District 9 bitches.

And honorable mention goes to Sid.

The hell? He was just as bad as the Scorpion King. At least he's voiced by Sean Connery.

The only reason people care about Dragon Heart.

I mean, come on, you could make love to that voice.

You could have at least posted Tifa.

Only thing in LOTR that doesn't look so hot (and never really did) is the Wargs. Though from what I remember of the commentary they said they were a late addition rush job so that might have something to do with it.

IMO, the only thing that looks bad in LOTR in the Ents, and that may have to do with not liking their vision of the Ents, not necessarily the execution.

LOOK AT THIS and tell me it isn't the best CGI character ever in a movie. It looks like a puppet!

Is that supposed to be a compliment? I would think the special effects team would take that as an insult.

You mean that's all CG!? Holy shit i thought it was Bill Nighy with a lot of makeup/animatronics on him.

I thought that too when I first saw the movie in theatres. Then I went home and watched a making of and found out it was entirely CG. I was blown away. I mean everything is cg. The face, the eyes, the body. Everything.

But my vote doesn't go to Davy Jones. It goes to those fuckin Prawns. Holy shit they look real.

Though I'm going to throw a curve ball in here and say that Jake/Neytiri from AVATAR is the best. Seriously, in the 15 minute preview, there's a scene where they are behind a waterfall and you know how water sprays mist into the air? Well the water looked real, the mist looked real, and when the droplets hit their hair, it looks real. They even animate so lifelike it's mind boggling.

Gollum's animation (I know it was motion capture) and the range of facial emotions he portrays > Davey Jones.
Davey was also based off of motion capture, with extra animations added on of course for the extra stuff like the tentacles. I'd argue that Davey could easily have had the same range of facial emotions if not for the decision to go with all the extra stuff they had covering his face.

Having seen the extended trailer for Avatar last week ... it wins easily.

The face closeups literally brought tears to me eyes. It was the same feeling I had seeing the first Jurassic Park in a theater. You knew things were forever changed in movie making.

I'm saying that Gollum is a much better character, with more personality. This is what the OP is about, after all.

Not necessarily, as many of us interpret "character" in this context to mean "character model," especially if we're in the industry.

Oh well. I'm not in the industry, just a neutral observer, and Gollum has always impressed me way more.

Agreed & Gollum looks better imo. Gollum looked perfect to me and also was a more sympathetic/tragic figure than anyone else.

Davey Jones looked like a walking CGI ad. I'm not saying he looked bad, in fact he was perfect, he just looked obvious- like someone was trying to show off their prowess (Let's add one more tentacle!). I'm biased though since I didn't care for the films.

This is a good article about how it was done. Appears motion capture was involved but on location which is pretty revolutionary too:

Weren't these mainly giant mechanical puppets with CGI overlay?

Not that scene. The T-Rex was only animatronic in certain body portions like the head iirc.

wat

In all seriousness though, both were major advances with mocap. The tech for Gollum helped pioneer it, and the tech behind Davey Jones took it to the next level. And that tech is a couple years old now, you should see what we have currently. :P

He's not my favourite, but I'm not a big fan of the Pirates movies at all and I definitely agree that Davey Jones is a seriously impressive character. He's probably the thing I like most about them; very well acted and animated.

Davy Jones is just perfect.

I would have gone for benny Button but when you look at the original Brat Pitt acting, they just killed something. He looks so dead in the movie in comparison.

This imo is still the best. I don't think you can actually even tell it's CG. Just looks like make up and animatronics. Transformers is also incredible, and artistically speaking, Ratatouille still takes the biscuit for me.

100 % CGI

The CGI was cool, but it didn't look even close to real. I hated that part of the movie because it felt no better than a videogame cutscene.

I vote for District 9. Close second is Jurassic Park.

I never really thought about CGI while watching District 9, which is ridiculous.

No, I meant like, it looks real not computer generated. Because if you think about it, it's very easy to replicate the type of skin that an octopus type person would have and just have him wearing a mask but to do it all in CG is impressive. DAMN impressive

I thought this was amazing too but seeing biological characters look real just seems much more impressive than robots where you don't really have to worry about complex muscle animations and uncanny valley

Now I haven't seen either movie(D9, Avatar) but I'll say based on these pictures in the thread: The aliens in District 9 seems to be the most real looking, Davy Jones would be right under them. For aesthetics I've really grown fond of the Navi in Avatar though.

I have to throw my vote for Pirates of the Caribbean thing - does a good job of tricking the mind. The models in District 9 and Dances With Smurfs (from what I've seen of the trailer) look great - but I think they look really fake when animated. To me, they don't quite gap the Valley. FF7AC, while a crap story, I thought was pretty good for a 'realistic' all-CGI film - the models and animations were realistic enough to feel natural, but cartoonish enough that your brain accepts it. Of all the animations I've seen, I think it does the best at stepping to the edge of the Uncanny Valley, but saying, "fuck it", and turns around accepting that it's not real.

I reread it and I guess I should have fleshed it out more.

I felt Davey Jones looked perfect as did Gollum. However, because Gollum was better executed and the story overall was better (Remember, I'm not a big fan of POTC), Gollum looked better. He was more perfect:lol .

Davey Jones was simply a perfect special effect.
