Is the Official iPod FM Tuner the product to buy? (instead of any similar 3rd party accessory?). I looked Online and there seems to be mixed reviews on the quality of the item. I do like that its both an FM Tuner and a separate control device (since I've been meaning to buy one).

I have one, and I love it.

It is as advertised. Remote, radio tuner, shorter headphones (great for a laptop). I also had the bonus of getting the newer style headphones (the old ones don't fit me as well). I'm not an audiophile, as such, so don't care as much about getting the latest sennheisers or shure's or whatever.

The remote is a great feature - allows your iPod to be in your bag, or pocket, and you can easily pause or adjust volume. I think it's great, but you have to decide whether the price is right.

Im beginning to cave in to the touch. It will compliment my 2G shuffle nicely.

Do apple still offer student discounts? Im no longer a student but i damn well will be taking advantage of it if they offer it. The touch price is too hideous to take on full force.

If you care more about audio fidelity and storage space, go with the the Classic, which is what I did. If you just want more wow factor, and would really use wi-fi, then the touch is probably more your speed.

Nah too many people abused it on the ipods. Shame.

You can't sync with itunes over Wifi? I was just looking at "Syncing Ipod touch" in the PDF that was posted earlier and I don't see any mention of that.

Nope.

Too bad, because that would be KILLER.
The hardware is there to turn the iPod touch into a wireless harddrive/jukebox/apple-tv-light device. Whether or not Apple will ever do it, though, is another question...

Damn! I guess I will just get a classic instead then. Too bad they screwed that up with the matte finish too.

This is a change about which I simply don't understand all the bitching. It makes it far less scratchable. The last one attracted scratches like moths to a porchlight. Matte makes me worry about it less.

Wait, bluetsunami - do you mean the radio remote from apple? The little remote control device that looks like a shuffle? If so, that's a radio tuner - it allows you to tune into radio frequencies on your iPod, as well as control your ipod in a limited fashion. I was unaware that 3rd parties made one.

If you're looking for an FM tuner that OUTPUTS radio frequency so you can listen to your iPod on an external FM receiver...that's something different - Apple don't make anything like that.

ilounge have put up a comprehensive and pretty scathing review of the touch.

These screen issues are really starting to worry me. Some people are reporting them, others say their screens are fine I just hope it’s a component or software problem from the first batch. Especially with a bunch of other reports of touches identifying themselves as iPhones in certain situations, the OS port looks like a real rush job from apple.

All this coupled with the imminent iPhone launch announcement in the UK im 50/50 about cancelling my pre-order and waiting to get an iPhone and hacking it.

they sure do.

you don't even have to be a student to use them - there's no verification needed i believe. (only if you order through the apple site though)

So do we know a release date for the Touch in the UK?
All the websites i look at seem to have a different date on them!

UK release is the 28th, not sure if any stores will start getting shipments early like the states have been seeing though.

Edit: Also, the educational discount is NOT offered on iPods - only on macs/hardware iirc.

Nice one, cheers. Id seen it was the 28th on the Apple Store website, but looking elsewhere dates were different.

Thats about an FM "Transmitter" (as in a device that'll transmit the sound from the iPod to a car radio). My recent question was about any tuners (as in, being able to listen in on Radio stations on my iPod.

Oh no, he just confused the two. I was looking into a Transmitter before but right now I'm looking into a tuner.

That review was quite brutal, and very discouraging.

Because no one has any business buying an almost iPhone. Anyone spending $399 on an iPod that doesn't do a single thing the iPhone can't is asking for a disappointment. How could you possible get excited about spending the same amount of money for a product that's inherently a subset of an incredible device? You can't.

Everyone who buys the iPod Touch will have buyer's remorse. It's built into the design, and Apple was clearly intentional in that.

I wouldn't mind buying an iPhone but there's two reasons I won't for the moment:

First it's not available in Canada, thanks to RIM and their exclusive deal with Rogers.

Second: The monthly bills(As much as 100$ a month in the US???) is a bit TOO excessive.

iPod Touch for me.

That kind of review is pretty weak, they keep comparing it to the iphone instead of as its own product, they knock it for not having a feature the iphone has instead of awarding it for having something a normal ipod doesnt have.

iPod Touch for me.

Buying an iPhone to use as a phone would be disaster, no video recording, cheap camera and paying for MP3 ringtones is not something I have to deal with my unlocked Nokia N73, that's something that's very important to me, plus I can't deal with just 8GB of storage; need at least sixteen. I think I will wait for a few more Touch reviews.

Those were my main reasons too (except im in the UK) … but a lot of things have changed in the last couple of weeks
- there are software unlocks for the iPhone… no need to be tied in to a contract
- the iPhone is the same price as the touch
- the touches screen looks as if it may suck pretty bad
- a bunch of missing apps on the touch

Theres still a couple of weeks until the official release so I am keeping my fingers crossed the problems get ironed out, if not i will probably cancel my pre-order and wait for the iPhone

My bill is $72/mo after taxes.. Not too bad for 450 anytime minutes w/ rollover, 5000 night and weekend minutes and unlimited data (e-mail and internet)

I imagine it would be worse in canada with the absurdly expensive data rates.

I just purchased an iPod Touch and I'm enjoying it so far. The previous MP3 player I was using was one of the original iPod Mini's, so for me the Touch is a big upgrade. Plus, the iPhone was out of the question since I don't have Cingular, and I didn't want the Classic, even if it has more space.

probably a stupid question and answered many times but i just finished the first year of a 2 year contract...can i buy and use an iphone on at&t without signing a new contract?

We are on the same page there. The Touch is an iPod, not a iPhone. The review should be handled as such.

The only problem I have had on my Touch is the fact that importing pictures has lead to some "interesting" results. The pics look really weird and 'chopped up'. The video has been fine, the coverflow has been fine as well, so it is not a physical issue with the screen itself. I will post the problems when I get home. Hopefully it will be something that can be fixed in the first firmware update.

No.

And there is an iPhone thread for these questions.

Whomever has an iPod touch - can you give us freaking imprssions already?

We want to know the screen quality - for 100 more I can get an iPhone - can I use it as an iPod without activating the phone?

I'll do that if so.

I'm not getting the touch until it is treated as the premium device that Apple's price requests.

They're probably making a 40-50% markup on these iPod touchs yet they compromise on the primary function- music.

I'm getting a classic instead, where they probably still have a equally rude markup considering the lack of a protective sleeve (couple of cents, if that?) but at least the device does the intended job to the best of it's ability in the eyes of the designers.

I got my confirmation for in store pickup for my touch tonight at Best Buy. Should have it later.. unless they lie.. Then I will rip some new heads and demand free items! :lol

would you feel the same way if you didn't spend $9748561 on your headphones?

Anyone know the definitive way of deleting duplicate and dead MP3 files in the iTunes library? I tried searching around already and theres a bunch of homemade scripts that don't run under Vista.

It looks as though iTunes duped my whole fricken music library.

Go to view and select the option show duplicates the "dead" MP3s should have an exclimation mark by them maybe you can sort them as well.

Just got the iPod touch.

It's the most amazing fucking MP3 player I've ever held. Holy shit. Pics in a few, I'm no photographer but it'll do.

No black scene-negative effect thing going on?

P.S. I'm in the process of going through over 6000 mp3 files to ensure I have cover art on all of them. Damn am I tired.

I tried that but since my whole collection was duped, its showing the duplicates for every item. It would be awesome if I could click down on the Exclamation point and have them grouped together (so I can easily nuke them). But I have to individually highlight each one, which will take a while ;_;

Luckily I'm using mp3tag, and am able to search online for matching albums / cover art. Still a pain but at least a bit automated.

Amen. Do the backs of the new iPods use the new material too? I take my 5G out of its cover for a while just to use indoors and the back of the thing gets scratched to blazes. I can only assume that the table top of the desk is somehow doing it. Pathetic...

thanks for the name o the program, now I have prep time so I can do it little by little everyday.

If they would have used the iPhone glass, it would have been far less scratchable as well.

I think they just changed it to the matte finish mainly because they needed some way to make it look different.

Just got my touch.. its so flippin thin..

Its also in the most sleek packaging I have ever seen.. (Sorry bear with me.. first apple product ever)

Thanks for the stickers too Apple! :lol
