. And maybe it will go to Verizon, which should help it out.

Regarding the SD card: I used to be adament about such a feature, but I find it a pain to switch cards between devices and to keep track of all them, especially since I also need to keep track of a micro-to-full size adapter. In an increasingly more web-based world, it's much easier and more convenient to transfer files over local networks and the Internet.

Now that's from a mass market point of view.

From a nerd's perspective, I have to wonder how this would affect rooting procedures.

Anatech's review said that the S has 16GB of internal storage of which it partitions off 1GB to be used as a "virtual SD" card.

Having had my Nexus One for just shy of 10 days, I had a 2GB card in there of which I used quite a bit. It was great to move stuff around and to have that extra capacity. Hackers are going to find a way to Root the S just like any other Android phone, taking away a mechanism to do that might slow them down, but at what cost to the end user?

My biggest problem is that it only has 16GB of storage of which in 2010, most people are wanting at least a minimum of 32GB for music, photos, movies, whatever else. Taking into account that the S is also coming on the cusp of CES in which the next-gen Android phones to run 3.x or higher will make the Nexus S just another Android phone and nothing really special.

I'd say if I still owned my Nexus One, I wouldn't trade up for the S simply because the N1 is still an amazing phone (even with the build quality problems and quirks). Also... I wouldn't hold my breath to this coming to AT&T or Verizon/Sprint anytime soon, but it would be nice if the option was there, but I just don't see them doing it.
