okay, price drop confirmed in person. just got back from the apple store and got a 4gb iphone. $299 was my original "i'm there" price, and it has finally happened. can't wait to activate this baby after work. :D

as someone said before, it's only $20 to upgrade to the unlimited iphone data plan if you're an existing AT&T customer. that was pretty much the icing on the cake for me.

The 4GB are actually $299? They're not discontinued?

The ipod touch was DOA when Apple announced the iphone price drop. Seriously, they need to give us a better reason to buy one. Eiother price it lower or give 32gb.
The best reason to buy Ipod touch is if you like the iPhone screen functionality...

...and you don't live in the US! :-D

Yeah, it's actually kinda bit sad reason, but I'm in that exact position.

again iPhone owners how do you feel, is anyone more tempted now to hack their phone or is $99 not a big deal for you?
People in this thread have already pointed out that 3rd party software can be used to add free custom ringtones. As stupid/frustrating as it is to see Apple kowtowing to the demands of music companies, nobody cares.

For starters its double the storage of the same priced iPhone and smaller. Also, my current provider is CDMA--so even an unlocked iPhone would be gimped to me.

But I dare not argue with the official GAF Britney Spears expert.

Remaining quantities are $299. When they are gone they are gone though.

$349 for a refurbished 8gb iPhone (plus 1 yr warranty) seems like a much better deal though.

I live in canada and im not getting it :p I want an unlocked iphone damnit.

Umm? you must be mistaking me for someone else.

As for ringtones, I don't think anyone is HAPPY with the announcement, but they understand it.

Apple has to play nice with music labels. Third-party app makers don't. Simple as that.

I think it is not a big deal. That is how much ringtones cost for other carriers anyway. So Apple/AT&T are now just following the trend. Jobs did phrase it in the worst way possible though. Don't even bring up the double-dipping aspect, just say that the ringtones are now available.

Fuck you, I spent $600 on a PS3 so I have the right to whine about it all I wish. In fact it's about the only real pleasure the damn thing gives me.
Buying something doesnt give you the right to bitch about it constantly, you dont like it fucking sell it. You, a supposed gaming podcaster and whatever else you do with games, should know full well what the PS3 has available to it.
Gaming board is that way -> go bitch about it there.

zomg... i'm torn between the new classic 160gb (all that storage!!!!) iPod and the new iPod Touch (AWESOME looking + features- iTunes, Internet browsing via WiFi!!!!). :crycry

They couldn't just say "Ringtones are now 99 cents!" Then everyone would be confused. I think they had to make it clear that buying the song would not buy you the ringtone....but stating this explicitly sounds pretty bad ("99 cents PLUS the cost of the song").

is this not part of the problem that noone cares. I dont find the argument "Because other people are doing it" justifys anything.

Its Bullshit double dipping, you own the content, you own the phone that is capable of playing them so why cant you. Its Double Dipping and its shaddy stuff.

looking at some of the classic photos, it seems to have that awful glittery speckled silver finish (kind of like the new psp). man. what was so hard about just giving us pure white?

Fuck you apple.. this is exactly what I expected and exactly what I didn't want.
On the one hand I really want the iPod touch for the interface (Black background for the cover flow is also very nice. Can I change the color in the classic or will it always be ugly white?) and the looks. On the other, though, is 160 GBytes of space (Which I need, badly) AND 40 hours of music playback. It looks very outdated no matter what they'll do compared to the touch and a big part of the iPod is how it looks.

What should I buy? Knowing myself I'll probably pass on this gen :(

I really need podcasts to pull down through Wifi. I don't want to have to sync to get new podcasts. This should be trivial to implement.

QFT, would make things so much easier

I'm REALLY tempted to get an iPhone now, but I'll hold out for 3G. Oh heck, bonus is next week, maybe I will.

I'm definitely getting a 160 gigger, and I'll get something using flash memory for running and the gym. Not sure which, though. The new Nanos are hot, but can I resist the conversation piece value of the touch?

cmon white man... just DO IT.

How is it double dipping? We are talking about 2 different products. Songs and Ringtones. They are two different things. That is the way the music game is played. Apple is not going to change those rules. People wanted ringtones on their phone, now they have them. They are going to pay the same amount just like someone on Sprint, T-Mobile or whatever. If I buy a song on my Sprint phone, I still have to pay for a ringtone of the same song because they are different products. So you are saying songs, videos, and ringtones should all come for the combined price of .99?

Wake up and come back to reality.

Is the screen bigger or the same on the ipod touch? Apple's site says the touch is widescreen, but I know the iphone didn't have a 16:9 screen. A true 16:9 screen would be nice.

koam said:

they're being phased out as we speak. after this run of $299 4gb iphones, the only option will be the $399 8gb.

iPod Touch: Me Want.

16 GB is a little bit on the small side but my music collection is only 11.5 gigs (which I don't even listen to half of). I understand the decision to go with flash and the restrictions on size that imposes if you want to stick to the 300/400 dollar price points. I wanted the iPhone so badly but couldn't switch to AT&T. Apple designs absolutely beautiful interfaces.

depends on how locked down the phone is. i've got a Q running windows mobile 5 and any mp3 i want can be a ringtone. my last phone was a crappy LG with 5mb of internal storage, and i still downsampled mp3's and used bitpim to get them onto the phone as ringtones

i've never paid for a ringtone in my life, and i'm not about to start.

They used to give you a case?

Ugh, I'm gonna have to wait for people to get theirs before I decide since I need to see these colors in a normal light.

You don't even need to hack your phone to use iToner, but it's mac-only.

Not a big deal at all to me. $2 is a reasonable price to own the song and also make the ringtone of my favorite section. Things could've been A LOT worse there pricing-wise with these greedy record companies, I'm happy it turned out how it did. There's always iToner too - http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/itoner/

My only big dissapointment is the iPhone price drop. I'm sure it'll be huge for their marketshare and a lot more people are going to buy one now, but as an early adopter that stings. I read that and my heart sunk.

Yea, my old RZR could play mp3s, my audiovox plays mp3's as ringtones.
Hell when i get a text message my phone plays an mp3 of homer saying 'DOH or an email or voice mail it says "shut up brain or ill stab you with a q-tip." X-files theme as the default ringtone, layla for my dad and various other songs for other people i know.

I was really close to buying an iPod Touch but realized... do I really need to check my email and the web all day long? Not really. I'll stick with my current player cause all I use it for is music anyways.

Ok your point that a ringtone & a song is two different products is technically correct, the ringtone is a 30second snapshot of the orignal song.

However the ringtone is a duplication of the original song that you already own, why should you not be able to have access to the song you own to set as a ringtone.

As an alternative, most UK phones support mp3 ringtone support, so I can buy a non-drm'd song and own it once and have it for both purposes.

You have an iPhone its a place for all your songs and its ringtone feature is crippled to make it fit into another download market, they have a system for downloading music on ipods, there is no reason why you should not be able to have it as a ringtone.

I cant see it any other way as being a bullshit grab.

They gave you one made from dead man's bandages with the 5g after the nano class action against screen scratches. It was cheap but it did the job.

There will be many complaints against them for not including it with the touch. That's really retarded with such a huge device.

I never paid for one either as my Mogul runs WM6 and I can use any mp3 as well. But I was referring to the iPhone and the 'proper' way companies want you to use ringtones. People buy ringtones like they are water though. It is amazing how big the business is now.

There, changed my avatar back to mcbain, different shot this time. :p

You still can. You just can't use the official iTunes interfaces. As has been stated multiple times, there are other third party products that do this, that are either cheap, or free, and are simple to use.

Ditto. iPhone does all of this once you have the mp3 files on the phone. Super easy.

In iToner's case it's retardedly simple.

You might not like it, but that is the way it is. Ringtones make artists more money than album sales now. So don't think that carriers and labels aren't making a killing too. I agree with what you are saying, but because of the revenue stream ringtones have started, they will be seperate products.
