where is always illegit.. until apple releases it to the public, only devs are allowed to download it.

How is the same as it's always been for GMs. Get the ips file, hold down Alt (or Option) while clicking on Restore iPhone, then select the downloaded file.
Right but the gms are never locked down like the betas are.. They're the real final official release, granted I haven't installed a gm since like ios3 soo.... But I'm putting this on my mini right now.

well clearly it's in the API.. so yeah, it's just a question on if they let us determine if the phone was unlocked with fingerprint or not. That and they need to allow stuff (which they might already) to be excluded from icloud backup.

i.e. the only way I see it working is if a bank can see you unlocked your iphone with your fingerprint, give you an option to save your password locally and use that password-less option whenever you use your fingerprint. But yeah I'm guessing they will only do that if your saved password is then not stored off out on icloud.com

I might be missing something here, but why would it need to know if you unlocked with a fingerprint or not? It would simply be a fingerprint access to auto input your credentials. So it shouldn't matter how you unlocked it since you'd be using your fingerprint at that point in time to log in.

I had slight interest on 5c if it was at a reasonable price. My jaw dropped when I see the unlocked price in my region. I heard it's getting a low 40%ish profit margin from a high 30+% profit margin from previous models, so I'm not sold at all.
did you also get disappointed when Porsche released their next years model prices?

not everything is for everyone, toyota and Nokia make great products at prices you want. apple doesn't need to compromise their premium products

It's odd that the Apple-made case obscures "iPhone" in such a way to turn it into the French word for "no".

Not to say NFC doesn't have it's uses, but I'd expect fingerprint security for phone unlocking and passwords will be far more widely used than anything NFC thus far.

Also I am going to bed before the GM hits, otherwise I just will probably not sleep at all today <_>

I think it might be in the same ground as when the Thinkpads have the biometrics (or other laptops) to login. People rarely used it. Also, I can see biometrics be good if it's a bigger phone. But considering the 5S can fit in any sized hand, it should be a problem to normally log in.

I can see Astery's point though. Rumours were pointing to the 5C being a cheap entry-level iPhone.
I guess it goes to show you can't believe everything rumoured. (You can believe most of it though based on this presser.)

If it works well, people will use it.

I thought the same thing. They talked about how the 5C and case were both designed together but it doesn’t look like it.

hole pattern should be different or the iphone lettering different to obscure the lettering. especially the “non”, lol

I hate seeing people dress up their iphones, makes them look like dogs in make-up.

And now Apple is part of the problem.

Speaking of that, I hate it when people dress up their dogs in clothing. Seriously, just get a dog with hair. It'll be less embarrassing.

Not such a horrible new phone I suppose but it didn't "wow" me like the previous jumps. When you take away ios7 (which I'll have on my 4s), there doesn't seem to be that much of an upgrade. Bigger phone (for anyone less than the 5), fingerprint tech, and faster.

I need to make the jump regardless or just waste my money on a new battery. But I'm actually now torn between the 5s and the Galaxy S4. Samsung added some pretty cool camera features. Are there any ios apps similar to it?

You must have missed the 1/3 of the presentation that was all about the camera and software features.

http://www.apple.com/iphone-5s/features/ <--scroll down to the iSight camera section. It also does basically HTC's Zoe mode of taking a bunch of photos and then stitching them together - as shown in the video.

I'm torn between an S4 and the 5S now.

I don't think I could live without the App Store (gaming on my phone is one of the most important parts of why I've liked iPhone for so long), but the featureset on the S4 both predates and outnumbers the 5S. Bigger screen is actually a negative for me.

I'd have a S4 right now if I could have the App Store on it.

That's not quite Zoe though. Zoe is a 3 second video that allows you to pull out still images from it in order to find the right shot. They're not being stitched together. That's a different feature on the HTC One though.

I am happy that the iPad 2 still is getting iOS updates, mine still keeps on trucking.

When I do replace it, there will be a very nice spec jump at the rare technology is going. I bet that the 5S is at least 20x more powerful than what is in my iPad 2 :)

eh, I don't see how it could work like that.. I mean technically it could... but there are security issues all over there... here's my thought.

Your fingerprint COULD NOT WHATSOEVER be transmitted over the net. I mean no fucking way.

So all that can really be done is, locally to your phone, say "yeah he's him.. here give him a cookie (token)."

So what do you do with that verification? You seem to be suggesting (please correct me if I'm wrong) for your bank app to then say "ok, his phone says it's him, so let him login without a password". The problem with that is I can't see any way that something like that wouldn't/couldn't eventually be hacked.

Instead what I'm suggesting is that the OS knows how you unlocked your phone (the OS already knows if you have locking turned on or not.. It's available right in the security API of iOS). If you unlocked it with your fingerprint, then your bank app let's you save your password locally (basically like your browser saving your password) and use the app password-free. If you unlocked it with a PIN (which you could have given to anyone), then it requires a password OR (as you kind of suggested) putting your finger on the sensor to still use it password-free.

I mean there are all sorts of options out there.. we'll have to see what kind of access apple gives us to it.. Will definitely check the iOS7 GM SDK docs hopefully tonight and see. But yeah, there needs to be authorized password storage and access. All they can do with the fingerprint is basically a boolean as to if it's you or not and if you logged in with it or not.

You'd think they would have had one of the holes just be an oval in the middle so that the word "iPhone" would show through. It would have looked better than butchering the word the way they have it now.

I'm refreshing engadget and ars comment sections waiting for the link to drop, where are you guys staked out? Anyone on the verge?

Of have had one hole for 'iphone' or no holes at all. Don't know what they were thinking.

search.twitter.com

Only way to go.

But I only use twitter on my iPad, I hate the web version.

Man, I've even got my old mbp out of the closet since my ipad is still linked to it, lol.

was in the announcement.

trying to sell idiots a 1 cent silicon case for $40.

I think it has leather interiors or something idk... its one of the slides on the apple page.

the 5S case is micro fibre inside and leather outside. so it’s about 5 to 10 bucks more expensive than other, midrange leather cases that get sold in the apple store. so it probably costs 1 dollar to make, not one penny :)

the 5C case is plastic and is 30. this is the one that costs a penny to make.

Same here. I love mine, its a little trooper.

And for confirmation you don't need you udid registered to run the GMs. I thought this was true before. I'm hoping this has not changed.
