That in itself is sad. That political topics get the most action on a fucking video game site. Not that the other place is any better.
Online gaming discussion is pretty much dead. I’ve been a heavy poster on game forums for over 20 years. I think this month will be the end for me and I’m setting getting the fuck off the internet as my sole resolution for next year. It’s just too much drama and long sense stopped being escapist fun.
Get out of my head!
At around mid summer of 2017 I noticed that I was discussing games less and just arguing about the idea of discussing games. What drew me to places like GAF and other much smaller forums dedicated to games was dying or already dead when it came to game discussion. NeoGAF happened to contain many interests outside of gaming for me and so I found myself staying longer than I would if it was just game related.
Fast forward to now and I think I somehow missed the boat on what game discussion has become. I don't know when, what, where, why or how I came to this conclusion but I really am detached from the general idea of game discussions and how it happens now. I am a rather sarcasticly dry asshole in general but things at this point have hit the level of drama I can only associate with my early teen years. People seem to actually like to hate hobbies more than like to like or love hobbies they participate it. I never really left GAF after the massive exodus happened I just did not particpate in it because honestly I did not know where to start or how to approach discussing the hobby in a way that did not leave me burned out.
I particpate in both forums. I am not as vocal in either as I was at one point and I find the evolution of what has happened here to be somewhat bittersweet. I appreciate the restructure and redesign and I find the segmentation of politcs to a third section of the site to actually be a massive improvement. I like the idea and direction the site moderation has laid out as a goal and the slower pace of thread movement now. I think my love of gaming and sharing that love and interest of the hobby for me has transitioned more to a smaller group of people that I have met over the years that happen to have all migrated to a dark corner of discord. With all of that said I do believe there will be a general uptick in usage and posting when more people realize GAF is still around for the long run and that moderation as well as discussion has become less pick a side and more open in general.
