Safe travels mate, go enjoy that world out there
Everyone needs a break every now and again. Best of luck whatever you decide.
Yeah I was just drunk and extra salty last night after a couple shit days at work and getting salty at the late game difficulty spike BS in Libra of Souls in Soul Calibur 6.
So I don't need to quit the internet. I just need to scale it back. I do still mostly enjoy game OTs and community threads, some announcement/hype threads and some off topic stuff like random funnly life threads and some movie/tv show threads (though not many these days, more on that below). I just need to stick to those thread and start making heavy use of ignore user (and ignore threads on the other site, hope
EviLore
enables that here eventually) to avoid the shit that triggers me and raises the salt levels.
So I'll amend my early request down to just please kick me in the virtual taint if you see me posting outside of those kind of threads.
. People seem to actually like to hate hobbies more than like to like or love hobbies they participate in.
Very much this. Best example is probably TV shows like the Walking Dead where people keep watching year and year and bitching about it over and over. So fucking stupid. I keep watching as I've enjoyed every season. Life is too short to "hate watch" things.
I think it's just a problem with the internet crowd. Most people are normal and just enjoy their hobbies and maybe talk with friends or co-workers about them occasionally. There's probably something wrong with most of us who spend a lot of time talking about them online with randoms. Thus you get a large chunk of the most frequent and intense posters being people with severe mental illness who are just negative, jaded, depressed, angry types that hate everything and want to make everyone else miserable. So again, I probably just need to start making much heavier use of the ignore user feature--especially on Era as there are so many losers over there.
I particpate in both forums. I am not as vocal in either as I was at one point and I find the evolution of what has happened here to be somewhat bittersweet. I appreciate the restructure and redesign and I find the segmentation of politcs to a third section of the site to actually be a massive improvement. I like the idea and direction the site moderation has laid out as a goal and the slower pace of thread movement now. I think my love of gaming and sharing that love and interest of the hobby for me has transitioned more to a smaller group of people that I have met over the years that happen to have all migrated to a dark corner of discord. With all of that said I do believe there will be a general uptick in usage and posting when more people realize GAF is still around for the long run and that moderation as well as discussion has become less pick a side and more open in general.
I've been disappointed with the change since politics was added. I'm glad those threads are in their own area so I don't have to see them. There just wasn't the uptick in activity in off topic that I'd hoped. Especially in fun threads like movies, shows, sports etc. They're working on something new with communities, so hopefully that will help.
To be honest resetera is something that *must* be talked about.
Leaving aside the Resetera hate you can see in NeoGAF, Resetera in itself have some issues, from its mod team to the mold you have to adjust yourself in order to *not* get banned.
And don't get me started on the moral superiority position they adopt once you disagree with almost anyone over there. It makes really hard to debate anything (If you manage to not get warned/banned)
And don't you dare to use equivalences to try explaining your point!
And... and... holy fuck, i could keep writing for at least half an hour.
It makes me feel really sad because i'm leftist at heart, but there's still some points of view i find quite extreme over there and i tried to debate. It didn't go well. At all.
It's just a stupid, irrelevant online forum like this one. It's certainly nothing important that *must* be talked about. Nor is any forum. Forums, as much as I love them, are a relic of the path with no sway on anything anymore. Twitter and Facebook and Youtube are where stuff goes viral and has an actual impact on corporate decisions and what not.
If people have fun discussing era, then have at it of course. But some give that site importance it doesn't have. Watch and discuss it for the lolz. But it isn't something that *must* be talked about no more than r/the_donald or other shitty echo chamber communties need to be talked about. Their irrelevant little clusters of losers online. Nothing more.
I don't know if it has improved recently, but Era seemed to be pretty much infested with Nintendo diehards a couple of months back. Pretty much any new game announcement would be immediately followed by post after post of port begging from Switch owners, to the extent that "perfect for Switch" became something of a meme. The mods did seem to be clamping down on that though, so maybe the problem has died down since then.
Of course as the Nintendo fanboys from here ended up over there. The modding of console warring nonsense is just better over there than it was here before IMO. Again, I left here as it was being so poorly moderated, reports going unactioned etc. Reports over there for console warring, port begging etc. usually get that shit shut down. I also identified the raging Nintendo fanboys early on and put them on ignore which helps.
Although people have said that if you keep your head down and ignore the political stuff, then you can survive on the Era forum, it seeps into the gaming said all to often, and that will drive traffic here. Take Cyberpunk 2077 as an example:
It's going to be (already is?) on of the most hyped games of the next 2 years. So you're excited about it and want to click on a forum to read the latest news and talk about the game. What do you find if you go on Era? Post after post saying what a "piece of shit" the developer is, how they are going to boycott the game, discussion of whether any talk of the game should be banned from the forum altogether, and the implication that you too are a "piece of shit" if you just want to ignore them and actually talk about the game itself. You could even find yourself banned if you then try and push back against them. Who wants to put themselves through all that?
If you want to just talk about the game itself, then just come to GAF instead!
(I wouldn't want to ban any talk about the "controversy", but just keep it to a separate thread and don't clog up every news thread about it)
That does happen sometimes, but usually once we get to review threads, game OTs, spoiler threads etc. the mods are pretty good about cutting that shit out of those threads (like the Rockstar Crunch bitching--that got taken care of pretty quickly in the first OT after reporting some posts). News threads I can't say as much as I don't really read posts in those. I generally just open them and go to the link as I don't really care about people's opinions on news.
I've been here for only a few days, sooooooo... what's the deal with Skynet?
He was a troll, to put it simply. 95% or more of his posts were just trolling. Some very abrasively, some trying to be funny (and failing). He also had several temp bans and warnings, so it wasn't a quick banning decision or anything. He'd just came off a week or two ban for an inappropriate avatar image (don't know what it was, just saw it as the reason in the ban list).
The people complaining about lack of new news could, you know, make threads...
I’ve been flat out crazy busy these last 6 months and yet, I still try to contribute. It’s a collective effort.
To me I don't care about the lack of news, it's just the lack of discussion of games outside the biggest AAA ones. I spent some time and made an OT here for Dead Cells. It sank like a stone after a week or so (and only lasted that long from me bumping it from the depths with pretty pointless posts to get it back visible for a bit). Last I checked there isn't even an OT for Soul Calibur 6 (just some discussion in a news thread, or maybe it was the review thread). This community is just too small for any meaningful level of activity about anything other than big western AAA games that appeal to the more "dudebro" vibe this community has (hate that term, and don't mean it negatively, just can't think of a better word for it). I play a lot of those games, they just aren't much fun to discuss as there mostly easy, linear, narrative-driven games or purely online games.
Maybe that will change over time, but I kind of doubt it. The forum just has a very western, male gamer vibe to it so there's little reason for people who like more niche games to choose this place as home over Era or various sub-Reddits. The fact that the politics section and social/political gaming topics tend to get the most action here is also no doubt off putting to many who don't want deal with that stuff when coming to a hobby site. And of course allowing views from "both sides" will be off putting to a lot of people as well as many just don't want that these days. That's part of the rise of Reddit imo as people can just find subs for their niches and viewpoints and nothing else. So I don't see any big uptick in membership. It will mostly just be people coming back after they get banned from and/or sick of Era, and that's not going to change the vibe of the community as it's just adding more of the same.
