That in itself is sad. That political topics get the most action on a fucking video game site. Not that the other place is any better.

Online gaming discussion is pretty much dead. I’ve been a heavy poster on game forums for over 20 years. I think this month will be the end for me and I’m setting getting the fuck off the internet as my sole resolution for next year. It’s just too much drama and long sense stopped being escapist fun.
Get out of my head!

At around mid summer of 2017 I noticed that I was discussing games less and just arguing about the idea of discussing games. What drew me to places like GAF and other much smaller forums dedicated to games was dying or already dead when it came to game discussion. NeoGAF happened to contain many interests outside of gaming for me and so I found myself staying longer than I would if it was just game related.

Fast forward to now and I think I somehow missed the boat on what game discussion has become. I don't know when, what, where, why or how I came to this conclusion but I really am detached from the general idea of game discussions and how it happens now. I am a rather sarcasticly dry asshole in general but things at this point have hit the level of drama I can only associate with my early teen years. People seem to actually like to hate hobbies more than like to like or love hobbies they participate it. I never really left GAF after the massive exodus happened I just did not particpate in it because honestly I did not know where to start or how to approach discussing the hobby in a way that did not leave me burned out.

I particpate in both forums. I am not as vocal in either as I was at one point and I find the evolution of what has happened here to be somewhat bittersweet. I appreciate the restructure and redesign and I find the segmentation of politcs to a third section of the site to actually be a massive improvement. I like the idea and direction the site moderation has laid out as a goal and the slower pace of thread movement now. I think my love of gaming and sharing that love and interest of the hobby for me has transitioned more to a smaller group of people that I have met over the years that happen to have all migrated to a dark corner of discord. With all of that said I do believe there will be a general uptick in usage and posting when more people realize GAF is still around for the long run and that moderation as well as discussion has become less pick a side and more open in general.

People here seem to *HATE* Resetera but the forum topic here about Resetera is the most active one? What's hard to understand?
To be honest resetera is something that *must* be talked about.

Leaving aside the Resetera hate you can see in NeoGAF, Resetera in itself have some issues, from its mod team to the mold you have to adjust yourself in order to *not* get banned.

And don't get me started on the moral superiority position they adopt once you disagree with almost anyone over there. It makes really hard to debate anything (If you manage to not get warned/banned)

And don't you dare to use equivalences to try explaining your point!

And... and... holy fuck, i could keep writing for at least half an hour.

It makes me feel really sad because i'm leftist at heart, but there's still some points of view i find quite extreme over there and i tried to debate. It didn't go well. At all.

Which points of view on Era do you find extreme as a leftist?
Let's see... the most egregious for me it's their approach to sexism. It's not "there should be an option for that" but "IT SHOULD BE LIKE THAT" and, if you go agaisn't it in any form, you're basically marked as a sexist. DoA and Xenoblade 2 fans for example are ridiculed inside that Why do some women criticize sexualized character designs? thread (That thread by the way is an echo chamber within an echo chamber, with strict rules posted in the OP to wich the habituals will refer frantically before engaging in a debate). Do you know the months prior to Xenoblade 2 launch? Every single thread related to the game was kidnapped by complaints about the designs and sincere discussion about the game was drowned. Complaining to moderation was futile, since they always argued that it was a valid point of discussion wich it really was, but there was TWO THREADS ABOUT THE DESIGNS + the already mentioned sexualized designs criticism thread. Mods only took action right before the game came out, and no one was banned or even reprimanded, they limited themselves to moderate via modposts.

I'm all in for inclusiveness and i cringe with stupidly oversexualized designs, but i also think that there's room for everyone and you're not going to change anything by calling for absolute censorship, but by getting inside the industry and making games with no sexualized designs until those become the norm and sexualization becomes an exception (I like sexualized designs by the way, when they're made tastefully. Usually i don't care about the context, it's te developer and designer's job to do that)

There's also politics. There's no nuance, it's either full leftist or nothing. Being right-winger means being automathically evil, there's loads of threads over there asking what would people do if they discovered that their family/close friends were right-wingers/alt-righters/trumpists and the majority of people agreed on cutting ties with them. There were threads with people proudly boasting about having cut ties with closed friends or family close to Thanksgiving. I can't understand that kind of mentality. Fuck, as leftist as i am my parents are full right-wingers and i could never fathom to cut ties with them. Like, holy fuck!

Men are guilty until proven otherwise.

White people are guilty until proven otherwise.

Even as a leftist, i can't understand all of this. The discussion that caused my permaban was about a fucking spanish name/diminutive that turns out it's an antisemitic insult too. I exploded when some people started saying that we Spaniards should CHANGE that name. Like, fuck off man, there's a point to how thin your skin can be.

Even it i wasn't perm'd, i decided to not going back there after that debate.

It's too extreme for me. Life isn't black and white, and it isn't about benefitting only one side of the politics. There's good right-wingers and evil leftists and viceversa. I don't think it is too hard to understand, but the higher ups over there sure don't get it at all.

Whew, reading this makes me appreciate being a manchild will absolute none political stance or remote interest in the topic ;)
To be honest, i think being apolitical it's in itself a politic stance, wich is fine too. But even if you have a political stance it's ok too no matter what if you keep youself grounded to reality . If you only see black and white and refuse any opposite opinion of any kind you end up as radicalized as resetera is.

Wich is fucking sad because when the forum opened and my account was approved i was ecstatic, because i had spent more than a decade waiting to be admitted on NeoGAF and Reset was aiming to become its successor.

Well, fuck me. At the very least im finally in NeoGAF.

I agree with you for the most part, but disagree on apoliticism being a political stance. Just as atheism is not another form of theism, apoliticism is not another form of politicism. It’s perfectly ok to be that way though.

racist and sexist viewpoints
The problem is, that a number of folks finds dubbing any slight deviation from their dogmas "sexist" and "racist".
I.e. questioning that problems african americans face is caused mainly by racism is "racist" and daring to think most girls don't play fighting/RTS games because they simply don't enjoy them and not because of harassment is "sexist".

Labeling opponents is indeed an effective way to win disputes, but it stinks.

Truth does not need lame protection of that kind.

Of course these crazy mofo wants pornographic content to stay at tumblr
I don't mind porn-content on adult sites either, not sure how crazy a mofo it makes me.
"Kids are there" is meaningless, if someone is actively looking for porn, he/she can find it no matter the age.

Not sure you fully understand what I mean

You're not supposed to put adult content on places its not meant to be period

There is no clear unarguable "tumblr was built for", heck, it was built to make money.
You basically say that platforms connecting people should not contain porn, while not bringing a single argument in support of it. (kids being able to overcome warning works against any site with porn, then we should ban them all).

You could get the same news quicker if you just browse the Gaming/Games subreddit, since that's where RE gets their news in the first place.
Useful info, thanks.

If anything, Era is better for pure game discussion than GAF was as they're also stricter about cracking down on fanboy, console warring nonsense (sales threads probably still suck, but I don't give a shit about sales as I have no loyalty to any of these corporations). It was that fanboy/console warrior crap (especially from the Nintendo diehards) that led me to leave GAF before the migration happened as it was insufferable here (left spring or early summer 2018).
I don't know if it has improved recently, but Era seemed to be pretty much infested with Nintendo diehards a couple of months back. Pretty much any new game announcement would be immediately followed by post after post of port begging from Switch owners, to the extent that "perfect for Switch" became something of a meme. The mods did seem to be clamping down on that though, so maybe the problem has died down since then.

I have mixed feelings on the activity level here. When I started visiting NeoGAF, I can agree I basically used it as a news aggregator as any popular topic moved far too fast, with extremely low quality posts making up the majority of comments to really participate in meaningfully. I spend a lot of time here during the day, and I appreciate that I'm able to keep up with a variety of topics from all 3 boards while also getting a chance to discuss all of the major news that comes out. There's definitely a balance to be had and I don't think it's necessarily true that having a million users results in a better forum experience.
A year or two from now I think a lot of us will be quite nostalgic for this relatively quiet time. For me personally, a doubling or tripling of activity would be perfect, after that things would start going downhill.

Although people have said that if you keep your head down and ignore the political stuff, then you can survive on the Era forum, it seeps into the gaming said all to often, and that will drive traffic here. Take Cyberpunk 2077 as an example:

It's going to be (already is?) on of the most hyped games of the next 2 years. So you're excited about it and want to click on a forum to read the latest news and talk about the game. What do you find if you go on Era? Post after post saying what a "piece of shit" the developer is, how they are going to boycott the game, discussion of whether any talk of the game should be banned from the forum altogether, and the implication that you too are a "piece of shit" if you just want to ignore them and actually talk about the game itself. You could even find yourself banned if you then try and push back against them. Who wants to put themselves through all that?

If you want to just talk about the game itself, then just come to GAF instead!

(I wouldn't want to ban any talk about the "controversy", but just keep it to a separate thread and don't clog up every news thread about it)

Yep. Apart from the understandably quiet rebirth a year ago, I’ve actually been really enjoying the level of activity here lately. I’ve been able to follow threads properly and take in the abundance of good posts (instead of one liner drivebys) and actually get to know a lot of members and their personalities. Really good people. It’s been amazing. I’ve had a much better time now than on oldGAF.

And I can see it picking up speed. To be honest, I am a bit trepidatious about that. Obviously a bit more activity would be great, but I dread the day that GAF becomes a shitstorm of nothing posts again. Makes being part of a community so fucking pointless.

How different did he have to be to get banned from here?
From what I noticed, he’d occasionally have something pertinent to say, but more often than not, would post very short and abrasive comments. Probably designed to antagonise. A lot of the time you’d sense some sarcasm in his posts (or at least hoped it was there), but he never seemed to explain it.

That’s my take. Maybe someone else can chime in.

I think the admin guy should hire some people to open threads about all the lastest gaming news, because that's what people really care about, and that's what will attract them.
But that's exactly what ERA did by bribing people to join their site. Why stoop to their level. Why create fake traffic and not let it come naturally.
