Ok final question, :D

I got widget locker and it made itself the home key for editing which is fine, but now whenever I hit home it takes me to motoblur and not launcher pro. I have home switcher and have set launcher pro as default, but still when I hit home it takes me to blur.

I've got an issue with the default Froyo browser on my HTC Desire. Whenever I go to a page on the BBC site with any embedded video content, it crashes back to the desktop. I'm guessing it's something to do with Flash, any ideas?
Yeah I have the same issue.
Are you running a modaco rom?

I'm running R8. Never had any issue before now.

I also had to uninstall Launcher Pro full version .7.6.0 as memory was leaking all over the show. Un-Installed yesterday morning and running like a dream again.

Hey gang. New Android owner here, just bought a Captivate. Got rid of my iPhone 3GS and couldn't be happier so far. Still love my iMac, but Apple's limitations and restrictions on a mobile device was overkill.

Anyways, school me on some apps. What are some great additions to the phone that no one should be without?

Is there any super awesome functionality in the Google Voice widget/app?

Not really. The other Widget is just a message widget you can scroll through. No changes to the actual app that I noticed.

There are already tons of recommendations in the thread. Some of my favorites are:

Barcode Scanner It, uh - scans barcodes. I use it all the time, and it will help you with all the QR codes I'm about to embed if the image links actually work [EDIT] (which they didn't):

A Online Radio - Great if you like to listen to the radio or any streaming internet stations. Handles streams from the browser

Handcent SMS Good replacement for the stock IM client. Sort of a clunky interface, but does everything I want.

3banana notes Fantastic, lightweight, simple note taking app. Supports #hashtags for categorization. I love it.

I like 3banana even more with Comapss, which lets you create quick geotagged notes in 3banana.

Quick Settings is a nice, free app that gives you easy access to frequently used settings.

I don't understand the long delays for porting games from iOS... this image has been up for a long ass time

Angry Birds developer ported the game to WebOS before android and say it will be out by the end of August... I doubt it willhappen.

My Evo is a pretty amazing piece of hardware and I'm a mostly happy owner, I'd just like to see a little more effort (or justification) from developers.

Edited out great suggestions.

Awesome thank you. I went to the Market and just started scrolling. Next thing I know, 30 apps installed. Virtually everything I had on my iPhone I have here now. Now, does the market also have those awesome themes and widgets? I can't sideload until I root, so throw a few names for me to search through.

you should check out the android customization thread for a lot of suggestions, most (possibly all) of which are available from the market

But as a quick starting point

Alternate Homescreens:
Launcher Pro - I think most people here, including myself, use this
ADW Launcher - Another popular, open source, launcher
I recommended you try both and see which you like more

Some widgets commonly used here:
Tajm - text visual of the current time
BattStat - text visual of the current battery life

The only other widgets I use at the moment are from Launcher Pro Plus (paid version of Launcher Pro), Music Mod, and the stock Power Control widget

But there are plenty more out there, i highly recommend you check out the thread I linked to above

iPhone -- Objective C
Android -- Java + some C for NDK stuff.

Then the API difference, too.

There are like 5 music players that people say are good and none of them have all the features the basic iTunes built into the iPhone has. Goddammit. I've more or less given up on bTunes because it crashes so much, even though it has a sweet lock screen overlay and it looks exactly like iTunes. I've been screwing around with the stock player + Music Mod but why doesn't that include a lock screen widget or overlay? This shit should be FUNDAMENTAL Google, your stock music player should fucking show the picture of the album with some information like the song playing, album, and artist, and some basic fucking controls like pause and forward/back on the lock screen while playing, this should have been included in Android 1.0!

Widget Locker + Music Mod Widget should have the overall effect you're going for I think

Really? It works on my Droid X with the Froyo leak.

I download the direct link from XDA and it is saying the software is incompatible.

Any idea? I've never gotten that before on either of my Droids.

I downloaded the link from Droid-life.com and it installed fine not sure what the differences are between the two files.

Trillian seems to be working waaaaay better for me...

And eBuddy works waaaaaaay better than Trillian. Well, at least it doesn't disconnect for no apparent reason every 5 minutes.

I haven't had that issue with Trillian (yet!) but I'm just more familiar with Trillian so I'm sticking with that for now :-D

It's completely unusable for me for that issue alone. At least I can check whether I'm connected or not in the new build (icon in the notification bar) because in the previous build, there was no way of telling.

oh man, I finally got access to paid apps on my galaxy s with market enabler after so much time going around and reading many of forum thread.

it all started from the show off thread. I really like some of the customizable lockscreen. so I start looking for that widget locker app only to find out I can't buy it since my country doesn't support it.

from there I start reading about market enabler. then I find out I have to root my phone. then on the way to rooting my phone, I figure to update the firmware to latest official fw for my phone. find out the hard way that Kies is really hard to deal with so I read about Odin and update from that.

I download the firmware from the site provided and nearly bricking my brand new phone because it turns out, the particular fw I want (latest singapore fw) is corrupted. thankfully my phone can still go into download mode and I end up updating the latest HK fw.

after that was finished I try to root the phone, got the wrong update.zip file, end up reflashing the phone again and reset the machine to factory default before I try to root it again.

then after I finally got it to work, the tutorial I read suggest to apply the lag fix patch, so I figure why not. but when reading the tutorial for that, it's strongly suggested that I backup first using rom manager.

finally after all that sidequest to backup the rom and successfully patch the lagfix patch (after 20 minutes). I finally got to install market enabler. and just now, I successfully make my purchase for beautiful widget and widget locker.

phew.

The iPhone apps are written in Objective C, while Android apps are in Java. They'd probably either have to dive into Java and the whole Android framework first or hire someone to do it for them, so I think it's kind of understandable.

But C code can be used in the NDK.

It just seems to me they're dragging their butts.

Objective C and C are a bit different though.

And googles recommends not doing too much with the NDK.

I'm sure the main problem is converting the APIs.

For games I've seen Google emphasize the NDK time and again.

Hey Gaf, just got approved for posting, but I've been lurking in this thread for a while now..

This may not be the place, but this thread seems to be a lot more active than the hardware thread.

I was just wondering what a good screen protector/body kit would be good for a Samsung Captivate? I'm leaning towards phantomskinz right now, and I've heard mixed reviews about zagg. Realook and skinomi are other options as well.

I'd really like some input if you guys have any. Thanks.

Only for parts where the optimization was really, really needed. (Something like that is said in the documentation site, I believe.)

I don't think they meant the WHOLE project.

I really doubt that angry birds would need such optimization, though.

There's a perfectly well done clone called Flight Director that uses Google map images of real airports.

Question. Does the GPS in my Nexus only work with a data connection/wifi or are there apps that let me use it without being connected to th internet? Because initially I assumed the GPS worked like any other dedicated GPS system but clearly the Nexus doesn't have enough space to store all the maps the aforementioned would have, which is why the data-connection is necessary.

The GPS in Android phones should be independent of a cell connection. If you want maps, try mapdroyd for download-able maps.

A question about navigation. Is it possible to set 'avoid tolls' as default? It always revert back to normal ( the avoid tolls is unchecked) every time i turn off navigation.

Keep in mind Apple goes out of their way to make porting applications to / from iOS as difficult as possible. It's not really as straightforward as it can (or should) be.
