• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Assassins's Creed PS4 is now 1080p with AA.

This is my theory: Ubisoft created both versions with parity in mind, then after doing some tests and profiling, they found they're able to push PS4 version to 1080p unfortunately they didn't have time to do it before printing physical disks so it's coming in a patch.

well, you cant increase your pixel count by 50% that quickly... to me this seems like they had literally bugs in game code where the game occasionally dropped but usually run fine and they needed extra few weeks to fix these bugs.

otherwise you dont improve your output by 50% accidentally or so soon... generally it would require rewriting a lot of the code.

Never saw a resolution patch before COD and now AC IV. it's different just for that reason.

I'm just saying it's unusual. Could be they just wanted to get the code out the door so they ran with what was doable on both ps4 and xbone with the intent of pushing the ps4 later and patching it.

Gives me hope that other games will follow (need for speed 60fps please).

ghostbusters ps3 was patched to increase resolution

Bummer - in the way that this was going to be the first game I popped in tonight after work to play. My first next-gen game!! Since it's getting a little prettified and the patch isn't out yet, I guess I'll just wait for the patch to play it and pick something else for first tonight. Killzone, maybe?

After the launch chaos this needs to stop. It shouldn't be here to begin with, but if this stays then that would be unacceptable. What's next, visuals upgrade dlc?

One small caveat: players will need to download a title update

Yeah okay fair enough... No harm done even if little weird

...(available shortly after release) to enjoy the full 1080p native resolution.

WHAT? Ubisoft please.

This is crazy. I was really looking forward to playing this today but why in the world would anyone that just bought a new ps4 play it without the patch. It might as well not even work.

Quiet quit giving them ideas
i guarantee at least capcom will try to do this this gen

Don't tinfoil hate it. That's a pretty silly way to look at it...more likely they were rushed for time and decided to push it out of the door as is and patch it later...

Yeah, as "late" as one day after the reviews. This patch was really fast. It's strange they forgot to tell the reviewers...

Battlefield 3 on xb360 had a huge texture and graphics upgrade download. Game looked way better when you got it.

That would've been clear from the get go in development.

I think it's pretty simple. Dice didn't care about stepping on toes, others did to varying degrees and thus the post launch patches.

Because they play a game for more then what the resolution is at lol.

Just pretend you bought an XBone until the patch. :-P

I played a bit of AC4 today on the PS4, and I could instantly tell it was higher than 720p, but I couldn't tell it wasn't 1080p, it looked really crisp and sharp to me.
This is about 6 feet from a 55"

Guess that just means it gets even better looking soon, with this patch coming.

Guess I was wrong, It looked close enough to 1080p when I played it last month. The lack of AA was definitely noticeable though.

Pretty much same experience as the poster above I guess.

Killzone, maybe?

Hope that doesn't crash on you. I read today that Guerilla is working on a patch to fix the crashing. I saw Gerstmann said the game even crashed on him during the ending credits after he finished it.

Welcome to next-gen.

EDIT: Well, I was close...

First there was the "I don't even think you can do that", when infinity ward were asked if patching XB1 to 1080p was possible, then they patched PS4 SP to 1080p...now this...

Next gen patching Is already madness.

What I hate most about these companies messing around: they're acting like being transparent is so last-gen. It's fine to have issues but trying to cover up everything looks really bad.

And this is a game I considered in the past to get with my potential PS4 purchase.

Next-gen versions have all sorts of crazy taxing effects like AO, Motion Blur, improved shadows, improved textures, etc. It's not a 1:1 port with a higher resolution...

Even though this is cross-gen, it's not like it's Tony Hawk's American Wasteland/GUN all over again.
I'm not saying that it's a 1:1 port, I'm just watching PS4/360 versions running side by side, and I don't see what would explain that both Xbox One and 360 version run at 720p.

I see more differences between BF4 on 360 and Xbox One, and the Xbox One version is also running at 60 fps, I can understand that they both run at 720 fps, but not Assassins Creed taking into consideration the hardware differences.

Also, when there was that list going around that every game except BF4 was 1080 on PS4, that was a lie? CoD now this? With all the Xbox resolution transparency, it's tough to believe this wasn't known until after launch.

but thats my point. there's no such thing as a "resolution patch"
patches can change ANYTHING. this one happens to change some code in the game that let's it run more efficiently, so they bumped the resolution up

and of COURSE they just "wanted to get the code out the door" because they had no fucking choice. they finished what they could in order to launch on launch day and thats that.

this thread is making my head hurt

Now we've all got consoles that are basically PCs, we can look forward to endless amounts of half-finished software that requires patching to iron out bugs and so on.

Just be glad there's finally an Assassin's Creed game on a console with a stable framerate. The series has always ran like shit on PS360.
But will this still be the case after this patch? It might seem crazy but I'm actually a little worried. If the game was running smoothly at 900p then isn't there a chance that bumping the res up will affect performance?

I would much rather have a smooth framerate at 900p than 1080p with dips. Coming from playing the AC games on PS3 having a steady 30fps would be awesome to me. That alone and playing at 900p instead of 720p would already be an improvement to me.

It's getting fixed really soon, and with solid AA.
It's hard to make launch deadlines.
GAF is overreacting.
I'm just gonna go enjoy my copy of ACIV once it's done downloading.

Are you trying to justify it? Or just a observation?

Observation, but I didn't have a big problem with it in this situation. This was a pc game that is multiplatform, and the console it released on was 6 years old. They found a way to optimize it after the fact, so no problem imo.

Man, MS can't catch a break. How are ya'll blaming them for this?!?! "Paritygate"? Really?

MS mandates that games show parity on their console to match or exceed the rivals, or has everyone made that up? Basically, I see this as MS's inferior console hardware lowering the bar for what the PS4 can churn out. If this trend continues, you're going to start seeing the difference in quality from Sony's 1st party house games.

Not saying any of this is true or not, just what is being perceived currently and the stick of truth is pointing towards supporting it.

The patch isn't confirmed to be coming today. Shortly could mean a month, it's PR. They're trying to deliver the news as softly as possible.

Is there any articles on this? Or this just a random far fetched theory someone came up with?

I really want to see this game run with the update now. I probably won't play again until it drops. I thought it looked great on the PS4 though, for how it shipped.

I guess if folks repeat a lie enough times it becomes truth...sad!

MS's mandate says pubs have to SHIP games with resolution parity, but doesn't say anything about post-release patches.

Don't really know anything, just being a smartass.

Would actually be a genius move from MS if true.

Bone gets parity for reviews and head-to-head comparisons... then days or weeks later, when nobody gives a shit anymore, PS4 quietly gets a 1080p patch.

To me that would depend on how much they're charging and how long the game has been released. If the game is just released it's unacceptable to me. If it's a fan service after years for a reasonable amount then that would be the exception. But that would be the only situation i would be ok with; as a service.
