Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag in Native 1080p on PlayStation 4

Marking yet another milestone for the killer franchise, Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag on the PlayStation 4 is the first Assassin’s Creed game to be rendered in true native 1080p. In other words, the already gorgeous game will be, well… even more gorgeous when it sets sail on the PS4.

One small caveat: players will need to download a title update (available shortly after release) to enjoy the full 1080p native resolution.

Even without the title update, the game is undeniably stunning on next-gen consoles. Indeed, as Associate Producer Sylvain Trottier suggests, some players might not even be able to tell the difference. That’s because the game, as shipped, is being rendered on next-gen at a resolution that’s very close to 1080p (900p, if you’re curious), and the upscaling process barely adjusts the image.

“If it’s running at 720p vs 1080p, you’re going to notice the difference, by far,” Trottier explains. “But if it’s set at a resolution that’s very close, where most of the pixels are already there in internal processing, most people won’t see any difference.” Those who can spot the differences might note that the game would be, in some very subtle ways, slightly less crisp but a tiny bit smoother.

But why ship at 900p in the first place? To meet an essential goal: deliver a visually brilliant game at a steady 30 frames per second (the industry gold standard for open-world games). Finishing the game at 900p gave the development team the extra room in terms of the GPU and CPU usage to ensure the framerate never dips below 30 frames per second. The team then used the time between the ship date and the release to focus on a title update that could deliver native 1080p resolution on the PS4.

But they didn’t stop there.

“The most important part of this title update is not necessarily 1080p native resolution,” Trottier smiles. “It’s the fact that even when we were done with the project, even when we were finished with the certification and everything else, even when most of the engineers had started to work on other projects – like we always do at Ubisoft – some of my engineers continued to work on Black Flag and they even developed a brand-new anti-aliasing technique.” (Anti-aliasing is a technique used to diminish the occasional appearance of jagged edges in computer-generated graphics.)

Indeed, along with the full 1080p native resolution, the visuals have been improved even further, simply because the engineers knew that with the additional time they could do even more. So they did. And now, not only will you see every single miniscule pixel in glorious 1080p native resolution on the PS4 – exactly as the artists rendered it – but you’ll also see an even cleaner, clearer and more brilliant moving image than anyone even imagined. (Pay special attention to finer details like the ropes on the ships if you want to get an eyeful of what we’re talking about.) And the best news for gamers on the latest next-gen systems? This anti-aliasing technique will be available for both PS4 and Xbox One.

Wow that is pretty shitty. I'm sure glad I got my copy for free on Amazon. Although now I'm wishing I had gotten NBA2K14 instead.

This patching to increase resolution is getting ridiculous.

Patching is for fixing bugs, not as an option to finish your game after it has been released for $60.

What is going on with all these cross gen games? KZ looks much more impressive and runs better, so why are they having trouble hitting 1080p with this?

You know, I never thought I'd see the day that resolution was patched into a game. It's like something dreams
nightmares?
are made of. Between this and whatever the fuck is going on with Resolutiongate, it's really rather interesting.

What about the Xbone version?
By the way I like how he mentions that a 720p to 1080p difference would be noticeable by far.

I'm hoping this is just a launch title rushing to meet the release thing. Patches to upgrade to 1080p? Cmon.

This baffles me.

Technically I do not see any reason as to why you would need a future patch to do a simple resolution increase. It could of been 1080p from the jump. I dunno ...

Truly confused.

Funny thing is setting the resolution of a game within the code is literally one of code.

I wonder why they set it so slow to begin with? Outside pressure?

If this shit is still common place in 6 months it's a problem.

At a console launch if the game doesn't crash often you're doing well.

What the hell is up with these half finished games. Damn it this is a crazy ass launch.
Half finished? The game's done, they just optimised the code after the game was pressed. I wish every developer continued to optimise after launch.

Thats the way of things now. Rome Total War II AI was completely broken. I would say the ability for devs to patch games post release is the issue. Back when games couldnt be patched (n64/ps2 age and beyond i suppose) Devs actually put out quality titles on release, they didnt have a choice. Now there is too much of a push to meet schedule and release date and fix it later

The next- and current gen versions of this game look very similar to each other. The PS4 version had better textures if i recall correctly. The game isn't visually impressive, whether it's on the PS3 or the PS4.

Just imagine a world where the 360 and PS3 started out of the gate releasing its biggest games at 640p instead of 720p...Now imagine that world 3 years later...

.....Scary

What the fuck is this shit!?

I'm actually half glad that the US get to be beta testers. I was actually looking at getting ACIV, may hold off until it's patched now and wait for performance reviews.

Rushed cross gen ports. It will be better next year. I actually wonder how much time some of these developers spent optimizing the code for next gen systems.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
There is something honestly incredibly shady about this resolution increase patch guff. Its not like the PS4 internals suddenly changed gigantically in the last half a year. Were third parties really going to try and promote "totally similar" Xbone and PS4 versions but are now taking heed of the wind change?

Just even the idea of just being able to patch a resolution bump as obviously possible and going to happen rings a ton of alarm bells.

KZ is on 1 system. AC4 is on most things post gamecube.

I still find it hilarious that for a game where 'next gen development was super smooth!' is having these issues... its also odd that the pc version actually has quite modest specs (recommended gpu is just a gtx 470!).
