You know, but the time the LOTR trilogy has its 15 anniversary, they're going to need to redo all the CGI. It was never AMAZING, but it was competent, but its looking worse all the time right now.

They shouldn't. Just like Lucas should've left the damn Star Wars Trilogy alone.

How do you upgrade a CG-heavy film with a definitive version, and say THAT (more than one you might do in 10 years time) is the one everyone should own forever?

Ask George Lucas! :lol

But seriously though, Im not talking about Lucas-esque hackjobs in which he tampers with everything. No, I propose not editing the films in any way aside from cleaning up, and where needed (ENTS), replacing CG.

I watch it every November haven't seen any issues yet.

Yoda? Not IMO. The CG version was inferior to the puppet version in every way. They couldn't even match the color for cryin' out loud.

I thought they used the same puppet? At least that's what I read. And I desperately didn't want to believe it, because I thought the "new" puppet looked horrible.

Only thing in LOTR that doesn't look so hot (and never really did) is the Wargs. Though from what I remember of the commentary they said they were a late addition rush job so that might have something to do with it.

On a whole LotR has aged and will age really well since they used so much miniatures, "bigatures", real locations and other non-computer stuff.

Was watching the extended editions last week with my GF who had never seen the movies before and you could see parts where the effects were looking very ropey. Gollum still looks awesome though.

Davey Jones is still probably the most impressive single CGI character. The guys on his boat didn't look anywhere near as good, but I think they looked decent enough that they didn't impact our appraisal of how Davey Jones looks. He essentially looked the same whether he was with his CGI crew or with the humans, which was probably the most impressive thing.

The only things that never looked amazing in LOTR was some of the blue / green screen stuff. But I agree that it'll age well since it used so much 'real' stuff as opposed to CGI. (A side benefit of that is that performances are better. Read Star Wars actors comments on how difficult it was to perform while completely surrounded by green and then the final product for evidence.)

I don't think Peter Jackson plans on inserting terrible actors back into the movies, though.

Wow, that Benjamin Button making of vid was pretty mind blowing. Always wondered how they handled that.

And the bit about CG Arnold from the new Terminator surprised me. I didn't realize it was CG but I also remember wondering how he could possibly still be that in shape, so it makes sense. Also that might be the worst use of a cameo ever, where's the thread for that?

By far, Davy Jones.

However, there are scenes in Watchmen where Manhattan looks completely real, as in it looks like a dude in blue makeup.

His entire body is cgi?????

Mind... blown...

I was about to say the Wild Things, in "Where the Wild Things Are" (or their faces, I'm still not sure how they made those)

Edit: Manhattan from Watchamen is CGI the whole movie? WTF? As a side note, Avitar's natives look a little uncanny there, so much that it's jarring to see the marines in a live action scene and a Navi one following after, IMO.

Benjamin Button>Davy Jones>Dr. Manhattan>Gollum

I honestly did not know I was watching CG when I saw Benjamin Button. When I found out later, I was floored.

My vote goes to Proximo from Gladiator. He died in mid production and they replaced him with this crappy cg version. Cant find pics though T_T

The actor of Proximo died and he was cgi'd... really? If true I hadn't even noticed.

LOOK AT THIS and tell me it isn't the best CGI character ever in a movie. It looks like a puppet!
It's even more impressive in motion than in stills IMO.

Davy Jones gets my vote. That is an extremely impressive CGI integration done by the vfx studios.

I always thought Rude from Advent Children was pretty impressive.

The only problem is, it looks like his facial hair isn't attached to him... Or real... :lol

Best, or the most realistic?

Again Benjamin Button is the most realistic cg human head to date, but he certainly isn't classed as an entire cg character.. nor do I see how he is the "best".

Davy Jones would probably be up there. King Kong, Gollum for being the first to use sub surface scattering and providing an outstanding performance.

Title is very very vague.

Also, you could even go as far and name 2D characters, since CGI doesn't necessarily imply 3D.
