Well, the answer is to never early-adopt. Ever.

The only assholes here are early adopters that, at the time, were content enough to drop $600 on a phone and live with it, but are now just angry out of selfish spite.

No spite here. I just want the money.

Do I think the iPhone (4G that I bought) was worth $500? I did, and still do. It does not deter me from feeling that it was a terrible move by Apple to drop it so soon. It simply alienates these early adopters (who seem to have a bad rep on this board for some reason) who usually are Apple's best customers.

We'll see how angry I am tomorrow when faced with buying one for my wife.

"Beware of falling prices and/or shoddy hardware*" should be the daily mantra of the early adopter. If you don't want to run the risk of either, don't wait in line on launch day. No one was cheated here. Dropping a price isn't illegal, and there's no required amount of time Apple has to wait in order to do it. The iPhone is up against phones less than half its price, and in order to actually sell it to more than just Apple fans with more money than they know what to do with, the price has to come down ASAP.

(*I'm not saying the iPhone has shoddy hardware.)

iPod classic looks extremely chunky. Does anybody know how the size compares to the 5th gen iPods? [/to lazy to research]

I know everybody is saying an HDD touch iPod would be ridiculous, but that's all I really wanted today :/

It's just so, well, extreme. Again, 33% drop in 2 months? That's unprecedented in most cases, and definitely by Apple. It appears that despite their comment that it was planned it seems they really needed to ignite sales.

What about the dimensions? Maybe they just have a smaller hand in the demo or something...

fatPod kinda shocked me. So fugly. I can't remember Apple ever releasing a product that ugly. It's funny that the mockup I posted waay earlier looks much better.

Also: White BG in coverflow? Ugh.

That's great. I've wanted an iPhone ever since the day I saw one at MacWorld. But, I knew it would drop in price (who knew it would be this soon?), I knew it would support EDGE, which sucks, and I knew it would be riddled with bugs, which I didn't want to deal with. I also knew people would buy the iPhone regardless, because people are stupid like that. Now, the cool people like me get to save $200 and still get every single feature you guys got only two and a half months ago.

It should be precedented. You really have no argument here other than the usual early adopter whining that used to just be contained in sad gaming discussion threads.

The iPhone's iPod UI seriously blows the doors off the older iPods. Amazing. I'm having a blast with my iPhone so far.

My suggestion to the early adopters, buy Apple stock. It's down $7.50 and it will definitely rebound. You'll make back your $200 and then some.

The Apple gold rush is over, anyone buying into it now isn't going to make nearly as much as those smart enough to get it when it was below $100. If it goes much higher it'll hit tech bubble-era levels of stupid and just wind up burning people in the end.

yes nick, you're awesome i'm awesome. everyone who didn't buy an iPhone 'till today is awesome. but we have to admit Apple fucked early adopters really hard. just TWO months after launch?? wow. i don't even think this is about early adopters, this is about a company fisting it's audience.

those who are happy with their $600 phone (most of the casual/dumb consumer who don't even know the damned thing dropped $200 today), so be it. those who aren't it's your right, but meh, it's nothing personal it's just business.

the way i see it, someone had to stop the bullet, and i knew it wasn't going to be me.

You just mad because the wife is getting a 200 dollar cheaper iPhone which she will spend the rest of the year mocking you for getting early. ;)

But can they make their $200 back? That seems to be the big complaint.

In other news: My brother and one of his coworkers bought iPhones today as well. It's an anecdotal stampede!

Not only that, but we're $200 richer if we decide to buy an iPhone. *ZING*

But you see, I could have made the exact same choice as every other iPhone buyer. I could have been reamed by Apple. Now I (and the rest of the non-iPhone owners) get to gloat at how stupid you all were for purchasing a $600 phone, which is now $400. I'm sorry, but I have that right.

can you imagine? i could go and buy an iPhone with $600 and the lady in the counter would tell me "sir, that's too much money, it's only $400"

BA-DAM PISSHHH!

yeah, but not every person in the world knows Apple updates/drops price on hardware every year. hell, no one even thought they would drop $200 today. i think it's the first time i've seen that.

btw, i don't have an iPhone, Nick. i don't care about high-end cellphones :p

did you buy the put, or sell it?

id murder for a call @ 106

I only know what my broker tells me, and that is what he said when I asked him earlier about the big drop. He said not to worry as they're at 106 and it wont get close to that.

So it's the good one, whatever it is.

Normally I'd agree, but it also doubles as a REALLY portable, albeit basic, Internet tablet. Safari and Youtube plus 16GB of music?

I swore up and down that I'd need more space, but even I'm sort of wavering. :(

iPhone-less iPhone 4 life, yo.

also, what programs do you use to convert videos for the iPhone? dont tell me you can only do iTunes stuff.

But so does the PSP!

I'm so tempted, but I cannot afford $399 for 16GB. $249-299 (got a friend that works at an Apple store), so I can get it around $250ish if it ever drops to $299 MSRP.

Portable internet, not the shitty kind found on phones currently, is what I was considering the iPhone for, other than my basic phone service.

It stinks to have to have the phone and an iPod, but no monthly data service fee and 16GB should ease my mind.

Not having them ship for 4 more weeks sucks though.

It's my opinion. Obviously you disagree, but at least I won't be whining about it any more.

This can not be underestimated. I saw Google's home page on a Blackberry 8300, and it looked crappy. Think of how simple that site is. The iPhone (and now the touch) make it impossible to use other devices for web after you have experienced.

Try Handbrake and/or iSquint

It's killing me, I keep jumping back and forth. 80 Gig classic, or 16 gig touch.

I say get the Touch.

I really hope that the iPhone/iTouch internet capabilities will be copied by EVERYONE!

iPhone must be in trouble. That's an enormous drop.

And I think I want a Touch.

Several things in play here. As I said before, Apple is in for a humbling experience when it comes to the phone market - there is competent competition here and a lot of ecosystems to navigate. The iPhone is selling well below its September target so they need to get that baby pumped up in numbers or they will have a huge stock backlash. There is also another model on the near horizon in the 3G feature set. Apple needs to launch this when they start their European invasion. Finally, I'm glad to see that they at last launched the touch :)

The good thing is that Apple has achieved the appropriate product line and price points going into the Christmas season. They should do well, and the zune will continue be a steaming pile of shit.

So are there any homebrew or official apps that have been developed for the iPhone that will work on the iPod touch?

As I understand it, both devices are running the same core OS and are app binary compatible. I won't bet my life on it, but I'm pretty certain that the homebrew will port over without even a recompile.
