Anyone else buying the Slim over the Pro?

It is over 2 times the GPU power over the original PS4 with improvements promised for 1080p players. I played Ratchet and Clank recently on PS4. Game is not too far from CG quality if you don't look too closely. When they release the PS4 Pro patch I am pretty sure it is going to be pretty difficult to separate real time from prerendered cutscscene for this game, unless you freeze-frame.

If you don't have a PS4 and it is only $50 and you can afford it go the Pro.

While I still did not 100% decide on this and will at least wait until the Pro is available including reviews... I heavily lean towards the PS4 slim.

Now some background... I do not have any PS4 system yet. I have comfortably settled to WiiU, PC and handhelds (PS Vita, 3DS) the last few years (and lots of retro games available on those systems), holding back on the purchase of a PS4 because I wanted to see what the 'Neo' is all about. I also have no intention to upgrade my TV set to 4K yet, the jump to HDTV was the one and only time I've ever replaced a TV without the old device being broken or unusable. I am very sensitive towards "upgrading costs" if they can be avoided (e.g. I also do not partake in the smartphone upgrade game) and energy efficiency and system stability (meaning I prefer second or optimised revisions of devices). Also, while I am interested in it, I don't think I will get myself a VR set within the next 1-2 years.

That said, I also would in general like to get the best possible experience. Some of those best experiences, I can get on PC. I like several of the PS4 exclusives and play a lot of Japanese games, which is why I still want a PS4 at some point (e.g. Gravity Rush 2, Valkyria Chronicles, King of Fighters 14, Persona 5, Yakuza 0/6, Nioh, Nier, Musou games and so on). But - most of my interests are more within niche genres or franchises which likely won't profit -as much- from a better PS4 without a 4K TV. Adding to this, the PS4 Slim sits at half the energy consumption of the PS4 Pro (saving energy/money in the long run) and seems to be very quiet. I'd probably rather get a good deal for the PS4 slim and use the saved money to invest in a couple of more PS4 games or put it towards the Nintendo NX.

But as I said in the beginning, I am still waiting for the PS4 pro to come out and read impressions/reviews on that. I've waited long enough for a potential PS4 purchase, I can wait a bit longer.

The one thing I'm concerned for future releases is a Hyrule Warriors 3DS situation. Yes it'll run on the PS4, but it will run at a steady 15-20 fps.

The omission of a 4K Bluray drive is a deal breaker. No PS4 Pro for me.

PS4 games already look great on the standard console. I'm happy with the standard model.

There's really no need for the pro without a compatible TV. And you've said you won't be getting one anytime soon.

The enthusiasts on here will insist on pro because of frames and resolution. But really, the skim will do. And you get an extra pad and fifa.

There's your nights in with your mates sorted. Won't be much fun showing your mates the pro with marginal graphic improvements and one pad to play.

Go with the slim.

I'd rather have it and not need it. I didn't think I was going to buy a 4K tv either. Then I caught a killer deal on a high end 4K Samsung. For $100 more, I'd rather future-proof personally.

I would not count on this happening any time soon on the PS4. Especially not on a AAA game. A niche game maybe, but i doubt AAA would want to upset the install base of existing PS4 users. Even n3DS hasn't this only happened on one title?

.

Don't do this to yourself, man.

I think I might. I mostly play new games on my PC and I only want a PS4 for a handful of games (Bloodborne, KoF 14, Star Ocean (don't laugh)) so I don't really see the benefit of paying an extra $100 for one or two Sony exclusives to maybe run slightly better.

The performance bump is going to be marginal. If someone is okay with slumming it at 1080P 30FPS already, then I don't see why they'd spend an extra 100 bucks to slum it at 1080P 30FPS with marginally better textures.
You don't know what you're talking about. I wish people wouldn't just make up stuff they "feel" to be true!

I'm also getting the Slim. I think games on the standard PS4 look fine and i don't plan on buying a 4k TV anytime soon, so it's a no brainer for me.

As others have said it's a no brainier to go for the pro. Would anybody buy the GTX 1060 if the GTX 1080 was only $100 more? That's the sort of relative performance difference we are talking about so to me it makes no sense to go with the slim.

I would buy the Pro over the slim if it was my first PS4. Even if you don't have a 4k HDTV, you will still be noticing improvements on 1080p. So why not invest the extra 100 for that and maybe that 4K HDTV in the future.

Buying the slim would just be gimping yourself and personally it would bother me if I see future games running/looking better on the Pro.

Why are you buying 1 ShamWow for $9.99 when you can get 2 for $14.99, OP? This deal is too good to pass on!

I aint buying that pro either, and if non-pro releases start being flabby and sick comparitively I just wont buy anything Playstation anymore

Get what you can comfortably afford. Personally, it'll be a Pro for me this holiday. Knowing that there's a better way out there to experience these games? No way, I couldn't handle that. LOL I get that that can be applied to PC, but this is a $400 box, not a $1200 Titan X Pascal video card.

Kotaku said benefit is marginal for those who don't own 4K TVs fyi
Well that sorts it, thanks Kotaku!

In all seriousness having 2x the GPU power, it doesn't take a genius to know there will be massive graphical benefits to owning a Pro no matter what resolution you play at.

I'm getting the Slim because

  1. I simply value the lower power consumption and the presumably less noise of the PS4 Slim more than the extra power of the PS4 Pro, especially after having an extremely noisy fat PS3 which eventually went YLOD.
  2. Pretty much all PS4 games I'm interested in will run at 1080p 60fps on the original PS4 (Yakuza 0, Nier: Automata, Persona 5 and so on) which suits me fine since I have a 1080p TV. So buying a PS4 Pro for 4K and extra performance is for me pointless.
  3. The Slim is a lot smaller which is great for where I'm putting it - the Pro would have to stand up where the space is - which I'm never keen on doing.

I was going to get a Slim just to play Last Guardian day 1, but since that's delayed I have no reason to not get a Pro. Especially since it comes out right before FFXV.

I hope/expect that Last Guardian will run better on the Pro, maybe even a higher frame rate? Keeping my fingers crossed.

If I get anything it will be a regular ps4 or slim ps4. 4k displays need another year to marinate anyway, and I'm not paying that much for something I'll use for less than a year before Scorpio comes out. Still trying to decide if I want to play anything Sony has coming.

At this point there's no way I'd get a slim over a pro. But if you are certain you want the slim id wait another month or two and see if they have any good holiday bundles.

There seems to be a lot of talk about the quality of the Pro output on existing games and new 1080p games but do we actually know this for sure? Are we really going to see such a jump on everything to justify that cost?

With Scorpio coming out in Holiday 2017 I'm going to hold off on either. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony updates the Pro with a 4k BD Drive and that would be an instant buy.

For me the Pro seems like the best choice, not because i care much for the graphics difference but the price of the Slim is simply a joke.

OK thanks. I was hoping it would, because it would help justify the extra $$ if I didn't have to buy a 4K bluray player down the road.
Just left Best Buy... They may have had 20 total 4K Blu-Rays. Even on Amazon, the selection seems super sparse.

You might not ever need to buy a 4K Blu-Ray player ever, with the ever growing popularity of digital media over physical. Seems like some major movie publishers are still in "wait and see mode" for 4K BRs.

Digital media :puke:

I would say find a decent bundle on a "regular" PS4. Definitely sales will be going on for retailers to clear out the remaining stock.

Honestly, the Slim makes little sense to me at the moment. If the $100 really is a big deal to you, i'd buy one of the used PS4's which will undoubtedly flood the market in the next few months at a price far less than $299 and basically perform as well as the Slim. OG PS4 isn't that large in the first place, and you'll probably rarely notice it anyways after the first few days you have it.

If the choice is between Slim and Pro, I'd go Pro in almost every case. For $100 you get twice the hard drive, much better performance (at 1080p and 4k) and it's future proofing for whatever comes down the line. I'm not saying existing PS4 owners should definitely get the Pro, but for new owners it makes a lot more sense to get the better system for just $100 more. If you want to just get in to the PS4 ecosystem and $ is an issue, buy used as they'll be real cheap and perform on par with the Slim.

Cant wait till I get the uncharted slim bundle. My reason for choosing slim over pro is the low wattage for long hours of play, reduced fan noise and lowering the heat of the system which is perfect for my hot little room. I do plan to eventually get the pro but after there are really good 4k tvs at a low price, i see a lot of games i like actually do something with power because sony said before its up to them, and a good bundlebto buy.

Wait for 1st revision of the pro model or grab the uncharted OG unit (revised original model). It always seems like a good idea to skip the original designs of consoles as there always ends up being some compromise.

The slim would not be an option for me over the OG uncharted model.

I'll be grabbing the Slim (on Black Friday) to replace my PS4 here. Can't justify dropping $400 on a high end machine that will play games worse than my PC build and won't even play 4K blu-rays like my XB1S. The Pro is pointless to me.

The Pro is $500 in Canada, and with my tax rate, it goes for $560.

Yeah...I'm not paying 560 for a console with no bundled games.

Even though the Slim is tempting me, I'll just play the waiting game for now.

This thread has informed me that the Slim is $300, making it a clear buy from me in the future when I have disposable income. Thanks!
