Alright GAF!

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

1. Considered. I was planning on becoming one in high school, but I started into web design in my Senior year and got sidetracked. My dad wasn't really keen on the idea of me going into game design either, which definitely had an effect on my choice.

2. Freelance. Working freelance allows me to handle a variety of projects and be more free to push more aggressively for better pay, at least in web.

3. Small indie studio. If I was making games, I'd be doing it for personal enjoyment. Having to adjust my vision to someone else's marketing strategy doesn't appeal to me.

4. Not sure. It would depend on my team and the project itself.

5. Self-published. I don't think anyone would choose to have someone else publish their games if they could do it themselves. Ultimately, that's probably not how things work out though.

Thanks for this! Hope you don't get too overwhelmed.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

A: Yes I have considered attempting to put together a small game.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

A: Long term if happy and stable.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

A: Small but ambitious studio.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

A: One large project, provided that it was satisfying.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

A: Self Publish, in an ideal world, to avoid publisher pressure.

1. No
2. Long term / permanent employment
3. A large / AAA studio
4. Work on several different projects over the same course of time
5. Work in a company that self-publishes games

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
Definitely, but seeing as it's very mathematical (and I suck at maths), I'm afraid there's no career for me in game development.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
Long term employment, without a doubt. I'm not too keen on taking chances, I don't like a lot of change in general/

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
In the middle. If we're talking 300+ for AAA or 10 for Indie, I'd kinda want something like Bethesda (~100 key people).

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
One large project for several years. I suppose it really makes you immerse yourself in your own projects. Or of course there's the possibility you'd end up hating it.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
I think I wouldn't have a preference per se, but I suppose being able to publish your games yourself is nice.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Sure, I'll play too.

1. Yes, but not in the actual programming sense. I love to write, and have considered getting involved in the story side of things. If I had musical talent, I would probably try to get in that way, but I'm not a programmer.

2. Long term. I've been at my current place of employment for over three years.

3. If AAA and Indies are my only choices, I'd say indie. AAA development schedules don't sound like a good time to me.

4. Probably one large project. I'd like to see how that shapes over time and I think that would be more fulfilling to me.

5. I think I'd personally prefer to work for a company with a publisher. I think it would probably hurt if you have a game you work on that you believe in and potentially not get it out there.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

A: I've played with the idea of becoming one, but I prefer to keep it as a hobby. I'd be interested in getting into the industry with a different role though, perhaps working on marketing.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

A. I've not had much experience with contract-work, but I think I'd still prefer the safety of permanent/long-term.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

A. I'd prefer to work with/at a medium to large studio. It falls more in line with the wish for a safer, more permanent job position.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

A. I'm a creative type who likes to keep my fingers in a lot of pies (just ask my backlog), and so I'd prefer to work with several different projects. But if we were talking about something I'd be passionate about I'd be willing to do in hard on one project. But as a general answer, several.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

A. I'd be willing to try both since I don't have the experience to say what I actually prefer. But I think I'd go with having a publishing partner. It's less freedom, but more security and importantly it's a good way to build relations.

1. Yes / No

2. Permanent employment

3. Small studio

4. Several different projects over the same course of time.

5. Company that self-publishes games

1. Not seriously. I worked on several custom maps for Warcraft 3, HL1, HL2, Starcraft2, Crysis 2...

2. Permanent

3. Small/Indie

4. Longer projects

5. Self-published

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
Considered it yes

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
Long term or permanent

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
Indie studio

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
One project several years

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
Up to the company. But if the company is running well the freedom of self-publishing would be awesome

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

Sure, of course. When I was younger and starry-eyed about game development, I was like "YEAH I WANNA DO THIS" and all excited about the possibility of that avenue of work.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

In general, I like the idea of long-term employment for a little bit of security.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

Indie, really. Seems like, in this climate, you can get more creative control over your project that way.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

One large project. Make it a whole consuming magnum opus thing.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Probably self-publishing.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

I've given a lot of thought for a while, it has been my passion and took to me to study 3D modelling and Animation at College. I've currently done work to entertain myself so I've never done nothing outside of it. Have never been a game developer.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

I prefer permanent employment since that guarantees a paycheck and can sustain myself a whole lot better than thinking if contract or tenporary emplyment doesnt guarantee a lot for me and have to be on the lookout. I know I can make a name for myself in the contract way, but not really looking into it at first, until I see how everything works out.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

Both, since I can grow skills and learn new things at both of them.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

Hmmm this is a tough question, since it can mean work hard and this project but since it has been finished we are not rushing it out. Or work hard and fast, and dont sleep since we are working on a deadline. I like to have peace of mind on my work. I do everything on schedule and on time, but by my time.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Both again, since I can learn new stuff amd see how everything works out for me in both panoramas.

1. Yes, when I was young and naive and thought it was easy. Not anymore.

2. Long term. I like having the security.

3. Indie studio. Sure, money can be a problem, but fuck working in AAA game studio conditions.

4. Several projects at once.

5. Self publish.

Alright GAF! Here’s how it works: You can win a game of your choice, valued up to $60 USD. All you have to do is answer the five questions below and post your reply in this thread. All questions are in the yes/no or either/or formats, so answering them shouldn’t take long at all. My thought for this was that it should take less time than the “draw me an MS paint picture of…” competitions that have been on GAF before. Ideally, your answers should be concise and clearly indicate one side or the other (or neutral.) If you go into detail in such a way that makes it unclear which side of the fence you are on, I will mark it as neutral, but you will still be entered in the drawing as long as you answer each question.

If fewer than 50 people enter, I will choose one winner. If more than 50 people enter, I will choose two winners. I will put each entrant into a spreadsheet, and pull winning numbers from their cell assignment within that spreadsheet. As such, your entry number will not correspond to your post number in the thread. I can upload a short video of picking the random winners, showing the spreadsheet, so that you can be sure everything is on the level. I will be using random.org to pick the winning numbers.

The prizes can be distributed on the platform of your choice. If you are on PC, I will simply gift the game of your choice to you. If you are on Xbox or PlayStation, I will buy a digital gift card for $60 USD and give you the code. If you are on Nintendo platforms, I will buy a $50 and a $10 gift card and give both to you.

Unfortunately, this is currently open only to U.S. residents. (See edit below for more) I really wanted to do this internationally, but from the searching that I’ve done, both on GAF and the rest of the Internet, it appears that codes are region specific. If anyone can correct me on this or provide an easy solution, I would be happy to open this up internationally.

How long this runs is going to depend a lot on how quickly people enter. Ideally, I’d like to close it Monday, November 9th at noon PST (GMT -8.) Because I have to enter the data myself, I may have to close it earlier than that if there are just too many entries. Alternatively, if too few people enter, I may leave it open until Wednesday the 11th at the same time.

I'm doing all of this as part of a research project for a technical writing course. Your answers will be anonymous - I'll only use your username to distribute the prizes. In case anyone is wondering, I did run this idea by a mod before making this thread.

With all of that out of the way, here are the questions!

Edit: If you are confident that I can get a code / gift to you legally and easily (such as gifting on Steam internationally) feel free to enter. I am not limiting this to U.S. for analysis purposes, only to make sure that whoever enters and wins is able to get their prize without using VPNs or third-party key sellers. If you're confident that region restrictions won't hinder you from getting your prize from a U.S. resident, you are more than welcome to enter.

Edit 2: This is going a lot better than I imagined. As such, I'm going to close this drawing after the first 1000 entries or Monday the 9th at Noon PST, whichever comes first. This will help keep the odds of winning from being too microscopic, and will also ensure that I'm not spending the next 6 weeks compiling this data :)

1. No

1. I did dream of being a "game programmer" as a kid and entering Digipen, when I grew up, the dream just died out and I'm just a computer repair technician working freelance.

2. I prefer contracts.

3. I would prefer working at an indie studio, it seems more laidback (from an outsider perspective) than the underpaying AAA industry with their strict deadlines and crunch times.

4. I prefer working on several projects as to not get burned out.

5. Self-publisher.

If by any chance I win, I'm outside the US but my PSN account is US-based, and I've never had problems redeeming Steam gifts from US codes.

5. No Preference.

Apologies if it comes off as ambivalent; I'm actually a student in a game design program, so I suppose I'm more in the "Let's just actually do this thing" than the "pie in the sky" camp.

self-publish

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
YES
Like every creative endeavor, I considered it and consider it from time to time. I'm just too much of a loser to, in fact, create. And yes, that pains me a lot.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
Permanent employment

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
Indie
There is power in number, but I will go for indie, as a small independent team has more choice on what they create.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
Large project
I'm maybe the overambitious type, but doing several small projects doesn't strike me as particularly interesting.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
Self-publisher
Same logic as the indie question, I suppose a partnership will have notable drawbacks in the creative process.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
Yes, I have taken programming classes.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
Long term work makes feel secure.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
Large

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
Several different projects

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
Self-publishes

1. I've done some development work at a professional level, but have since started to pursue other employment, something with stable pay while game development projects take more of a hobby role. The stress from trying to make a living off of it is starting to make me dislike the medium, and I don't want that.

2. I enjoy long-term, permanent work; something with guaranteed stability and possibly benefits.

3. Worked at a studio before doing VFX and didn't care for it; I've done small projects with a very small group and the work is much more satisfying that way.

4. Definitely different projects running at the same time. You can reach a point on a project where the only way forward is something painfully tedious, or you'll get stuck and not sure what to do; for those times, having another project to work on helps to pace the work and may help to re-invigorate your motivation to work on the previous project again.

5. While I enjoy the safety-net of having a publisher, I also enjoy the thrill of having one project fund the next, so I would self-publish if it seems like a realistic option. If this seems to fly in the face of my answer for #2, it's because I'm not too sure what I want myself. :S

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

Yes, for a time, when I was a lot younger, I thought it was my dream job.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

Either. Work is work.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

Smaller studio.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

Several different projects. Keep things diverse, ideas fresh.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Publishing partner. Ensures or at least, hopefully ensures that the game will reach its audience.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

Yes. Considering becoming one after finishing college and if I get the opportunity.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

Long Term or permanent

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

My choice would be middle tier development like Gust, Falcom, some of Square Enix studios and so on. Between indie and AAA, I guess AAA.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

Depends on my function. If I were to be a programmer, probably would work in a single title for a couple of years. If I were a project manager, I guess I would try to work into 2 or 3 different projects.

My goal is to, someday, act as a project manager., so I think working into multiple projects is better.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

I would like to work with one that has a publisher.

1-Yes, I tought about it, since in my college you get to choose your engineering degree in your third year, i went for mechanical engineering, but I always loved how Computer engineers had some courses about making games on unity ( I just did small things on python or java).

2-Long term

3-Indie studio, I know that would be harder, but in small studio you would be a "bigger part" of that game.

4-It really depends, I'd love to participate on various projects and learning different things with different people, but as I said before, i love the idea of helping with a big part of something (specially if it is succesful).
If I need to pick one, then various projects.

5-Self-publisher.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

I'm a software developer but I do not work in games. I'm sure I've considered getting into games in the past, but I like my current focus quite a bit.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

Long term.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

I'm not sure never having tried either. If I had to guess I'd probably want to spend a few years with access to a lot of people in a AAA studio, learn what I can, then maybe join a smaller one.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

Several projects has always worked better for me. Being able to switch when you hit a wall is really helpful for me in terms of productivity.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Self-publishing I guess just based on my casual observations. It seems as though in general publishers tend to produce more games but self-publishing tends to produce better games.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

1. Yes. I have considered this but the market is much too saturated for this to be my realistic viewpoint.
2. Long-term employment. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing that tomorrow work might not come.
3. Small / indie studio. It would be boring pumping out the same Assassins Creed, Call of Duty, and Madden every year. Small indie groups give you so much more freedom and input.
4. Different products over the same time. Working on the same thing forever is dull. If I get a choice, let me work on different things.
5. Publisher as a partnership. That extra money, yo.

1.When I was younger, I did. It was that or becoming a wrestler. Neither happened lol.
2.Permanent employment that way I know that I will have a steady pay check.
3.Working in a smaller studio would be better simply because I would get to know everyone.
4.Work on different projects. Maybe 2-3 years per project so we won't become stuck.
5.I'd prefer to work with a company that self publishes.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
-not seriously, no.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
-neutral on this

-small/indie, I suppose

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
-one large project

Permanent.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio? Small.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
Large Project

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Self publishes

1. No

2. permanent employment

3. small / indie studio

4. several different projects over the same course of time

5. a company that self-publishes games

Thanks for doing this contest!

1. No, because when I went through my Computer Science degree in college, I learned early on that I hate coding of any kind.

2. Permanent

3. AAA studio since you'll probably get the most rounded experience and use the latest tools.

4. 1 large project so I can have more impact.

5. One with a publisher.

1. Nope, never considered it. Learned at an early age that "do what you love" doesn't apply to me, since turning something I enjoy as a hobby into work that I am forced to do ruins it, like when I considered a career in music in High School.

2. Long term/permanent for sure. 90% of the reason I chose to go to medical school is for long term job security and long term employment. Not the most altruistic reason to chose the medical field, but helping people is definitely a great side benefit.

3. Hard to tell, I can't say I know enough about the dev side of either to chose. Probably AAA as a job, just in terms of monetary security and consistency, indie would just be too great a risk to hang my entire livelihood on.

4. Almost certainly several different projects. I have somewhat of a short attention span.

5. Probably publisher, but really hard to say for sure.

1) No

2) Long-term/permanent employment :)

3) Small Indie studio. I just think it'd be more casual and down to earth. More intimate with strong bonds between co-workers.

4) Several different projects unless the one big project is something totally new and groundbreaking. Id make the sacrifice for a really big idea.

5) I think it'd be fun to be self-publishing as we could make our own deals and decisions and wouldn't have to worry about another entity that we could potentially upset as our partner. I'd have to be okay with having a smaller presence but hopefully we could inspire some real fans who would carry us to a higher level.

Thanks for the cool contest! :)

1. Definitely considered it, but went down another path in college (film)
2. Permament
3. Small studio
4. Several different projects to keep things fresh.
5. Either way. I'm not sure of the advantages and disadvantages of either.
