But that's exactly what ERA did by bribing people to join their site. Why stoop to their level. Why create fake traffic and not let it come naturally.
I think it would just be a way to "invite" people to partecipate, especially if you're open and transparent about it.
How many Era "regretionists" would have decided to come back here if the threads on gaming side were more updated and attractive? I think that's the point.

Regarding both places, the connections I made with some people matter most to me. I chat to these people in real life and some lean here and others there. At the end of the day, we get together and discuss our passion for games and the industry.
I am grateful to NeoGAF because it gave me an opportunity to meet wonderful people who helped through my suicidal phase (I think that thread still exists), a news article even paraphrased me once (how cool was that, me a nobody on the news sorta LOL).
I am grateful for ResetERA because it gave a chance to some of my friends to finally be able to interact with the "GAF" crowd. I waited 8 months for my GAF account. My friends waited years and their accounts were never even created. ERA changed that.
In the end though, I am just happy that I have people to talk to about video games.
The whole split was difficult for me TBH. Even today, I still feel bad about it. I don't have an us vs them mentality because I was a casual, chill poster at best and I never had any strong views on controversial topics. Anyway, thank you, GAF. Truly one of the best forums to ever happen to me.

My story with Resetera was very very short and started with NeoGAF (obviously).

I was a 'lurker' on this site for so long that I can't remeber tbh, close to ten years probably. At first was just to check on the new gaming news, then it expanded to actually sepending a lot of time reading the threads much more and the user opinions on both the gaming side and the offtopic side.

I never managed to have an account because, when I tried it always denied my emails and I just couldn't get bothered by it. Honestly, that happened only like twice because at some point when I would think on trying to get an account here I would just forget it cuz it just seemed such a huge community that it felt overwhelming.

Then, that big thing happened, and I saw an opportunity to finally have an account, on the "new NeoGaf" or so I thought. I mean, fresh start, with no problems on creating an account and participating, amazing right?
Well, I did, and posted there maybe 10 times at most, before seeing some "opinions" I would no doubt question and argue about, but didn't because I saw other users kinda do it and get fast "dog-piled" and screamed at by a buch of crazies. I mean, it was insane. I remember one case being about the Quiet character (MGS5).

So yeah... never went back there other than to get some laughs tbh. I think the last time I actually logged there, was to get my avatar image when I created my account here :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Safe travels mate, go enjoy that world out there 👍
Everyone needs a break every now and again. Best of luck whatever you decide.
Yeah I was just drunk and extra salty last night after a couple shit days at work and getting salty at the late game difficulty spike BS in Libra of Souls in Soul Calibur 6. :D

So I don't need to quit the internet. I just need to scale it back. I do still mostly enjoy game OTs and community threads, some announcement/hype threads and some off topic stuff like random funnly life threads and some movie/tv show threads (though not many these days, more on that below). I just need to stick to those thread and start making heavy use of ignore user (and ignore threads on the other site, hope @EviLore enables that here eventually) to avoid the shit that triggers me and raises the salt levels.

So I'll amend my early request down to just please kick me in the virtual taint if you see me posting outside of those kind of threads. :D

. People seem to actually like to hate hobbies more than like to like or love hobbies they participate in.
Very much this. Best example is probably TV shows like the Walking Dead where people keep watching year and year and bitching about it over and over. So fucking stupid. I keep watching as I've enjoyed every season. Life is too short to "hate watch" things.

I think it's just a problem with the internet crowd. Most people are normal and just enjoy their hobbies and maybe talk with friends or co-workers about them occasionally. There's probably something wrong with most of us who spend a lot of time talking about them online with randoms. Thus you get a large chunk of the most frequent and intense posters being people with severe mental illness who are just negative, jaded, depressed, angry types that hate everything and want to make everyone else miserable. So again, I probably just need to start making much heavier use of the ignore user feature--especially on Era as there are so many losers over there.

I particpate in both forums. I am not as vocal in either as I was at one point and I find the evolution of what has happened here to be somewhat bittersweet. I appreciate the restructure and redesign and I find the segmentation of politcs to a third section of the site to actually be a massive improvement. I like the idea and direction the site moderation has laid out as a goal and the slower pace of thread movement now. I think my love of gaming and sharing that love and interest of the hobby for me has transitioned more to a smaller group of people that I have met over the years that happen to have all migrated to a dark corner of discord. With all of that said I do believe there will be a general uptick in usage and posting when more people realize GAF is still around for the long run and that moderation as well as discussion has become less pick a side and more open in general.
I've been disappointed with the change since politics was added. I'm glad those threads are in their own area so I don't have to see them. There just wasn't the uptick in activity in off topic that I'd hoped. Especially in fun threads like movies, shows, sports etc. They're working on something new with communities, so hopefully that will help.

To be honest resetera is something that *must* be talked about.

Leaving aside the Resetera hate you can see in NeoGAF, Resetera in itself have some issues, from its mod team to the mold you have to adjust yourself in order to *not* get banned.

And don't get me started on the moral superiority position they adopt once you disagree with almost anyone over there. It makes really hard to debate anything (If you manage to not get warned/banned)

And don't you dare to use equivalences to try explaining your point!

And... and... holy fuck, i could keep writing for at least half an hour.

It makes me feel really sad because i'm leftist at heart, but there's still some points of view i find quite extreme over there and i tried to debate. It didn't go well. At all.
It's just a stupid, irrelevant online forum like this one. It's certainly nothing important that *must* be talked about. Nor is any forum. Forums, as much as I love them, are a relic of the path with no sway on anything anymore. Twitter and Facebook and Youtube are where stuff goes viral and has an actual impact on corporate decisions and what not.

If people have fun discussing era, then have at it of course. But some give that site importance it doesn't have. Watch and discuss it for the lolz. But it isn't something that *must* be talked about no more than r/the_donald or other shitty echo chamber communties need to be talked about. Their irrelevant little clusters of losers online. Nothing more.

I don't know if it has improved recently, but Era seemed to be pretty much infested with Nintendo diehards a couple of months back. Pretty much any new game announcement would be immediately followed by post after post of port begging from Switch owners, to the extent that "perfect for Switch" became something of a meme. The mods did seem to be clamping down on that though, so maybe the problem has died down since then.
Of course as the Nintendo fanboys from here ended up over there. The modding of console warring nonsense is just better over there than it was here before IMO. Again, I left here as it was being so poorly moderated, reports going unactioned etc. Reports over there for console warring, port begging etc. usually get that shit shut down. I also identified the raging Nintendo fanboys early on and put them on ignore which helps.

Although people have said that if you keep your head down and ignore the political stuff, then you can survive on the Era forum, it seeps into the gaming said all to often, and that will drive traffic here. Take Cyberpunk 2077 as an example:

It's going to be (already is?) on of the most hyped games of the next 2 years. So you're excited about it and want to click on a forum to read the latest news and talk about the game. What do you find if you go on Era? Post after post saying what a "piece of shit" the developer is, how they are going to boycott the game, discussion of whether any talk of the game should be banned from the forum altogether, and the implication that you too are a "piece of shit" if you just want to ignore them and actually talk about the game itself. You could even find yourself banned if you then try and push back against them. Who wants to put themselves through all that?

If you want to just talk about the game itself, then just come to GAF instead!

(I wouldn't want to ban any talk about the "controversy", but just keep it to a separate thread and don't clog up every news thread about it)
That does happen sometimes, but usually once we get to review threads, game OTs, spoiler threads etc. the mods are pretty good about cutting that shit out of those threads (like the Rockstar Crunch bitching--that got taken care of pretty quickly in the first OT after reporting some posts). News threads I can't say as much as I don't really read posts in those. I generally just open them and go to the link as I don't really care about people's opinions on news.

I've been here for only a few days, sooooooo... what's the deal with Skynet?
He was a troll, to put it simply. 95% or more of his posts were just trolling. Some very abrasively, some trying to be funny (and failing). He also had several temp bans and warnings, so it wasn't a quick banning decision or anything. He'd just came off a week or two ban for an inappropriate avatar image (don't know what it was, just saw it as the reason in the ban list).

The people complaining about lack of new news could, you know, make threads...

I’ve been flat out crazy busy these last 6 months and yet, I still try to contribute. It’s a collective effort.
To me I don't care about the lack of news, it's just the lack of discussion of games outside the biggest AAA ones. I spent some time and made an OT here for Dead Cells. It sank like a stone after a week or so (and only lasted that long from me bumping it from the depths with pretty pointless posts to get it back visible for a bit). Last I checked there isn't even an OT for Soul Calibur 6 (just some discussion in a news thread, or maybe it was the review thread). This community is just too small for any meaningful level of activity about anything other than big western AAA games that appeal to the more "dudebro" vibe this community has (hate that term, and don't mean it negatively, just can't think of a better word for it). I play a lot of those games, they just aren't much fun to discuss as there mostly easy, linear, narrative-driven games or purely online games.

Maybe that will change over time, but I kind of doubt it. The forum just has a very western, male gamer vibe to it so there's little reason for people who like more niche games to choose this place as home over Era or various sub-Reddits. The fact that the politics section and social/political gaming topics tend to get the most action here is also no doubt off putting to many who don't want deal with that stuff when coming to a hobby site. And of course allowing views from "both sides" will be off putting to a lot of people as well as many just don't want that these days. That's part of the rise of Reddit imo as people can just find subs for their niches and viewpoints and nothing else. So I don't see any big uptick in membership. It will mostly just be people coming back after they get banned from and/or sick of Era, and that's not going to change the vibe of the community as it's just adding more of the same.

Just like NeoGAF was in the past, nowadays resetera is the reference forum for videogames, is where everyone knows thay are going to get their news. It hasn't been made irrelevant by social netwroks, if it were, no company or important website would bother on being part on it and having community in there.

The staff knows it, and the community too, that's why they use it to push an agenda, just like it was done in the past here in NeoGAF.

That's why i think it *must* be discussed.

Hardly any industry people post there. It’s not like GAF at its heyday when a bunch were active members. Twitter and Reddit (game-specific subs) have surpassed forums for how most publishers and devs reach out to fans and get info out.

It has some sway for small, niche games that appeal only to hardcore types, but that’s about it. And even for most of those the subreddits are where most of the action is. When media stories pick up on fan reaction it’s almost always mentioning the subreddit these days. Only time I’ve heard Era mentioned in media lately was some podcasts mentioning rumors that broke there. Most people think outrage culture is a joke and just laugh at it and give it as much creed as they do the alt right losers. Irrelevant extremists.

But for the AAA stuff they aren’t going to care about forums with 40,000 members or whatever for games they’re wanting to sell millions or tens of millions of. Twitter and other outlets that reach millions are where they focus their efforts. See CDPR not really giving much of a shit about their uproar over those tweets and just giving lukewarm semi-apologies and sending out more tweets that raised ire after the first and not announcing a firing the person behind them and so on. Or games like Soul Calibur 6 still having super sexualized outfits, same with SF5 and things like the holiday female outfits being skimpy and the male ones not sexualized at all. Nerds on forums have little impact as money talks and bullshit walks and the things they hate sell well.

is bishop on era?
If you refer to BishopTL (As there is also a Bishop87): He is, and he does not post much from what i know.

Even Microsoft's adaptive controllers for the mentality disabled mod team!
I know you are banned and all, but when referring to the staff on ERA or even The Names, that's just cruel. There is criticism, there is complaint, and then there are you. Its just too much mate.

BishopTL, presumably. Evilore's Forgotten Son. The SweetNicole of OldGAF. The Terror That Flapped In The Night. Book writer. Does something in the industry. The guy who had that Samuel Jackson avatar.

Why? Behind the thinly veiled sarcastic posts there were a ton that were more like subtle attempts to spam and i figured it was a subtle response to his previous ban.

How different did he have to be to get banned from here?
Try to be clever. And then watch what happens.

Sometimes in a good way, sometimes not, but overall I liked him 😔
He finally became self-aware. By force, that is.

So I'll be right there looking at you on the ground gotcha.

I kid : D
With that ridiculous... thing on your head? Haha please. I am a floating head, i tower above you with ease, that's how leet i am.

Wuss.

;)
I still lurk here but do most of my posting over there (which isn't a lot).
HERESY!!!

The majority who would come to post probably got banned years ago. Their's not really any coming back from that. Site's changed for the better, but EvilLore and others are to blame for letting it get out of hand in the first place.

A lot of holier than thou shit happens here as well, and on all sites. The huge difference is here people on all sides are allowed to do it. :D

Otherwise, that's just the internet. It's full of antisocial, egoistic assholes who think their shit doesn't stink, who have super strong opinions on everything and think every differing opinion has to be objectively wrong. Whether be opinions on whether a game or movie or whatever is good or now or political stances.

Hi Park
No reason to mis-characterize me. I didn't fabricate or cherry pick anything. I took a strong stance with an unpopular opinion and tried to argue for it with some easily accessed statistical data. You were free to disagree, which you did. We had something of a back and forth and then it was over. What do you expect moderation should have done in that exchange? I probably could've been a little nicer with some of my word choices, but arguments like those are valuable and serve a purpose and moderation's only role should be to make sure the discussion doesn't derail too hard and avoids personal attacks.

The very fact that we could have the debate we did is why I really appreciate NeoGAF these days. I've made a vow to not use Reddit at work, so this place is basically the only discussion based website I use during the day. Intelligent discussion is the cornerstone of western society. Bad ideas will be defeated on the basis of their lack of merit. You don't need to forcibly squelch them, all that accomplishes is retarding people's ability to confront beliefs that they disagree with. It's bad for us as individuals and as a society.

ResetERA is literally a cancer on society. I feel the same way about r/The_Donald. Any community based on discussion that censors those they disagree with is a useless existence. These places are training individuals to think and live in ways that can not possibly be functional in the real world and would quite literally cause the collapse of western civilization were they main stream. Open dialogue is how you defeat bad ideas. NeuGAF has, so far, proven to be a stalwart champion of this concept. Moderation does not take sides, and only steps in when discussion is derailing. I am happy to spend my time here, despite the fact that I will disagree with many posters on many issues. I know that if I post something most disagree with, there will not be pages of driveby shitposts in response to me having the gall to deviate from the hivemind, and in fact I can probably expect an intelligent rebuttal or two for me to engage with.

Great Job @EviLore and really all of the moderation/admin staff you've assembled. Also great job to those that have stuck around and been apart of shaping this community to be what it has become. I spend a lot of time here, most days just lurking, but it has become a place I'm happy to be a part of.
As a matter of record, you 100% cherry picked and fabricated.

You linked to a climate change Q&A page by rewriting the link title to say “Did you know that the Earth’s surface temperature has remained flat over the last decade?”

https://www.climate.gov/news-features/climate-qa/why-did-earth’s-surface-temperature-stop-rising-past-decade

You tried to reappropriate and twist everything to try and further your farcical viewpoint that climate change has no effect on the economy or human lives. You egregiously ignored all the key facts from your own link and by doing so, you perfectly demonstrated the definition of cherry picking and disingenuousness.

But good job with your long winded and starkly obvious brown nosing for @EviLore, That seems to carry far more weight than any kind of honest discussion.

Is it possible to simultaneously believe that climate change is a real phenomenon but that it has also been hijacked and exaggerated for political purposes? That’s where I think @bigedole is coming from and I would say it’s my stance too.

Was that post worth coming back a 6.5 year!!! absence from GAF and then draping it in passive aggressiveness to not only the user you are citing, but also on a key staff member here?

That seems wholly excessive.

Get back to being used here, make yourself comfortable. NewGAF is welcoming with open dabs. :)

I stand by what I posted, the meaning of which was apparently lost on you. I didn't change a headline, I just made my sentence into a hyperlink to what it was referencing. If you want to continue this argument you're welcome to reply to the PM I sent you about it yesterday.

And yet to this day those best known users have little interest in checking us out again or seeing a bit deeper in the system.
I think that is too glib. A lot of the best known users got unceremoniously thrown out from here after years of quality posting with nobody (moderators and EviLore) bothering to stand up for them . They were seen as disposable. But a forum is the community.

It will take time and effort to get people to come back.

Ignoring the ones that were all up in controversy here before and there now, it's largely down to traffic/exposure. What we miss most are the good content creators that made great OPs and the people that ran active community threads for online games and what not.

People that put in that effort are going to go to sites with a ton of activity and not slower paced ones. It's not worth the effort to make a fancy OT to have it sink off the front pages in a week or less (RIP my Dead Cells OT here, not that it was great or on par with what's expected for OTs) or try to run a community that will have a handful of members regularly participating.

I don't know that traffic will ever get high enough to get those type of posts back. Honestly I think they should give up, get rid of the volunteer to make OTs thread and just make sure there's an OT for most games that come out even if the first post is super barebones with just some basic info and links about the game. Communities will just be down to whether whatever big format change they're working on here drives up activity and brings people back/new people in.

EDIT: WOOPS... missed that it already had its own thread. https://www.neogaf.com/threads/david-jaffe-creator-of-god-of-war-annoyed-by-forum.1468982/

David Jaffe, creative director behind the first few God of War and Twisted Metal games, reacts to ResetERA's barrage of hatred for stating that while he doesn't agree with Milo Yiannopoulos's views, the man should still have the ability to speak his mind:

And the ensuing Era thread:

https://www.resetera.com/threads/da...f-war-has-a-bone-to-pick-with-resetera.85351/

Spoiler Alert:
Jaffe gives a great summary and explanation of why a lot of people on NeoGAF are critical of (and annoyed by) ResetEra's moderation and posters, and the cultural trends that they represent.

His ending words in the video - "ya fuckin morons" - are all they really they deserve.
