Answer five short questions for a chance to win a $60 game (Now Closed)

1.) Yes, yes.
2.) Contract.
3.) Large
4.) One large project over the course of several years.
5.) Publisher as partner,

1. When I was very young, but never seriously

2. Long term/permanent employment

3. Small indie -- I'd assume you'd have more creative input

4. One large project

5. Self-published, though both have their advantages

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
No

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
Right now, contract. When I settle down, I'll probably prefer permanent.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
Small/indie probably, but work culture and my interest in the kind of game we make would matter more to me.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
One large project

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
Self-publishing, ideally

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
No, I enjoy gaming as a hobby too much and I felt I might grow to dislike or hate it after working as a developer over time.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
Long term, I enjoy stability and getting to know my co-workers over longer periods of time.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
At this point working for a smaller studio is much more appealing. AAA games seem like a mindless factory with less creativity due to being driven more by money and appeasing stockholders. I imagine the grind is generally a bit less stressful not working on an AAA game as well.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
One project would probably be my preference as a developer. It would seem to be challenging enough to develop one game as it is.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
I dont really have a strong opinion on this one. I guess ill say it would be preferable to gave a publisher as that might help the chances of your game eventually seeing the light of day and to a larger audience.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
I have considered it but find it more of a hobby.
2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
Permanent.
3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
Small/indie.
4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
Several different projects.
5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
Self publishes.

Either

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

A. Yes, during college I dabbled in game development under a teacher's tutoring, but ended up not pursuing it because I was already working in another field (stil a programmer, though). Game dev has been a dream job ever since I was a kid.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

A. Long term.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

A. Indie or small studio, 'cause I believe they have much more freedom to experiment and produce innovative content, and have a more personal and intimate work environment, even though their resources may be much more limited.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

A. Several different projects, as long as I could begin and finish something on each one.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

A. Self-published.

1. Yes, I am currently working towards it.

2. Long term.

3. Both choices are ideal.

4. One project at a time.

5. Either would be okay with me.

Thanks for the questions and the opportunity!

Sure why not?

With all of that out of the way, here are the questions!

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

1. I've made game demo's in the past, but I have never committed myself to making a full game. No I am not a game developer. I have been thinking about pulling the trigger of making my own game though.

2. Contract. Definitely contract.

3. Small studio.

4. That really depends on the project that I would be working on. But preferably smaller projects.

5. This makes no difference to me.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
NO

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
Long term permanent

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
Small indie

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
One large project

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
self-publishes

1. I am not a game developper, but I considered becoming one when I was younger.

2. I prefer the stability of long-term employment.

3. Probably at a small indie studio. Less financial freedom, but no one else to please but yourself and your teams regarding the vision of the game you have.

4. I think I would prefer working on one large project.

5. A company that self-publishes games. I think it allows them to protect their franchises and avoid killing them because of bad marketing/business model.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

I did at one point, but decided against it since I don't think I would be able to handle the insane workload.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

Long term permanent jobs, the added job security is very nice.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

I small/indie studio so I would have more say so and input into the final product rather just following orders.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

One large project over several years because I really enjoy seeing a project through its inception until the end and enjoying the progress that project has made.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

I would prefer to work in a company that has a publisher just because it would ensure that my game would reach a much larger audience.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
>Like not really ever seriously, maybe when I was younger and didn't really know what went into it.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
>If I did work in the field, I'd imagine I'd prefer long term employment.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
>I mean from an employment perspective, I'd imagine a AAA studio would be a safer bet, but in a hypothetical scenario like this, I'd probably go indie.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
>I'd probably start with smaller projects and build up to larger one when we were more secure.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
>I'd probably prefer some kind of partnership to support that games we made since that'd also probably help distribution.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

No.

One large project.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

One that has a publisher.

For some reason I thought you'd have to be good at math/logic/coding to study game design, and my brain doesn't do that shit. Still not sure if that's really true or not.

This is a pretty common misconception. It definitely doesn't hurt to have knowledge in math and coding, but it's far from necessary, unless of course you really want to be a game programmer. There are lots of other positions in the world of game development like design, modeling, animation, effects, writing, UI, QA, sound and many more.

These would be some cool questions to go more into depth with after we're done here; especially with people who are currently working in the industry. I imagine depending on your role answers vary wildly.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

1. Yes, i am current in a programming / game development program at my school

2. Permanent employment preferred for peace of mind. Contract for the ability to work on a wide variety of projects not limited to a single company.

3. A large studio. There's a lot of potential to learn from a large pool of your field and the notion you could end up working on the next killer app or on new technology that is coming out.

4. Multiple projects are more desirable. While its nice to have a set focus on one goal, its far more interesting to be able to diverisfy your work pallet. There is always the possibility you could burn out of become disinterested in repeating the same work over and over again.

5. Self-publisher. From what i have viewed in the past, in my opinion publishers may have some influence on a companies work and what they should work on. There has been many quality games or series that have suffered in direction and and quality or even flat out dropped. Dead space for example once the shift to EA was made.
Profit is always the goal but it may not be a healthy environment if you have two differing opinions on how to achieve that goal while keeping true to what was originally envisioned or as to what you want to work on.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

I casually daydream about a specific idea I've had for a while. My understanding is that the budget for such a game is huge enough and the general idea is unique enough, that I will wait for other successes in my life to have it come to fruition. I honestly believe that people who go out their way to be game developers despite the software development industry being so lucrative, as entertainment heroes. I respect every single one of them.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

I prefer temporary employment. But then again, I haven't graduated yet and all I have done is be a waiter whilst attending Uni. Despite this, I hope to run my own business after I graduate. I couldn't really stand permanent employment unless I was married etc.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

I would like to work in a large AAA studio, but only if I'm overseeing the project. Otherwise, being in a small indie studio would be better to pour out my passions.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

One large project, for sure.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

I think this answer is the same as Q3. If it were a large AAA company I would prefer to have the company self-publish the game, and vice versa. You know, I understand that this doesn't really happen, but that's what I would prefer.

1. Yes I've considered it, and I am currently not a game developer.

2. No, I prefer long-term, permanent employment.

3. Small/Indie studio.

4. One large project over the course of several years.

5. A company that has a publisher in a partnership (of course, depends on the terms of that partnership).

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

Only as kid/early teen, never as an adult.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

I have enjoyed both at various times, the freedom and differences of working at several places as a temp/contract is great, but nowdays I prefer the security and stability of long term/permanent employment.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

AAA/large studio, feels like it would more secure, though that doesn't seem all guaranteed unless you work for blizzard or the like either.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

Multiple Different Projects.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Publisher.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

Yes. I got a Bachelor's Degree on Videogame Design (no programming sadly) but there is no job here for me.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

The idea would be long term/permanent

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

Indie cause I want the more laid back flow of indie development.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

I think I rather work on 2 projects at the same time. There might be times where things get exhausting and need a small break and working on something else would help cool off to return back to the main project.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Self published.

1) I'm currently an amateur game developer, hoping to get more practice in and become a commercial developer.

2) Long-Term Employment, when it is feasible.

3) A small studio. I'd be scared of becoming a cog in the machine for a game like Assassin's Creed, and smaller studios are able to move (relatively) faster onto newer projects, instead of the lengthy build-up on a large studio's AAA production.

4) As I said above, I would rather contribute to several projects, hopefully meaningfully.

5) That's a toughie. Self-publishing is getting easier, but is still a challenge. Being partnered with a publisher makes things easier, and opens more doors to distribution and promotion, but eats more into profits, and puts you more in danger of losing licenses, more forced creative oversight, and buy-outs that force the developer into churning out the same series over and over, or killing them off. I would have to say self-publishing is slightly preferred, but not always realistic.

1. Yes. Currently a freelancer, working towards full time.
2. Long Term. Stability is hard to come by and is quite valuable.
3. Indie. Possibly contradicts my above answer, but having more creative control is very gratifying.
4. Large project. I like to invest myself fully into one big idea.
5. Publisher. I want to focus on the game and let someone else focus on money and marketing.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

1. Absolutely have considered and am currently enrolled to get a Computer Systems and Information with a Web Game Focus degree. Basically, I can make web browser and mobile phone type games down the road. I considered going for much more and I may expand to a full game design degree some day, but I just want my foot in the door to see how it goes with options to do other things.

2. Contract/temp. Full time permanent gives you a lot of great things, but contract often allows me to work at home and you can stack multiple contracts at once if you have the time, creating far more income opportunities. Of course, this depends on the sort of work you're looking for.

3. I think ideally I'd like to work at Nintendo because of how they treat their employees and simply being a lifetime fan. However, I'd probably like it better working for a smaller team or even self publishing.

4. I think ideally, one large project with maybe a side project just to get my mind off the large one when I get frustrated. So basically - one huge project with a little side project of my own.

5. Self publish. This is mostly because it gets rid of some of the disconnect between publishers and developers - where a publisher can tell you to say, cut out content for DLC because their market research says "you make more money" that way, while a self published studio can worry more about the game itself. Profits are important, but quality products will hopefully sell themselves so you don't have to follow market trends to a T with how you release a product.

1. I am not currently deciding to be a game developer but it is one of my options for later down the line.
2. long term
3.Indie since AAA's have no soul.
4. Large project
5.Publisher(I would like to work for either Take Two, Nintendo, or Sony).

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

1) Considered. At one point, when needing a change in careers, I did seriously consider it. It was one of two things I was deciding between, but ultimately chose not to go down that path.

2) Long-term/permanent

3) I'd have to say small indie, as I feel I'd have more responsibility and input.

4) Several different projects, assuming they come to fruition in the same manner as the one large project

5) Self-publish

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

I would love to being involved in the development of at least one game at some point in my life.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

I prefer to work with a contract.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

If working at a small studio meant that I would have more control over the project then I would prefer that.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

I would prefer working on a large project over the course of several years.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

A partnership with a publisher sounds best to me.

Good luck to everyone.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

1. I am not a game developer. I did consider it, but instead went with a CIS degree with an emphasis on Networking.

2. I prefer permanent employment. I have done contract work, but I do not like the idea of my income being based off of contract work.

3. Small Studio. I currently work for a small post-production company, and not having to worry about clocking in, or counting my sick days/vacation days makes my very stressful job much easier.

4. I would prefer to work on one large project. Currently my company works on lots of smaller projects.

5. Self-publishing. Having to answer to someone else about the work I'm creating does not sound enjoyable.
