Look for Feedr. Also if youre running an alternate launcher look for Scrollable News. Its decent replacement to the HTC rss widget.
Yeah, I'm running Launcher Pro, so Ill give these a go as well. Nice recommendations, I'm headed to the market as we speak.

The rotation works fine on my Desire.
Can you elaborate on this? On my Desire the rotation works fine in compass mode, but it doesn't work like the guy does it in the official Google video i.e. he holds the phone flat and uses two fingers to rotate the map.

Is AndChat from the OP the best app for IRC Chatting? It keeps disconnecting for me on Rizon server. Any other good IRC apps?

Edit: No idea why it double posted like that, sorry.

Hey guys I just rooted my Droid X and I was wondering if there is anyone of recovering all the free applications I downloaded. It appears that the paid apps I bought are available to download but it doesn't list all of my free apps.

Boo! Searched for Google Maps in the market...none found :(

Edit: nevermind, it says Manila isn't one of the cities with 3d buildings...doesnt matter if i have it or not then :lol

I'm getting a Droid X for Christmas. It will be my first smartphone.

What is the #1 site to go to for Android news, or like the #1 forum for Android so I can get myself "in the loop" and learn as much as I can before the device arrives?

Android And Me is a good website, they break a lot of stories. Phandroid, Android Central and Droid Life are other good ones.

For forums, here and reddit's Android section fit the bill for me. I'm not sure what forum is the most active, but for discussions those are good.

You're awesome! Thank you.

Here is sort of a weird question:

With stock Android, if you are synced to Google Contacts, can you add a contact to your phone only so that it doesn't sync up with Google Contacts? I can do this on my phone that has Sense on it, but I can't remember if you can do it on stock Android. (On my phone I create a "phone" contact and then link it with its corresponding Google contact as a work around so my contact pictures don't look like pixelated pieces of shit. :lol)

GatorBait, I don't think there's any way to selectively synch contacts in Stock Android. You could turn off synching, but that would obviously be all or nothing.

How do you turn the 3D buildings on in Google Maps?
You don't have to turn them on - as soon as you go into 3d mode, they'll popup. But they don't exist for every location yet, only major cities. Try New York and Los Angeles, for example.

and zoom in close.

So for Android, you can download apps from anyplace, not just the Market? And what is the criteria for getting onto the Market? Are those apps tested or something first?

If you are on ATT they don't allow you to side load apps. Other carriers allow it.

As for the Market, they don't test apps, they just have to follow the terms and conditions.

Ugh, that sucks. You would think Google could just create an option that allows you to use contact photos pulled from your phone's memory instead of the ones it pulls from Google Contacts.

The fact that you can actually use the "phone contact" workaround on Sense to get nice contact photos is one of the aesthetic positives I like about Sense. (Of course, if Google fixed the problem, no workaround would be necessary in the first place... Got my fingers crossed Duarte fixes that shit in 3.0.)

receiver? Like a hotspot? to provide internet using your 3/4g connection?

Not as a wireless hotspot. My mom's house has wifi, but my computer doesn't have a wireless card. Usually, I use a usb adapter to pick up wifi at home on my PC, but I don't know where it is. I am wondering if there is a method similar to sb tethering, except for wifi instead of 3G.

I don't understand your problem. Why don't you want to sync the contact?

I understand. best guess is that you USB tether to your evo and then connect the evo to you're mom's wifi. You should be able to do this with pdanet, however depending on the browsing you want to do (https doesnt work in the free version) it may not be the complete package. Sorry i'm not more helpful.

I'm traveling out of the US for a few weeks and I want to be able to text and call. I don't want to pay the fees for texting and calling so what's the best thing to do? I have a Nexus One with T-Mobile.

I'd say.. swap out Tmo sim for one wherever you're visiting (prepaid). Did that for my euro trip last year.

I'm a little confused, you can do this...

Open Contacts App > Pick a person > Menu > Edit Contact > Touch the photo > Change Icon > Select photo from gallery

Unless you are talking about something else

How much? I am going to Prague in a week and thinking of doing that. How can I disable data or will a prepaid sim kill it?

For those interested, rapid progress has been made on a Gingerbread port for the galaxy S being that both devices are so similar.

I would love for them to get a good version of gingerbread for the Captivate working. I was waiting for AT&T to roll out Froyo but ended up using the one off of XDA and with it taking this long to get Froyo I do not expect the Captivate to get gingerbread any time soon if it gets it at all.

You want to use your phone as a wireless bridge? Why would you want to do that as isn't that the point to have data on a phone?

Update: There's no app for it. Unless you're comfortable messing around with root, I don't suggest doing it. It'll be a lot easier just to buy an ethernet cable for cheap or get another wifi card. If you're losing wifi usb cards, perhaps you should consider getting one that uses PCI standard or x1 slots.

Fuck man.. my HTC Magic is stuck on 2.1 and since it uses the radio that is used by Canadian networks.. I have no chance of upgrading to Cyanogen unless I want shitty battery life and a shitty signal :(

If you are also synced with Google Contacts, the picture you set as a contact photo will be synced up to Google Contacts. The problem with that is Google Contacts has a 96x96 cap on the dimension of their contacts photos. So if you set a 200x200 image as a contact photo for someone, it will be shrunk to 96x96 after your next sync. You end up with a 96x96 photo stretched out to a 200x200 box when you make/receive calls, which makes it horribly blurry/pixelated.

Basically, we need a setting so that it uses the contact photo you've applied from your phone and doesn't override it via sync.

So, the OP in this thread is fuck awesome. What happened to Andrex?

Andrex is the secret ingredient in the official Gingerbread ROM. Sacrifices were made for the greater good.

Does it matter if my phone is not rooted? It should still work, correct?

Rooted doesn't matter. Gotta make sure it's unlocked though. Call t-mobile; if you've been with them for a little while (45 or 90+days? I really don't remember lol Could be 180!) they'll do it for ya for free !

Had them hook me up when I talked to them via online chat. Had my girlfriend call customer care last week while she was at the airport heading to Barbados. Only "catch" is that they get back to you in 24 hours.

Funny thing is, when I went to london, I ended up using T-mobile over there and surprise! I didn't have to unlock my US tmo phone to use their sim after all. lol

Shouldn't be pricey in regards to just voice. Hell. Their data plans were WAAAY cheaper than it is over here! But yeah, you can disable data easily.

Called and they told me to contact Google. Called Google and they had an automated message telling me to call HTC for all my Nexus One needs. Called them and they were closed lol.

Damn you Nexus one!:lol

wait.

wait a sec. I think your Nexus one is already unlocked. :lol You may have the one built for T-mobile, but I don't believe it's locked to T-mobile. In fact, I don't think any of the Nexuses are locked in that regard.

Edit: Not sure why T-mo wouldn't know that.. :/
