Anyone Else Think Super Smash Bros. Wii U Sucks?

YES!

And I'm like the biggest fan of 64 and Melee, but while Brawl was a disappointment, Smash 4 (on both systems) was just a HUGE downgrade for me.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Sakurai is someone who's given way too much freedom, where he just tries to shove in everything including the kitchen sink, regardless if it's well thought out and top-quality or not. Then there's the awful long development times when Melee was 13 months (I know how that affected Sakurai, I wouldn't want that to happen to him again).

Melee had a harsh deadline as said, but they made sure that EVERY aspect of it was an utter joy. It wasn't perfect, but everything just took what was awesome in 64, made it better, and added cool new stuff in it also.

Smash 4 didn't even have much of a major adventure mode at all. Smash Tour was horrendous and even with that so called tutorial, I couldn't understand it at all. The visuals, despite being 1080p and 60fps on Wii U were pretty bad IMO, I mean what were they thinking with characters like DK for instance?

Trophies were really lazy when so many of them are practically Wii-grade models (and often mere rips at that) when in Melee, a huge chunk of them were very high-poly and felt like they were showcases of what the hardware could do at the time.

Classic mini-games like Break the Targets were completely changed (into Angry Birds? What?), there's still the missing Race to the Finish and Board the Platform mini-games from earlier entries.

Music, like Brawl, and so overdone where it's like 50% reused tracks and the rest is composed by like a dozen composers. When the 4 from HAL in Melee utterly blows them all out of the water to me. I cannot believe that Brawl had 41 composers and was still inferior to Melee's soundtrack IMO.

This is why I really hope Smash 4 does not get a Switch port and they just jump straight into 5 and go all-out in terms of pushing the system (Unreal 4 would be a great fit as BN already use it), I remember playing Soul Calibur 2 on GC and wanting Smash 3 to emulate that look, well what a coincidence! Do that with Smash 5 BN! :P

I know a lot love Smash 4, but man did I not like it, I mean it's DECENT, but that's the most I can say honestly.

I also just really miss HAL being in the series. :(

I love it, excellent title. The roster is the best by far with snake being the only character I miss. The customs and equipment were amazing but they needed better implementation. Solid title screw the haters

My only complaint is the same one I generally have with Smash...too many items that straight up kill and too many stage hazards that straight up kill. Weapons and hazards are great but this shit started with smash balls and turned casual fun (and fuck off casuals MAKE money for developers more than FGC) into a game of capture the smash ball. Matches aren't as fun as they once were in casual sets now because you see folks either lose to stages and die to every item or pokeball and whine or make a ton of house rules to avoid it.

Just rebalance hazards and items on damage is all I ask. Nintendo made the same shit mistake with hazards on Mario Kart battle mode stages back on the Wii.

Played it over a friend's house and felt no urge to buy it myself

shit was lacking af. The 3DS version however was great and the definitive version

The single player content sucks, but the multiplayer doesn't. I do think it's far too defensive / time consuming and I'd prefer a nicer medium from offense to defense than what we got, but it's enjoyable.

On 8-players:

Uh oh. The fun-extraction process is radically different here. Further analysis is needed.

Personally, I'm the kind of guy who adores the much-maligned chaos in stage hazards and whatnot to the extent where I find much of the complaints to be rather overblown; in the case of 8-Player, I find it easy to keep track of my character and since there's a lot more going on, I'm always marveling at the constant hilarity or different forms of strategy involved (how many people can I capture in a Final Smash, for instance). I welcome its presence in Classic Mode; still don't get people's beef with that, either.

Supposing Smash Switch is real (and it probably is), I'm hoping the improved hardware allows for the rest of the stages and the non-Omega versions to be playable (And the prospect of 3DS stages being there too, ooh...)

As a casual player it was the first one to really grab me and I loved it. None of the other Smash games really did it for me, but Smash WiiU clicked for me.

I found the single player and side-mode stuff more lacking than Melee and Brawl, that's for sure. Still wish there was a tag-team mode, it makes too much sense in a Smash Bros games to take my best 3 against someone else's best 3. I'm also really missing the Great Fox stage. Online still leaves a lot to be desired...

....but it's still an excellent game. Had a lot of good times with it. With Smash 4 already set up as a base, I hope the Switch version just infuses tons of new modes, online, characters and courses without touching the rest. Otherwise we'll be waiting years for another one.

For those hating on 8 player Smash, you are all wrong. Nothing better than teaming up with a friend to take on 6 pokemon.

Great post, 100% agree

We got a Wii U and I play it for an hour a day at lunch pretty much every day, and pretty often after work as well. I've made a load of good friends through playing this game, and I love watching pro tournaments as well.

So basically, I don't think it sucks. Probably my favourite multiplayer game of all time.

From a single player content point of view it's pretty mediocre but the sheer amount of characters/ ways to play multi player is probably the best in the series.

I play the game competitively so I'm gonna be slightly biased :x

I really can't get behind this because it means we'll be waiting for YEARS until Smash 5. It doesn't have to be released as a Smash 4 Deluxe Edition, they can just give it a subtitle and blur the line between sequel and remaster if they want.

They are probably best of just polishing up the presentation in Smash 4, adding all the modes we both missed, a handful of new characters and courses, and then release it on Switch. Hopefully this year. And hopefully they simply continue with DLC through-out this generation.

There is really no need to start from scratch again.

It has pretty good mechanics and is utterly gorgeous, but it's too easy to defend imo and the basic smash distance is too low (I like to play at 1.3x). Couple that with tons of poor stages, some weak additions to the roster, tons of overpriced DLC and absolutely dire single player content and there's a lot to dislike about it.

Melee is better in pretty much every way, and I say that as a total casual who has never played a competitive round in his life. At least they got rid of Snake.

Content wise it's pretty terrible, and the stages are even worse than Brawl's.

This is my big problem with Smash 4. The stages are boring and feel like many of them were designed with pro play in mind. Make your game fun first and if it's good enough then pro players will get behind it.
Despite my problems with Smash 4's stage designs I overall think it's my favorite in the series.

My problems with Smash 4 are that it lacks what makes Melee so great. It doesn't feel good to move around in Smash 4, there isn't dash dancing, wavedashing, or and options from the ledge. The combo systems in Smash 4 is terrible, and incredibly unsatisfying. Melee has a free flowing, hard hitting punish game that is truly unequaled. Melee rewards smart offensive play, Smash 4 rewards rolling, airdodging, shieldgrabs, and other lame defensive options. The character balance in Smash 4 is infuriating, rather than make characters fun to play, they just nerf everyone. In Melee, the best characters have really cool strengths, counteracted by exploitable weaknesses. In Smash 4, everyone has some bland moves that are all nerfed to hell so that every character sucks. Couple all this with terrible stage selection, and the stupidest ledge mechanics in all of smash, and you have a really unsatisfying package.

I was with you 100% but then.you do this to me man. :(

Sorry dude. I'm kidna a "Nintendo characters only" hardliner. Even Sonic and Mega Man are too much for me, so Snake was just a massive, massive NOPE. Doesn't fit in terms of style or anything. And I absolutely love Solid Snake as a character, too. Just not for Smash.

Despite my problems with Smash 4's stage designs I overall think it's my favorite in the series.

There are only 5 competitively viable stages in the whole game. If anything it needs more stages designed for pro play, not less. The majority of the stage list is just garbage that isn't good for casual or competitive play.

The game sucks. It just doesnt feel fun moving around. I cant stand the lack of momentum when you jump, the floaty physics, and how easy it is to recover.

Brawl and SSB4 lost what made the first 2 games special in my opinion.

I dunno, I thoroughly enjoyed playing it.

It's the Smash game where I got the most opportunities to play local multiplayer too, which certainly helps.

Exactly. It doesn't matter whether you're pro (not me) or casual (me & family), if the game is trying to substitute "dealing with stage hazards" for "interesting fighting gameplay" then there's a huge problem, and way too many stages do that.

Sakurai needs to learn that stages that shift subtly during a match are good to keep things fresh, but stages where dealing with that stage becomes 50% of the match are NOT fun, for casuals or pros. I love Pyrosphere's design, but once Ridley shows up the match is all about him. Why not just leave him out? The stage is fine without him. Way too much of that kind of shit. The yellow monster on Mega Man's stage is possibly the worst offender. Another great stage ruined.

Also, stages with autoscrolling backgrounds are simply too busy in many cases to be readable.

It doesn't suck. It's improved upon Brawl in almost every way, but gameplay-wise it's still significantly behind Melee and even 64.

It's kind of a shame that SSB4 is the upper limit for how fast the physics will be from here on out.

The pricing is on-par with other fighting games, so I don't really see the problem.

A hazard toggle would go a long way and would have been better for both casual and competitive players than Omega stages, but Sakurai has no interest in doing that.

List wars? Sure.

1. Melee
2. Project M
3. Smash 4
4. Smash 64
5. Brawl

I can kind of agree with this list. Smash 4 and 64 are interchangable. But I mostly just like 64 Falcon, and don't find it as enjoyable in general now that it's Dreamland-only competitively.

Fantastic game but still not nearly as good as melee. The only thing that truly sucks about the game is that it doesn't have the Ice Climbers.
