Answer five short questions for a chance to win a $60 game (Now Closed)

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

I have considered, and I have done some smaller projects with friends. However, I am a lawyer by trade in a smaller country (Finland), so my entry to the industry, if there will ever be one, will be more in a supporting role of a copyright/corporate lawyer.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

I prefer long term contracts, but I don't shy away from short term.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

I would prefer to work with a smaller studio.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

I would prefer to work on one large project.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

I would prefer to work in a company that can self-publish games.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

1. I was considering it for a time, but at my core I'm a writer, and I can't see myself doing anything else- I'd love to write for video games at some point, but as a specific career field? Probably not- games is not an industry that respects and takes care of anyone, much less fringe workers like writers.

2. I like things simple- I'd love to just work in one place, long term and get paid in straight up cash. I accept that this is not the world we live in, and can and will be just as happy with contract work.

3. I feel like a triple A team might have more need for writers than an indie team, but an indie team would be a better work experience- so probably the latter.

4. I don't actually have a preference here- both experiences can be awful, and both can be tons of fun. I like to mix things up from time to time, so doing one big project over a stretch might make me want to do some smaller things in-between the next big one, but I like both experiences well enough.

5. Entirely depends on the publisher, but as a general rule? Probably without one- if my contributions to the project are strictly on the creative side, lessening the number of people who would want creative interference or focus test bullshit would be ideal for my own work.

Permanent employment.

A company that self-publishes games.

1. Yes

I am studying computer science and I originally chose the course because I wanted to be a game programmer. Now I'm unclear about what I'll end up doing. I love games but general industry practises like crunch and lay offs really put me off. I don't have it in me to work 60+ hour weeks for months at a time.

2. Permanent employment

3. AAA

4. One at a time

5. Self publish

Thanks for doing this!

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
Considered it but never went through with it. Seems like long hours and hard work.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
Permanent. Job security is always a plus. Going contract to contract would keep my anxiety up all the time.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
Indie probably. AAA studios seem to put the crunch on their devs way too often and I can't imagine that's a healthy work environment.

One large project over multiple years.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
1. No. Realistically i think the payoff would not be worthwhile.

2. Short employment periods.

3. Indie studio.

4. Several projects.

5. Publisher as a partnership work.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

Long term employment.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
Large / AAA studio.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
I guess it depends on what "several years" is; I would rather be doing various games with 2-3 year dev cycles each than say, work on an MMO for a very extended period of time.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
Self-published.

Hope this helps with your research project regardless :)

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

When I was younger, however it was never a serious career choice. No, I am not currently a game developer.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

Long term permanent employment.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

Small indie studio, however a managing/leading position in a AAA studio would probably be preferred.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

One large project over the course of several years.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

I'd prefer to work for a company that self-publishes, as I feel it would have the least outside influence.

I'm not from the US but I do have a US PSN account so I can still make use of a 60$ PSN code. If me entering is not appropriate, then ignore this if I win.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
I'm not currently a game developer, but I have thought about it quite a lot. I think I have a few good ideas for games that I'd like to try make a reality some day. Not just simple "Demon's Souls x *some other thing*", but I've actually started to make a couple of game bibles with all kinds of stuff planned out. I lack the artistic skills to do anything alone, so I'd need a small group of people with me, but I do have a few talented artist friends.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
I prefer long term though contract/temporary work can have its place, at times.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
Small or indie studio

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
I'd rather get one thing done more quickly/better than do several projects at a time.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
Self-publishing.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Self published

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

Considered, yes. Seriously, no. I think we're in a lucky position here in Finland as we have some schools which are offering education in the area. Good for the youth, I'm an old bastard.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

Always contract and permanent.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

I think I'd enjoy indie studio more. More relaxed and free, both artistically and ideologically. AAA studios tend to be more strict (At least in my mind). Better money in AAA business though, I'd think.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

One children at time. One project over many small tasks.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

I'd guess self-publish with some outside publisher is the best for artistic freedom.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
I seriously considered to become a game developer, even though I mostly write and draw.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
Permanent

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
Indie

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
Work on a large project

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
It depends, but both is fine for me.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

Yes, I have considered becoming a game developer and dabbled in modding.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

Long term, I value the security over temp work.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

AAA, honestly it would depend on a number of factors but with just this information to go by I'm sticking with AAA.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

Large project

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Self-publishes
, this is similar to question 3 for me. It would depend on a number of factors.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

Nope. I don't have the mindset for it.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

Permanent. I have a family and need the security of a regular paycheck.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

Hmm... lots of other factors here, of course, but small would seem to give you more control and let you be more creative, so I'll go that way.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

Several projects. It's good to have a fresh start every so often.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Self-publish. Again, that would seem to give you more say in the final product.

Sure, I'll answer your questions.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
I've often thought about it, but have not tried learning how to code or educating myself on whatever tools are available. It is something I'd consider a "pretty cool job," though.
2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
I would prefer a more stable/secure employment if that makes sense. I would think most people feel the same way.
3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
A smaller indie studio because it seems like it affords more creative freedom, despite the smaller funding opportunities and from what I understand - less job security.
4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
I think would prefer to work on several different projects as one long project that took several years could potentially start to feel tedious(?), although it'd be easier to focus on one large project.
5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
I would prefer to work in a company that takes advantage of the digital self-publishing options available.

1) I was a dev, just not a game dev. Wish I had become a game dev sometimes.

2) Long term, in general. Exceptions can be made.

3) Smaller, preferably. Heard nothing but horror stories from friends at larger houses.

4) Prefer large projects.

5) No preference. edit - probably self-publish, actually, the more I think about it.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

No

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

permanent employment

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

large AAA studio

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

several different projects over the same course of time

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

company that self-publishes games

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
I've considered it, seems to cost too much in terms of personal investment. Maybe my views will change later

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
At this point, I'd prefer the security of a permanent employment.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
Certainly a small one, I like the atmosphere of a small workplace

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
Over a few years, I would want a change up every so often. Several

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
Moreso the latter than the former, but not by much.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

1. Yes / Not yet, but it's what I'm going to school for.

2. Depends. I'd love a long-term position at one of my favorite developers if I could get one, but I don't mind contract work either.

3. I think there's a lot to learn from both, so ideally I'd work with both kinds of studios during my career.

4. Again, I'd like to experience both.

5. If we can sustain-ably self-publish, great. But there's a lot of benefits to having a good publishing partner.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
1. Yes, I've considered it.
2. Long Term/Permanent
3. Large/ AAA studio
4. Several different projects
5. Self-publishes

1. Yes, at one point.
2. I prefer long term/permanent employment.
3. I would prefer a small indie studio.
4. One large project over the course of several years.
5. Self-publishing.

Good luck with the project!

1. I have considered and would love to, currently 26. Started taking classes for accounting and already took some main classes for it, so sticking with that. If this was 8 years or so ago, I wouldn't hesitate to take a bigger focus on game development. At the moment, probably easier financially to keep my current path.

2. I would probably go with long term/permanent employment. It allows you to get a routine going so to speak. You get to know people and hone your craft better.

3. Hard question. I can see advantages to both, but I'll go with small/indie studio. Could lead to more freedom. Also you get to work with people more personally which would help with the production as a whole. And with the way it is now, it seems you can still have a good successful title without the big publisher push if the game is good.

4. I'm leaning slightly to the multiple projects over several years. This would lead to you getting more feedback on what's working for projects in the future. You can use that feedback to make better games for when you eventually do a bigger project.

5. I would go with self publish. Mostly for the same reasons for my answer in 3. It would give me more freedom and control.

1. Not a developer because I don't really like programming, but I did consider becoming a game designer.

2. Permanent.

3. Larger studio. It more depends on my particular role, really.

4. One large project.

5. In a (larger) company that self-publishes games.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

I've considered it, but am not currently a game developer. (I am a software engineer though)

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

I prefer the security of long term/permanent employment

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

Neutral. Having worked at small and large companies myself, both have their pros and cons that are equally valuable to experience.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

Neutral.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

I'd like to work in a self-publishing company. Having too many interested parties is a pain.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
I have considered it, but I am not currently a game developer.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
Permanent

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
Small studio.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
One project over several years.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
Self published.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

[/b]

1- I once did imagine myself becoming a game developer.

2- Definitely long term employment.

3- I think a small studio would be better.

4- Several different projects are better. All the eggs in one basket has killed many a developer.

5- Self publish if possible

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
Yes to both. Just me doing the work, but fellow Gaffer QisTopTier is a big part on the design bible right now for it and will be doing a ton of playtesting as I get further. All I can say is its a fighting game and I am years from anything.
2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
Long Term. I need stability.
3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
Depends on the role. I need creative freedom and I'm a niche gamer. If I was working on action titles or puzzle oriented stuff and had a lot of input then either works. Right now though I have to say Indie because I do what projectes I like and how I like it.
4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
One Large. I have more design bibles and notes than I can count for various things. I have a complete design bible for a wrestling game, several Pop 3 style games, various card games, action platformers, zelda style games, action games, musou games , etc etc etc...I design constantly. However, I prefer the polish and focus that comes with maintaining your thoughts on ONE project. You get cleaner results and more memorable moments in your game by not splitting your attention.
5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
Self Publishes. The problem with Partnerships is often you are at the mercy of the other company's time tables and changes in vision. I prefer things to be kept in house...I've seen to many studios have their projects mishandled by the demands of other publishers. Keep it under one roof and maybe folks can understand one another better is my hope. Besides...no one wants to have a great game and NO ONE wants to publish it for you. If you can self publish you can make what you want! No one wants to be stuck waiting their life for someone to believe in them.

1. Considered. No.
2. Long Term/Permanent
3. Small Indie
4. Several different projects
5. Publisher, mainly due to monetary reasons.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

I have considered it, one of the reasons I am studing CS at college, but I do not know if I want to go down that route, but video games are a huge passion for me, so I may end up there some day.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
I prefer long term/permanent employment.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
I would rather work at a AAA studio

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
I would like to work on several different projects

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
I would like working in a game that self-publishes games.

1. Not really seriously.
2. Permament
3. Depends on the studio itself, but just from the two, indie.
4. Multiple projects
5. Self-publishing.

1. Never considered being a game developer

2. I prefer permanent employment

3. I'd prefer a large AAA studio

4. Several different projects or else i'd get bored with one project.

5. Publisher as a partnership

1. Yes, but it would have to be in a writing/creative capacity as I don't know the first thing about coding/programming.

2. I would enjoy full-time employment if my job was good. If I hate the job I want to work the bare minimum hours to get by.

3. From where I'm coming from I wouldn't mind. I guess the end-game would be to work for a larger studio but I'd happily work anywhere in the games industry.

4. It would depend on the quality of the multiple projects but I'd say probably one project for a few years.

5. I don't know enough about the pros and cons of having a publishing to answer this properly :/

Thanks man!

1. Yes, but I haven't worked towards it at all.

2. Long term / permanent employment.

3. Probably a smaller studio.

4. A single project probably.

5. A company that self-publishes.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

Answer: One large project over several years.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Answer: Self Publishes

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
Yes, I've considered it.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
Long term employment.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
I would prefer to work at a small studio, although a few AAA studios, like Naughty Dog would be fantastic to work at, I think.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
I'm not exactly sure. I think that I would need to work on one project at a time. However, depending on how compartmentalized actual game development is, working across separate projects wouldn't be a problem. I'd prefer to continue working with the same time across each project though.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
I would probably prefer to work in self-publishing, I think, as long as the projects are kept rather small.
