Best and worst videogame character redesigns

Best dad!
Sends his son off to die.

I don't think there were very many options on the table.
As Cid tells you early on he was dealt a losing hand and played it the best he could. He obviously had the foresight to know exactly how everything was going to unfold.

Only on Chapter 5 though so maybe my opinion changes! Who knows.

Did no one post Chris Redfield from remake to re5 yet?
Awful.

I can understand not liking how they bulked him up in 5 proper, but I have a hard time placing it under Remake specifically because it also gave him a more distinguishable face, which prior depictions notably lacked. What's your opinion on the Lost in Nighmares BSAA design?

Kingsglaive Luna actually looks naturally human. I love her pale skin and dark circles. They certainly make her peircing blue eyes pop. Her outfit is way more impressive as well. She reminds me of a young French woman.
I admired how all of the Kingsglaive characters had unique facial features and bone structure. By comparison, their game counterparts look far less emotive and more like flawless mannequins. Which is no longer interesting to me, as far as character designing goes.

The facial features are much better handled than the game's, though costume-wise I prefer the simpler white dress from the game over the one used for the majority of Kingsglaive.

Her casual outfit is easily her best costume in either, though.

You're joking, right?

This is a joke post, right?

Apparently sex appeal = strings of fabric and comical beach ball tits.

Shockingly, people are capable of having different opinions to you. Do you think they would have gone with that design at all if nobody found it appealing?

Klonoa

For its Wii remake Klonoa has been in danger to receive a terrible edgy redesign (on the right).
Klonoa_character_redesigns.jpg

Fortunately it has never been used and they remained true to the classics. (The redesign on the left was used.)

Going to get my flameshield ready:

This guy has more personality than all the other Links combined.
Not that I think that it should be his default design or aything. I like how the game changes art style every time.

Different Characters.

If anything, I like her Kingsglaive design the best:

She actually looks her age in Kingsglaive, as in, she looks more like a woman.
Her 3D model in the game looks like she is 14
I can show you a picture of a 30 something Japanese singer that will blow your world view wide open

Some good ones here so far. Forgot how much I hated the Ashley redesign in ME3.

I'm surprised this one hasn't been mentioned.

The updated Nathan "Rad" Spencer design for Bionic Commando Rearmed was awesome.

I can't stand any variation of AC Tifa. It's such a boring design. You can gripe about how revealing the original FF7 design is for Tifa, but it has spunk and personality. The all black apron is just lame as hell with no spark to it at all. AC Cloud is a little better, but still shitty. I'm really not a fan of any of the AC redesigns.

Team Magma and Aqua in ORAS are pretty awful too.

Maxie went from a threat to a nerd. All of the grunts were made too over the top and silly. I don't like how pointlessly complex the Team Aqua admin outfits were made to be either. The Team Magma grunts look like jokes too.

Also can't stand the changes to Samus's varia suit (and Zero suit) from Prime to Other M (and Smash 4 to a lesser extent). The ridges on the shoulders are a huge part of the design, and the overall streamlining is just obnoxious. Samus is a tank not a ninja, that's what the Zero suit is for. And then the damn heels added to the zero suit in Other M are just trash.

And then of course Sakurai adapted the Other M designs out of some bizarre sense of game developer loyalty instead of the ones from the actually good games. Instead of just reverting the Zero suit design he "fixed" it with the stupid power heels. And then Link, Zelda, and Ganon all stuck with the TP designs despite newer games having design seniority. Always so consistent Sakurai.
Samus armor was always made to be super fast as well as bulky, in that instance the smash 4 armor makes the most sense

I was never really a fan of NetherRealm's character designs in Injustice. Although the sequel is not out yet--and a lot can happen with the design, but I wouldn't hold my breath--the whole loot/gear nonsense will make the designs go from bad:
...to worse:

How do we go from magical underwater wizard to some blond, bearded Cro-Magnon gladiator (with a toupee) that Kratos was supposed to fight but got scrapped for Poseidon?

Class Lara is best, new Lara is garbage. I've said my piece on this before, but Lara from Tomb Raider 2013 and ROTR is an absolute garbage character and a complete desecration of one of my favorite characters in gaming growing up.

I'm surprised it took this long, but Castlevania Judgment is a graveyard of absolutely shitty redesigns outside of Cornell.

For example, let's take Simon Belmont. If you like him as Conan the Barbarian, here you go.

Or maybe you're more of a fan of his more modern post-Symphony of the Night design:

Or maybe you just want someone to just fuck his shit up and look less like a badass vampire hunter, and more like Light fucking Yagami attending a hard leather BDSM bar.

I don't know if this has been posted yet (I'd be genuinely surprised if it wasn't), but the Conker redesign for the Young Conker Hololens game revealed earlier this year was terribad:

maxresdefault.jpg

Seriously, what a monstrosity of a redesign. I feel really bad for the developers who worked on this though. That like/dislike ratio for the trailer is insane lol.

I guess this one divides people, but I just think it's leagues better than any previous version. Nothing else to really say about it.

The new Lara design isn't bad at all. The main issue with it is that there's no longer anything unique about her design. They wanted a grounded character so obviously someone who runs around in shorts dual wielding pistols doesn't make sense. But the cost of that is some level they lose the individuality of that character. If you show someone a piece of art of Lara now, they'll probably think it's some fanart of Katniss. The old Lara would still stand out. I think that's why whenever there is a special costume of Lara in another game, or when they simply make another game starring Lara, they always use the classic design.

No way, the worst is this piece of trash. *shudders*
I fail to see how Blood Omen 2 kain is a bad character design. Blood omen 2 failed in many aspects but it's human vampire characters definetely were on point/consistent with the pre-corrupted vampire liutenants in SR.

Janos Audron redesign was a much worse inconsistent redisign in Blood Omen 2. However Defiance made him the GOAT Legacy of Kain design!

I can show you a picture of a 30 something Japanese singer that will blow your world view wide open

Game Luna certainly doesn't emote or animate as lively or naturally as that Japanese singer could, that's for sure. It has less to do with literal age, and more with how a character moves and behaves within a game world.
People forget how important proper animation is to the overall character design. Especially one as detailed as FF XV's characters tend to be.

Or maybe you're more of a fan of his more modern post-Symphony of the Night design:

simon-belmont.jpg
I understand the hate red hair Simon gets, but I love this redesign so much. Keeps the barbarian look while also making him look like Kojima's designs for the later Belmonts. Judgement design is absolutely terrible, however.

I usually love the faces in Yakuza games, but I hate Ryuji Goda's inexplicable transition from cocky young rival in Yakuza 2 to grumpy old man in Dead Souls:

These two games are only five years apart. He's 26 on the left and 31 on the right. What happened?

As someone who has absolutely no attachment to earlier version King Regis I find the new one vastly superior. Games need older characters like that and he looks really good for the role he plays.

For Worst Redesign... one that really gets me is Boo from early Paper Mario to new:

30845.png

This one has an upper lip and is pretty different from every other Boo in Mario games (and even Bow, your Boo partner, doesn't share this upper lip) but, I dunno, there's something really iconic about it

Now let's move to Color Splash (this change actually was made on Sticker Star, but CS is where they nailed the art style). I'd say 99% of the enemies and character on that game look really good and they went with a really nice artwork style... except for Boo:

84131.png

Maybe it's just me. He looks more like his original artwork... but he also look super stiff, the other felt more alive (heh) and more striking. Edit: Actually looking back at it... it looks really fine too. I guess I was just a lot more used to the old style for what is my favorite Mario character

I'm surprised it took this long, but Castlevania Judgment is a graveyard of absolutely shitty redesigns outside of Cornell.

I'd take Kojima's art over Obata's any day. But man... I can't say that there isn't something really nostalgic about his style. Maybe I just read a lot of Death Note back in the day, but there's a weird quality to it that I really like.

You're joking, right?

His avatar will easily explain everything ;)

Damn, wonder how the internet would have felt in 2006 if this was the Vaan you played as.
Pretty funny how people go apeshit at some shirtless dude but don't bat an eyelash at the ridiculous female outfits you see all the time.

Class Lara is best, new Lara is garbage. I've said my piece on this before, but Lara from Tomb Raider 2013 and ROTR is an absolute garbage character and a complete desecration of one of my favorite characters in gaming growing up.

He looks stupid and generic, instead of badass and unique, like a goth emo douchebag out of an Anne Rice novel.

HRUH?

EXCUSE ME?

Alright, so first of all... The original designs looked like this

And the new designs look like this...

The old designs aren't even 1/1000000th of as good!

Yeah as much as I enjoy and love old Sugimori designs and art, Team Magma/Aqua was always his blandest design. It's literally Team Rocket but themed. The redesigns are really good and they really try to differentiate the teams making Aqua a really rowdy bunch and Magma be all neat and organized. It always felt like to me that he was a slump when doing Ruby/Sapphire character art and that he only got over it by Emerald (which has some really amazing illustrations)

that, and her voice. i really liked patricia ja lee, her VA in RE5. shame they couldn't get her back.

jill in revelations just feels like a completely different person, tbh

She was voicing Jill in the early trailers of RE revelations but after that its the new VA. No idea why she was replaced if Patrica Ja Lee was gonna come back.

Ashley from Mass Effect

I didn't care about how they changed her outfit, but I like what they did to her face. It's been years, so I don't know if the game(s) designate her as Hispanic, but I always thought of her in that way. ME3 brings out her inner Sarah Ramirez, IMO.
